Yes, you must try the original Sacher torte, but I don't think you will actually enjoy it as much as you think. It is better to get one to share if you are a first timer. Unlike its sumptous looks, it tends to be dry and grainy. Other Sacher tortes that are look alikes tend to be more moist (a well hated but descriptive word). This was my first time in this new space upstairs, and apparently it is only a couple years old. It does have nice paintings of the Sacher family. But if you are looking for the Viennese traditional cafe, you will have to wait in a line. Overall, you must try it, but I do always think that it is overpriced for what it is.

Great service and wonderful pastries! There weren't many people when I went and service was very prompt. The servers were friendly and I found the atmosphere of the cafe to be lovely-- highly recommend if you're visiting Vienna!

Nice bag no so great cake

I love pastries. I eat them all over the world. Was looking forward to trying sacher torte in Vienna. Imagine my surprise to not taste any fruit and to get a grainy cake that was slightly dry. I was super disappointed. I bought two slices- not inexpensive- and so now I know I'm not missing anything. Chocolate on top was the only good part. There are wonderful pastries to be had in Vienna, just not here.

This is the location of the famous Sacher hotel and Sacher tort. The sister restaurant which is reviewed in most guides had a 30+ min wait in the cold rain while this location on the other side of the hotel had immediate seating and super friendly service. The restaurant was lovely - even if a bit warm as their furnace was on the fritz. We only ordered drinks and dessert - one couple getting the famous tort which is their namesake. All in all it's fun, but not the best dessert I've ever had in my life. The other desserts we ordered were more dry than moist and could have used a drizzle of chocolate fudge sauce to add some flavor. I mean - when in Vienna, you kinda have to go but set your expectations at mid level and you won't be disappointed. On your way out you can purchase a full tort for shipping or carting home. I didn't have the need as the Lindt store was across the street and in my mind a better overall treat.

We waited in line for about 15 minutes and it seemed like the lines just got longer and longer after we were seated. We tried four different sacher tortes at various cafes around Austria and I thought this one was the best. Moist with just enough jam and an smooth chocolate outside layer. We also tried the apple strudel, sacher sausages, and the asparagus and ham quiche. The apple strudel and the sacher sausages were okay but the quiche was a bit odd. I suppose it resembled a deconstructed quiche with a small thin crust and light dusting of egg, ham and asparagus sprinkled on top. Four stars for the sacher torte and three stars for the rest of the food.

With those thoughts in mind then I can only be thinking of the good old Cafe Rüdigerhof. This is one of the best chill spots in Vienna .... well actually maybe in all of Central Europe. When you think of Vienna ... and being in a cool-looking place with atmosphere .... and talking with friends ... and enjoying some tasty food and a good beer or wine ...just totally chilling - the Rüdigerhof is made to order. The Rüdigerhof has both an inviting interior and a super Schanigarten for warmer days & nights. The building it is located in is a Jugendstil landmark by the architect Oskar Marmorek. And then there's the food - a selection of tasty dishes from the classic Viennese Cookbook at very reasonable prices. I especially love to go there in the winter and get a warming Gulasch soup. There are rooms for smokers and non-smokers. The smoking room is the best because everyone stays late in this room and it has more of a buzz. It just feels more like a Viennese café. The non-smoking room is not bad - it's just smaller and not as cool. Anyway, I'm lucky that Café Rüdigerhof is so close to where I live. Everyone should have such a place in their neighborhood!

One thing my wife and daughter wanted to do in Vienna was to try the local cake, the Sachertorte…read more There are a few apparently famous venues for this (and a slew of other places too). Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.
