Stopped by for a pepperoni slice and really liked it! They told me I could have any type of slice I wanted and they'd make it for me. My slice was big, with plenty of pepperoni, and it plus a bottled water came to just around $7. I'd definitely be back next time I'm in town. read more

I've been to Saco's Pizza several times, and I agree with everyone who says the pizza is good. Unfortunately, good pizza doesn't excuse terrible customer service. Today I stopped in for a slice and asked if I could use the restroom. No problem. When I came back, my pizza was ready, and I asked if they could put some barbecue sauce on top. The employee told me it would be an extra $1. I jokingly said, "One dollar just to put it on top?" I wasn't arguing about the price. I was surprised because I wasn't asking for a container to take home, just a drizzle on a slice. Instead of responding politely, the employee immediately became rude and said, "Everything you have to pay." I laughed and said, "Wow, I'm not even taking it home." His response was, "If you don't like it, don't take the barbecue." Then another employee jumped into the conversation and said, "I already let you use the bathroom," as if allowing a paying customer to use the restroom was some special privilege. As I was leaving, another employee told me, "Then don't come back." And that's exactly what I won't do. The extra dollar was never the issue. The issue was the attitude. I work in hospitality myself, and I know customer service costs nothing. A simple, friendly explanation would have been enough. New Yorkers are known for being direct, but there's a difference between being direct and being rude. The pizza is good, but there are plenty of places with good pizza and people who know how to treat customers with basic respect. I was so disappointed by the interaction that I lost my appetite and threw the pizza away. If you're visiting because you've heard about the pizza, just know that the food may be great, but the service was one of the worst experiences I've had in a long time. There are also plenty of pizza places nearby where a slice costs around $1 and the people are polite. Here, the pizza was $5, it still came out cold, and when I mentioned it, I was told to "heat it up at home." I'm not your personal chef, and that's not what I expect when I'm paying for food that's supposed to be served ready to eat. read more

Sacco's is the type of pizza joint I grew up with. Not particularly big, with a window where you can order a slice from outside and a menu that listed a ton of items that you could mix and match into a slice or pie of your choice. The staff is not particularly friendly, nor are they rude. They're there to do a job and they do it well and efficiently. I ordered a slice with mushrooms on a plate to eat while I walked, and I will say this is a solid B+ slice. The crust was a nice thickness that was able to handle a fold without any of the cheese and mushrooms falling off. The crust edge was a good size to hold the slice and tasted great on its own. I liked the sauce, which leaned towards savory vs sweet and the cheese had a nice flavor and chew. One of the hallmarks of a good slice (in my book) is the ability to eat it while walking and this one held up perfectly. I'd definitely stop by Sacco's again if I'm nearby. Dough was cooked to a fantastic light crunch without being burned -- I actually enjoyed eating the crust. I learned about Sacco Pizza from the review and repeated check-ins of a local Manhattanite. Thus, I bookmarked it. I then checked the listing and web to verify that they (still) sell slices of pizza in addition to entire pizzas. They do. I saw that the area was labeled Hell's Kitchen which, to an outsider, sounds like it might be crappy. Are you kidding? It's now almost fashionable, with so many trendy eateries along 9th Avenue. Its proximity to Columbus Circle, which I know is nice, told me to check it out. I'm glad I did. In fact, I ate "dinner" at Sacco twice. On both occasions, I got two slices of pizza. One was cheese and the other was pepperoni and mushroom. Sure, it might bend a little when you haven't bitten into it and you're holding a slice from the edge. However, as you start to chomp away, the pizza slice will hold its ingredients with ease. And I was having Neapolitan thin crust pizza! You know that these folks, who have the art of the crust so dialed, should definitely be making and selling pizza! The pizza is very good (eat it soon so it remains warm) and they sell slices, the prices are fair, the management and the employees are genuinely nice people, there is some limited space in which to eat inside (toward the back), and, for that fifth star, it's a refreshing oasis of time tested normalcy and lack of pretense along a thoroughfare and neighborhood that have a lot of trendy things going on. (I just realized that that was one sentence.) Note that locals are coming in all the time, and seem to exceed the tourists and first time visitors. Another way for me to look at this is through a Yelp quirk of mine that makes things easier to remember, such as one star for each of the letters in the name S-A-C-C-O.
