We have had our pitbull Roxy for 2 years this easter. We were new dog owners and honestly just tried our best training her with reading online articles and watching Cesar Milan. We listened to the advice given to us by her vet, such as don't let her go to public places for 12 weeks. We knew she was a very excitable dog, but we didn't really understand her behavior, a lot of her problems we justified because she was "still a puppy" and that we were in a small 1 bedroom apartment. We got a house, took her on walks, and just thought her anxiety issues would go away. Then we thought, maybe she needed a friend to keep her company while we were at work/school and help alleviate her separation anxiety.
Remy came into the mix and only amplified Roxy's fears. The crazy thing is, we thought we were doing everything right. Remy would run around the backyard while Roxy chased her, they got so much exercise! We thought they were just playing and having a great time. We were so wrong, it was engaging Roxy's prey drive. Then everything stopped when Roxy attacked Remy. A 60 lb pitbull against a 12 lb dachshund doesn't usually go well.
Luckily Remy was okay, some bruising to her neck but no punctures, but she was depressed the rest of the day.
We knew we needed help. Simply because we had no idea what had happened, why it happened, and how to make it right. All we knew to do was separate them, and that if this ever happened again we would lose one of our girls.
We got a recommendation from Rio Linda Pet Feed for Rebecca Brackney's Pet Services and she has changed our lives.
We brought Roxy to Rebecca for her bootcamp. She was gone for 5 weeks and it was incredibly difficult because we missed our baby, but it was eye-opening. We came home from work and there was no barking and whining when we walked through the door. We laid on the couch and watched TV without a bully taking our spot when we got up. We were able to take the baby gate down and our cats got to roam the house without fear of being eaten. We didn't have any potty messes to clean inside the house. I missed Roxy, but I realized how much she had affected our lives on a daily basis.
We attended Rebecca's weekly Foundation Class. We learned the fundamentals of owning a good dog. We learned what to train, how to train, when to train. We integrated dog training into our lives using Remy, so we could transfer everything we learned to Roxy when we got her back.
Rebecca gave us videos, called us all the time, and showed a huge amount of compassion for Roxy at every turn. She told us bluntly what we did wrong, and what we needed to fix. She is an expert in nutrition, grooming, training, and everything canine. Anytime I have a question, I can call or text her for an answer.
Roxy is home now, and she is thriving. We keep our home calm for her, and she is able to relax. Too many times she would jump up from her nap if I was to get up from the couch. Now she can sleep, and not be disturbed. I think of how exhausting her life must have been to be on guard 24/7 and ridden with anxiety. I know she lives a better life, and I know we do too. Her progress has been amazing, but there is more ahead! I know Rebecca will be with us for the long haul to help us to continue to manage Roxy & Remy to maintain a happy stress-free home!
