It seems a lot of the reviews for this place are from people who haven't had Peruvian cuisine before but it seemed worth a go so we gave it a try. This place surely has it's positives and negatives but overall it's a decent option if you're in the mood for some Peruvian food. Below is my brief pros/cons. Pros: * The quality of the ingredients seemed very good. Tender meat, fresh veggies, etc. * The sauce for the lomo saltado was excellent (albeit peppery but I like lots of pepper). * Very friendly staff * They have grassfed beef BUT it's limited to their Paleo menu which seems ridiculous if you just want grassfed beef but don't want to eat a Paleo diet. Cons: * Fairly pricey for Peruvian food. Lomo saltado was $14 and that's pretty much mainly a plate of french fries and rice with a small amount of meat. Some reviews say that the portions however the lomo saltado was average to undersized compared to other restaurants. * Their Aji Verde is pretty lacking in flavor. I think it needs some mayo or salt or something. That's too bad too because I love aji verde made right. * I didn't see any Aguadito de Pollo on the menu. * I feel like they are catering to a non-Latin American crowd with things like a Paleo diet menu and a Taste of Lima etc. Not sure how happy I was about that. * They up sell a bit too hard. We were only having lunch and they were trying to up sell us to fairly expensive and large dishes, dessert, coffee, etc. I'm used to getting lomo saltado for around $10 and that's with a side soup and a basket of bread. With that said, I'd go back unless I can find a more reasonably priced Peruvian restaurant in the area with similar quality and a bit less Americanized. The hunt will continue.... read more

The food here is amazing I went here with my boyfriend this past weekend. Omg It's our new favorite place. This is my 2nd time eating here and ive been satisfied everytime. I ordered the special called tacu tacu which is a rice and bean pancake with fried yuca, plantains, and chicken. It was a bit pricey but it was worth it seeing as how it was a huge plate of food and also a special dish. The space is clean and inviting. The staff is so kind and friendly I felt very welcome there almost like family. Me and my boyfriend enjoyed it so much we're thinking of going back the following weekend with my dad lol. I'm not sure I would call this authentic Peruvian restaurant, because it's more of a Americanized-Peruvian food! I did not like ceviche much because it had way too much cilantro. I felt like I was eating soap. The main dishes were pretty good but definitely lacked that little something to make them special. This restaurant is NOT a place you want to eat. It is noisy, crowded, and disorganized. The people at the other table are just a few feet and the entire conversation can be heard even though nobody is being loud. The staff is unsure about the specials and wrote down wrong orders. They even charged us for items we did not receive. The place is on the second floor and is extremely crowded. I've had a Peruvian different places, and this place is the best in the area bar none. There is a special lunch menu also if you want to try a smaller portion and some of the wonderful soups! The owner is extremely friendly and makes it a point to learn the customer's names, something you don't get to see very often any more unfortunately. The food is spot on, the Peruvian Style Lo-mein and Fried Rice are fresh and steaming when they come out, tons of flavor and extremely generous portions, most folks I'd bet would take home some of their dish for later. The Saltado I also found very tasty times I've had that. Check the specials, there are often hidden gems on there that aren't on the regular menu, if you see the Green Spaghetti on the menu order it, you won't be sorry! Dessert is also very nice, I'd recommend the Tres Leches Cake, very good! Overall, a wonderful restaurant and experience, I'd highly recommend it! read more

I absolutely love this place I have been going consistently this past year and it never fails me. I love that it's byob and I love the people who work here. They always know what I want and suggest some pretty great specials.. They are celebrating their anniversary so go and grab there 20% off cards and bring a group when you do. The lomo is outstanding and being peruvian I have had my fair share of all types from.different restaurants. I highly recommend Sabor Peru! Added note: Went here this past Sunday and they have a special called Sangria Sundays which is FREE sangria all day! For our appetizer we ordered the papa rellena again because it was really good the first time (there's this sauce that is super spicy but so tasty). Also ordered a dish that we shared and it was called the Taste of Lima. This dish consisted of Lomo Saltado, Chaufa, and a peruvian beef lo mein. Absolutely amazing. I'm never one to write a review on anything...good or bad! The staff had an opportunity tonight to make things right but chose to turn a blind eye. We were a party of 10 people for a 7:30 reservation. We got appetizers after 9 and dinner after 10. Steaks were very undercooked so we sent them back only to get them completely charred, like you could scrape the black shit off of it. When they asked how the food was we were very honest. They offered to cook me a brand new steak but at this his point I was eating dinner at 10 so I said no. It should have been removed from the bill in my opinion. The food is overpriced. I wasn't going to leave a review but since the owner lied and called my son a liar now I will leave a review to refute the lies this woman made. At no point did we do or say anything that would indicate that we would not pay. This was the second time we were there and we did not complain about the prices either time. The owner did ramble a lengthy list of "specials" in a way that was comical because it was just nonsensical. A special indicates a special deal NOT a specialty. You need to say these are our specialty dishes not specials. There is a difference between special and specialty! The food is overpriced because it is not great it is just acceptable. As I said before nice try with the decor but neither the food nor the decor is authentic Peruvian. You want to be pricey? That's fine but rise to the level where you are worthy of charging those prices. I want to walk in and be wowed by the decor, the atmosphere, the food. You have some lifeless drums throughout, they are dusty (clean them weekly at least). Putting drums throughout the restaurant does not make it a Peruvian restaurant. Pricey items on the menu don't make the food excellent and the restaurant elegant. You certainly are not a Latina because the Latino culture is kind, happy, warm and the Latino food, good Latino food, is yummy, para chuparse los dedos. You have a lot of room for improvement. We will not return, there is no reason to return to this place. Think before you write responses to your reviews because you falsely accused my son of lying and then YOU proceeded to lie. Everything else can be improved on in your restaurant but when you lie that speaks of your character and that can't be fixed. This restaurant I has only a small doorway on Bloomfield Ave but if you go up to the second floor you will find a charming restaurant with several rooms. The food was unusual and delicious. We had an interesting ceviche topped with fried seafood. My churrasco steak was as topped with chimmichurri-,so good! The flan was also very good and the service was good and very friendly. Sabor Peru is my boyfriends and I favorite place for Peruvian food. We have been to their restaurant a few times in the past.However, it has been a while since we have been there approximately 4 years. They recently moved to Caldwell and I was a bit skeptical at first but I must say they converted it in to a very cozy place. The vibe it gives me, reminds me of being at a family members house. Very nicely decorated and the food is amazing! We had papa a la huacaina for an appetizer and a lomo and chicken saltdo as our entree and a tres leche and 2 coffees. All amazing. When we left there we could barely walk out, it was so good that I couldn't say no to the food even though I knew I shouldn't try to fit any more food in my poor stomach. It was just amazing and they are also good for those on a diet as they specialize in paleo and vegetarian meals. The couple that owns the place are so sweet and accommodating. I'm so happy that we decided to revisit this cozy place. I definitely recommend going there. read more

Overall, a confusing, ultimately disappointing experience. Went with a Groupon which included 2 appetizers, 4 dinners and 2 desserts. Decor was beautiful and the restaurant was immaculate. 1st odd point - Asked for a different table and was told by Horacio, "No, sorry. That table is reserved. The party didn't show up until 45 minutes later. WHAT? Service was okay but the waitress wasn't well-spoken. Ordering was a bit difficult but we eventually got the order straightened out. 2nd odd point - Ordered a Diet Coke. Asked if refills were free and the waitress laughed and said No.I am glad I asked because sodas are $2 each. We ordered the Papa Rellenes and Empanadas, 3 Churrascos and the Bistec A Lo Pobles. We had the Tres Leches and Pumpkin Cheesecake. All plates were very flavorful and delicious. 3rd ODD POINT & HERE'S THE PROBLEM - The bill felt like a bait and switch. The Groupon covered entrees up to $18 and desserts up to $6. Usually, when a waiter or waitress mentions a special in a reputable restaurant, they will also tell you the price right after. We felt they inflated the entree ($20 extra for the three entrees) and dessert prices ($8.50 for the cheesecake) to make sure they can charge customers a significant amount more than the Groupon value. This was never explained to us. We wound up paying $55 over the $44 Groupon for a $138 bill. So we saved $38, but i am not sure it was worth the trickery. All other low reviews say the same thing. The manager was also quite defensive and rude when we asked him to explain the bill. Customer service, especially in the restaurant business is an art form. My mom and I purchased 3 Groupons earlier this week for Sabor and were super excited to try! Being from Rutherford, I didn't realize there was a Peruvian restaurant in town. We used the Groupon for 2 (with three people). Our waitress was super helpful, explaining each dish and answering all of our questions. We ordered the Sampler to start and subbed empanadas (1 chicken & 1 beef), and came with 3 coconut shrimp, small salad, popcorn kernels and Papa Rellenas as well (mashed potato stuffed with steak). Well worth the $20, (an additional $3 if you have the Groupon, which gives you $17.95 to use toward your appetizer or ceviche). I ordered the Jalea sin Ropa which was a white fish, grilled and served in the tastiest soy-ish sauce with yuca and white rice on the side! It was topped with grilled calamari and shrimp, as well as raw onions. DELICIOUS! I could have drank a bottle of the sauce alone. My parents both ordered the Tacu Tacu with Grilled Chicken and Grilled Steak. Both were phenomenal and would highly recommend. Meat is served over rice and beans prepared in a wok and made into a pancake. Jalea was $24 and the Tacu Tacu specials were $25. Each was an additional $3 or so. For dessert, we ordered the Peruvian Chocolate Cake and it did not disappoint. The cake was very thicker and tasted like dark chocolate with a rich cocoa flavor. Another $2 was added to the bill for the $6.50 allotted dessert amount with our Groupon. The meal was delicious from beginning to end, as was the service and atmosphere. Prices are a bit on the higher end, but portions are large and if you have the Groupon totally worth it. However, I was a little surprised with the pricing limits of each item from the Groupon but still feel it was a great deal for a great meal! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Would recommend making a reservation. We went on a Friday night at 7 and it was packed. Also VERY LOUD inside and not the best for conversations. BYOB is another plus. read more
