One of the two fish n chips joints in town, and in many ways much better than the fancy overpriced one in Dlouha. Except for the actual fish.
WHAT THEY DO RIGHT
Atmosphere: feels like a proper chippy, informal and friendly, with crappy music playing on the radio.
Prices: Right on target; exactly what they should be
Service: friendly and fast
Portions: generous
Variety: fish n chips, sure, but also savoury pies, burgers, soup, sweets and more.
WHERE THEY FALL DOWN
Taste.
The fish... It tasted like it was either fried in really old grease, or fried, then set asidw for a while, then fried again. So the main taste is grease - old grease. The final bite actually made me gag.
And the vinegar they have on the tables is really weak. Watered down, maybe? Needed a LOT to try to mask the grease flavour. So went for ketchup, which helped some, but 12kc a packet seemed a bit ridiculous.
And there is almost bo seasoning on the fish or the chips. Putting salt on the phone tables lets you correct and this a little, but salt actually cooked ON the chips, or put on the fish fresh out of the fryer, tastes different. Better.
Too bad, because the fish itself is good. But the batter is kind of thick and... Well, grease is the word.
The mushy peas are great, though. Especially with a splash of vinegar and some salt.
Basically, I really want to recommend this place, but after three visits, just can't. read more
