I've gotten Ry Bread for lunch numerous times and never been disappointed. They consistently have great soups, salads & sandwiches. This is one of my favorite places in Fairmount. It's such a staple in the neighborhood. Ryan and Steph (the owner/manager) couldn't be kinder. Their scones are my favorite thing. My weekend often starts with walking to Rybread to get a blueberry scone, bacon & cheddar scone, and a cup of coffee. It makes for a pretty fantastic start to a Saturday. They also have fantastic salads and a great variety of sandwiches that are so fresh and affordable. The people are nice, and the food is good... When they get your order right. I've had a handful of times where I either received the wrong order entirely (and didn't notice until I got home) or they just messed up what I asked for. If you ask for anything that is not exactly how they usually make their sandwiches (add avocado, no onions, etc) definitely check before you leave that they got it right. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese. The problem was the spread of cream cheese was so thin you could see through it. It tasted like a dry bagel. It was awful. When you want a bagel with cream cheese you want to taste the cream cheese. With so many bagel places in Philly I'd never go back there again. So here's the thing, if you go cheap and try to save a few pennies on cream cheese, then the sandwich tastes awful, people will never go back, and they will give you bad reviews. Why wouldn't you try to make a great bagel that people will come back for? Really disappointed. read more

Stopped in for a sandwich on a Sunday morning with a friend. Very busy so we sat at the breakfast bar that overlooks the kitchen. When our paninis came out they were both completely BURNT. It was terrible. Green machine smoothie was ok but not worth $5. Very overpriced for low quality food. Two sandwiches and a smoothie cost $25 and it was only the sandwich, no sides at all. This is 4-star review only because I've only been here once. The sandwiches are fantastic -- no substitutions or special orders necessary. We ordered the Santa Monica (BLT with avocado) and the Rybread (crab cake on brioche with chipotle mayo), and both were fantastic. The restaurant is tiny but cheerful, and it was a great warm stop after our Eastern State Penitentiary tour (unheated, but also, yes, fantastic). This would also be a great alternative to the museum cafes, I think, as it's not far from the art museum -- and worth the walk. read more

Their Santa Monica sandwich and Santa Fe are my favorites, and Rybread(the one with crab cake in chipotle mayo) close third. I like their breakfast croissant sandwiches too. Driving around the city on a snow day with few options, my friend and I decided to play it safe and get some sandwiches. Rybread is that perfect neighborhood place to pick up a reasonable lunch of a sandwich, drink and chips, and have your hunger sated. It also must have been a fortunate day for me, because they had the Plymouth sandwich as a special. The Plymouth (as in the Plymouth Colony and Pilgrims) is the typical Thanksgiving sandwich with turkey, cranberry spread and stuffing. Pair that with a raspberry lemonade and a bag of Cape Cod chips and I was completely content with my lunch choice. My one complaint is too much mayo, it overwhelmed the cranberry spread. Although there was this one misstep, I will definitely be back, maybe even to try a different "regional" lunch concoction. read more

Here's my thing: this place has great food, but the worst service ever. I worked as a short order cook growing up and each time I go into this place, I am irritated because everything is a mess- and I know from experience. Again, the food is great- wonderful! But I have a 100% fail rate with them getting my order wrong or waiting for 15 plus minutes for a breakfast sandwich. That's crazy. Rybread is my favorite sandwich shop in Philly and my go-to weekend lunch spot. I only wish there were more places like it, as their formula for success doesn't seem overly complicated. I love the wide variety of options and the regional flair to each sandwich. My favorites are the Hollywood, the Santa, Fe, and the Tuscon. Be sure to add avocado and tomato to the Hollywood to really get the most out of it. I usually get take-out, but it's nice to sit outside and enjoy your meal in one of their outdoor tables in the front too sometimes. The sandwiches are hearty and filling, with high quality ingredients, so I always feel like I'm getting a bang for my buck there. read more

I live a few blocks from Rybread and want to love it but can't. I've been there several times and it's generally just ok - the service is usually slow but the food is generally fine and nothing to report on. I had a recent experience where i ordered a bagel with egg & cheese to go - should be a super easy thing to get right but once I got home I discovered the bagel was burnt to a crisp and barely edible. This little place is awesome! And when I say little, I mean little! There were three 2 seat tables inside, a couple tables out front on the sidewalk, and a small seating area out back. You have to be looking for this place if you're a tourist. Its a short walk from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Eastern State Penitentiary. Now the food. Wow! It was delicious! I got the Rybread Crabcake. Now, being from MD I was a little hesitant, but this is one of the best crabcakes I have ever had! The chipotle mayo on it was a great idea! My fiancé got the Buffalo Panini and that was also great! They also have bagels, salads, and muffins. Wish we could have tried them all!! I would absolutely go back when in the area. read more

This is a great little neighborhood coffee shop. The space is tiny and I don't actually love the coffee, but there is a great selection of salads and sandwiches and the service is always friendly. The breakfast sandwiches seem popular and my husband really likes them, but my biggest recommendation are the scones. If I happen to stop by on my way to work when the scones are just coming out of the oven, I can't resist. They are the perfect sweet, savory, buttery treat. Worth the splurge. read more

I think the "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" caption that comes along with a 5-star rating is a little exaggerated, but whatever. I feel more like "Yay! I'm a fan!" but I feel as if I owe Rybread an extra star for being an idiot. Here's what an idiot I am: I live a scant few blocks from Rybread but never visited them until yesterday. They've been open for what, almost a year? Damn me. The Santa Fe panini was AWESOME and I didn't even add cheese. I thought, as I ate it, that it didn't need cheese. That is a rarity coming from someone who loves cheese. Like, LOVES it. It was filling and substantial and such a good home-brunch. I got the sandwich and a cup of tasty coffee to go and sat on my couch and watched Road To Perdition. This was an excellent morning and an excellent meal. I will absolutely make this a neighborhood weekend destination. Their hours are a little short, but that's fine. All good things in moderation. Way to go Rybread, sorry it took me so long! read more

I work a few doors down from this business and have been very excited for this place to open, especially because a)it's not pizza and b)it's decent coffee that I can run out and get before anyone notices I am gone. I didn't expect it to be so cute inside (and outside! it has a great patio!) or that the owners and staff would be so nice. My coworkers and I are working our way through the menu, and so far we are impressed. The breakfast sandwiches are far better than anyone else's on the block, and - like the rest of the menu - very reasonably priced. In addition to meals for myself and my staff, I also purchased a bunch of treats for a bridal party at the last minute. They were very patient with my special requests as far as quartering bagels and halving muffins, and said with more notice they could put together a tray for me. I do agree with Lisa O, if they had lattes I would be totally head over heels, but even without I think they are a great addition to the Fairmount neighborhood! read more

We weren't as impressed by Rybread as everyone else. It was packed when we walked in, but the line to order moved fairly quickly. I ordered the Denver (chicken salad) and my bf ordered the San Diego or San Francisco (whichever one has grilled portabellos and eggplant. They don't offer cups of tap water - you have to buy bottles. There's no good place to stand and wait for your food...it is CRAMPED and you are constantly being plowed into. We also noticed that none of the workers were wearing gloves, which REALLY grossed us out (and I'm pretty sure that's against regulations). My bf's sandwich was really, really tiny for the price. Mine was good, I really liked the multigrain bread and the fact that it was light on the mayo. We sat outside and apparently there was an anarchists meeting next to us. It was so awkward...obviously not the restaurant's fault, but we just wanted to eat and scoot as quickly as possible. Overall, it was OK. I don't know if we would go back, particularly because of the lack of gloves (again, ew) and how small the veggie sandwich was for $6.75. read more

Rybread has the best bagel sandwich in Philadelphia, hands down. Living in Center City for several years, I was constantly disappointed by every bagel I tried from almost every shop in the area (I know, poor me). Then I moved to Fairmount and we found Rybread...finally a great bagel! While the bagels made me fall in love with this quaint shop, it's the smiling, friendly staff, solid coffee and unbelievable salads and sandwiches made on bread freshly baked on premises that have made this a successful long term relationship. Do yourself a favor and check them out. They stop serving breakfast at noon and if you go on a weekend morning, you may have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for your food because they can get busy. Or call ahead and they'll have your food ready when you get there. Trust me, you won't be disappointed! read more

Yet another terrible experience with this place this morning. I placed an online pickup through yelp and was told it would be ready in 30-40mins. When I get there 45 mins later to collect my order the lady tells me that it is not ready yet. I leave to run another errand and come back 15 minutes later. Again I ask the lady if my order is ready and after running around for a few minutes they tell me that the order was not even started and ask me what I want. At this point I told them to not even bother and I cancelled my order online. This is not the first time something like this has happened with this establishment. It either takes way too long, or you do not even get an order. Ever since they have moved locations it has not been the same. Lack of efficiency throughout the business. I've been here many times in the 5 years that I have lived in the neighborhood and this was the final nail in the coffin. My business will be going elsewhere. read more
