First thing he asked when I sat in his chair & got ready for the cut was "what are our goals for this haircut?" I really felt like he listened to what I wanted and waaaay outdid what I had pictured. I came in with an at home haircut which I've been doing myself for about 8 years now... Last time I decided I needed an at-home trim & shape, I went a liiiiiitttlleee heavy with the scissors on my right side lol not my best work. I have naturally curly hair so you couldn't really tell... until one day I decided to straighten it and oh my goodness was it crooked! hahah I needed a stylist bad and Ryan seriously came to my rescue. He owns the salon and even teaches at The Paul Mitchell Hair & Beauty School - you literally could not put your hair in better hands. Because of Chinese New Year coming up, I was yet again forced to cut my hair for good luck. The only good haircut experience I had was with Allen back at his old job location but when I found out he left, I was wondering where would I cut my hair now??? Of course with the power of social media, I saw that my friend got her hair cut by Allen who was now at Ryanjacobie! I was excited to make an appointment with a groupon that I found for a deep-conditioning treatment + haircut for less than $50 -- what a steal! When I made my appointment, I asked who I was assigned to and I was told it would be Allen, yay! Following Yelp's directions, I took the bus and walked to where I was supposed to be but I kept circling around this one area trying to find the shop...the map said I was here yet it was nowhere to be found??? The reason why it was so hard to find was because their sign was stolen so you could easily walk by without noticing. Thank goodness I'm an early bird because I still had 15 minutes to spare before my appointment time. Now I thought Allen would be taking care of me but instead Siera came out and said she would be helping me today. I was slightly sad because I was told Allen would be my stylist but it wasn't really a big deal since Siera definitely delivered as well! It was a bit awkward at first because there wasn't really any talking and she didn't really explain to me how the deep-conditioning treatment would work until I asked her. I saw one of their staff who was a recent graduate but not tier 1 or whatever they call their most professional staff, so maybe I got what I paid for, but she acted like it was her first time ever cutting haole hair. She did what most people do when they don't know how to cut fine (as in not thick) white girl hair... She washed it first. Most stylists know to cut it dry, then wash it. The shampoo experience and how nice the salon staff are is what made me give it 4 stars instead of 3. They used sparkling water to rinse my hair!! It was orgasmic! The head massage was also on point. She took her time, and I was left feeling so so good. Until I got a crappy haircut!! My bangs were literally the worst I've ever seen them besides the time I cut them when I was in kindergarten. No joke. I asked her to try to fix them but she could only marginally improve the botched job. I had to go home and try to salvage them. Freaking horrendous. I wore a lot of barrettes and cringe whenever I see photos from that time in my life. Actually, after reliving the experience via this Yelp review, I'm going to give this place a 3. I'm sure paying extra for a professional is more worth it here. He explained that while he doesn't offer the dry-cut style of DevaCuts he does know how to cut curly hair -- I was apprehensive but decided to book an appointment because I was tired of calling around for DevaCuts with no success. Can I just say that my loyalty now resides with a new stylist? Haha. I found Ryanjacobe Salon on Yelp (obviously) because I desperately needed to update my grown out, blonde ombré summer hair and my usual stylist was booked solid for the whole week. The receptionist scheduled me with Landon, which I firmly believe was fate working her magic. I asked for subtle, purple peek-a-boo highlights and a very layered cut. I was very pleased with my service at this salon. First calling to make an appointment they were very professional. They asked what I was having done and what my price point was. I really appreciated getting an estimate as I don't normally dye my hair. I was given the option of two stylists. I selected Stasee and I was so impressed with her work. I told them I normally take an hour for just a wash, cut, and style. They quoted me 2.5hours for adding the color I wanted. Stasee got me in and out in just over 2 hours. I have had the pleasure of two sessions with Ashley. She is amazing! Her personality and spirit are awesome. I went to her after a bad experience with my former stylist who I was with for quite a while. Ashley was able to lighten my hair after a misunderstanding with my former stylist. She was very gentle with my brittle and damaged hair. Not only was she gentle with my damaged hair but she also explained the products she was putting in my hair and the benefits of each. During my second session I told her I wanted to go lavender, she went a deeper purple but I was ecstatic nonetheless. Ashley explained it would lighten after a couple of washes and I had complete faith in her knowledge. I walked out of the salon stoked with my purple hair. 4-5 hair washes later and I have reached the lavender/silver color I had in mind. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! First time customer at Ryanjacobie and I'm in love. I had Kristian as my hairstylist. She did a wonderful job! I went in for a cut and some dimensional coloring this past Saturday and she went above and beyond. She walked me through what she was going to do and she was very informative, personable, and easy to talk with. I haven't colored my hair since 2016 nor got it professionally colored, so I was slightly nervous, but she was very pleasant and gentle. I have a lot of hair and natural curls/wave, so I felt so bad because it was a lot. But she was very determined and she was definitely in the zone when it came to coloring my hair. I found it comforting how concentrated she was and how gentle she was with my hair, it felt like she wanted to go above and beyond and she did. She really did. Especially from time to time she asked me whether I was okay and I was, I was mostly in awe by her work, but I appreciated that she checked up on how I was doing. She is amazing. After the cut and color, my boyfriend came to pick me up and was in love with the hair. He kept taking photos of it and made me pose from time to time and in public! HAHA! Honestly I love the hair and I loved the service. I can't help but reiterate how great she was. When she finally showed me my new hair, I literally told her "she was going to make me cry." As I'm sitting in those hair drying thingamabobs that isn't heating my hair, I have to say it's a quaint hippy-esque feel of a salon. Feeling bored with my long hair and mundane color, I yelped salons and Ryan Jacobie was on top. Normally I don't even look at new salons, but with Min being on a budget, and Ryan Jacobie having a special, I said why not. The space is a three or four seat salon with an urban contemporary feel, but with my picky eyes, bad paint jobs and colors. Once you're seated, you have your consultation, and since I had product in my hair, I was taken to the shampooing area. Oh the shampooing area; the water pressure was VERY strong and very hot. I could feel the heat just emanating from the ceramic sink heating and opening my pores on my scalp. It was hot, no matter how much he asked if it was better, it was still "hot". After the shampoo ordeal, I'm seated back in my chair and asked how I want the color. For an ninety minutes worth, the color and cut turned out well. In between, Ryan asked if I wanted refreshments or a magazine, which is in par with other salons I've gone to. The first experience wasn't bad, I might actually go again. I made an appointment with Deena from RyanJacobie Salon on a Saturday at 11:45 a.m. FOUR HOURS and one pretty bad haircut later I left, feeling exhausted and disappointed. No color, no highlights, not even a deep conditioning treatment - just a haircut that took four hours. I came with a game plan - several pictures of the cut I wanted from different angles. Two hours in, I told her that I understood that I'm not going to look exactly like the picture - hair texture, face shape, etc. - I get it. Really. But when the picture shows hair that's about 3 inches long on top, and my hair is still down past my chin, we have a problem. If she thought that it wasn't the cut for me, she never said so. And until Davey intervened (see below) she never even got close to a loose interpretation of the style that I wanted. I used the upside-down bowl analogy twice, and even she was going, "I know, I know..." At least three separate times, I said that I wanted to just stop and cut my losses. I looked horrible, but I just wanted to get out of that chair! Several other stylists came over to give her advice, and FINALLY someone asked her to hand over her scissors. Davey took one look at the pictures I brought, made a little 'uh-huh' noise, and in less than five minutes, he had me back on track - on the right side of my head, anyway. He then handed the scissors back over, and she did try to do the left side, and it started to look a little better, but I still was not happy. But by then, I had completely disengaged from the process, and just wanted to leave. If you've seen my other yelps, you know that I am not afraid to give 1-star ratings. The reason that I am somewhat reluctantly giving a second star is because, given the amount of frustration on both sides, she never gave up! I gotta admire that kind of tenacity. Also, when I was leaving, she gave me Davey's business card, saying that she would be right there watching when I decided to come see him. I love that she is going to use this as a learning experience, and she did thank me for giving her a chance to learn and expand her skills. Okay, before going into this review keep in mind that I do not go to the salon...ever. Up until this visit to RyanJacobie I've been letting my 17-year-old niece cut my hair and dyeing my hair out of a box. So what? I'm broke. My hair is very long and my bangs grew out and it just kept getting in my face and since I go to school in town, I had enough. I looked on Yelp and found RyanJacobie. After wandering on Smith St., I found this beautiful gem, walked in and was instantly greeted by two gentleman. YES! They were taking walk-ins so I sat down, filled out a customer form, and I'm guessing it was Ryan? offered me water,tea, or coffee. SHUT THE FRONT DOOR I've never been to a salon that offered that. After filling out the form, Davey, my man of the hour sat me down and asked what I wanted. I didn't even have to say much, I could have sworn I said something around the lines of, "cut bangs, cut little bit of hair" and I thought to myself, was that too general? But he knew what I wanted...like he read my mind or something. Davey took me in the back to their shampoo area that has a very nice serene ambiance, really great after the hustle & bustle of school and town. There were candles lit and easy listening (you know what I'm talking about) music playing. After scolding me about not going to a salon...ever (yeah I deserved it) Davey gave me the most awesome head massage (that sounds wrong but whatev). My hair is thin (my filipino genes didn't kick in here) so he shampooed and conditioned my hair with the lemon sage thickening line from Paul Mitchell. Afterwards, I got to do the thing I never thought I would be doing...reading magazines at a salon. I was thinking in my head, damn this is legit haha. Anyway... He cut my hair perfectly. He knew that length was important to me so he just cut off an inch and it still looked very long. He gets an A+++ on my bangs because I'm so picky when it comes to them. Needless to say, Davey gave me the works, using products that would help my hair regain it's health and even straightened it (I never straighten my hair). I think one of the things I loved most about this salon was that I felt like I was visiting the salon with my friends. Usually salons intimidate me but the whole time I was talking story with them and they were so friendly. Another is that they're willing to work with you, especially when you're on tight budget like I am. They really do go above and beyond to cater to their customers. I also got free shampoo for checking in with Yelp :) so that was another plus. Yeah, RyanJacobie just gained another loyal customer. Will definitely come back. read more
