I can't say enough good things about Kemlage Family Dentistry, but I'm going to give it my best…read moreshot. The first time I visited the Kemlages was on a Saturday afternoon. My former dentist's office was closed and I was in a fix because a crown had come off during breakfast. They squeezed me in after a very short wait and sent me on my way in a few minutes. On my first "official" visit, Andrew Kemlage gave me the ten-cent tour of the office and showed me all the modern dentistry tools including a machine that makes crowns in an hour and a 360-degree X-ray machine that can even peer into your sinus cavities. Andrew's father Thomas is much closer to my age and I suspect part of the motivation for such an investment in all the latest gee-whiz technology is to make certain everything is shipshape for that time in the future when Thomas hangs up his probes, retractors, and burs for good. That committment to the tools of the trade helps make Andrew a good dentist and Thomas an even better father. When you first enter this clean and bright office, you get the best array of magazines I have ever seen in a waiting room. Sadly, my wait time has always been too brief to read even a single article. I have six (or so) crowns, six (or so) root canals, four (or so) extractions, and two dental implants in my mouth. To say I know my way around a dentist's office is an understatement. I've met a herd of hygienists, a troop of technicians, a swarm of secretaries, a pride of periodontists, and a drove of dentists in my lifetime. As you can imagine, these have not been happy hours for me. The people who worked at the dentist's offices have frequently been my lifeline. Everyone at Kemlage Family Dentistry is personable, friendly, professional and neat. A wrinkle on a uniform would die of loneliness in this office. Andrew is one of those rare people who, when you're talking to him, gives you his full and undivided attention. Lots of medical people suffer from One-Foot-Out-The-Door-Disease, but Andrew isn't one of them. He takes the time to explain everything. I may not make all the right decisions, but I have all the germane information. After two potentially painful appointments, Andrew even had the courtesty, professionalism, and just plain decency to call me at home that evening to ask how I was doing. I've not had the pleasure of working with Andrew's father Thomas, but I'm sure Andrew hasn't fallen far from the tree. Imagine for a moment how much time I devoted to crafting this review and think back to the last time you were this happy with a business and the people who work there. If you're looking for a new dentist or even if you're not, please come to Kemlage Family Dentistry for a visit.

If I could leave 0 stars, I would. I am not one to write bad reviews. My whole family came here for…read moreyears. In 2017, I got a botched root canal from them and it almost killed me. Not exaggerating. For months I went to them saying I had tooth pain all over. In 2017, one day my front big tooth was in excruciating pain - the worst pain I've ever felt. My whole face hurt so bad I didn't sleep for days until the next business day (3 days later) when I finally went to the dentist and they said my tooth had died and the root was decaying and that was the reason for the pain - all the gas was trapped in my root pocket and radiating. They did a root canal, which I've heard is supposed to be one of the worst pains in life. But let me tell you, that was the most relieving because I was numb. When they opened the tooth and removed the root, you could SMELL the decay. Immediately after, I had a little pain but was mostly numb. I asked the dentist since there was so much decay, do I need antibiotics. I asked multiple times and he insisted I didn't. That was the biggest mistake. That evening and overnight, the pain resumed, my face started to swell And I started getting a fever. I went to a different dentist the following morning and that dentist said "why on earth wouldn't he have given you an antibiotic?" He flushed the root pocket again and temporary plugged it and sent me home with an antibiotic. He said it looked like there was some infection in my facial tissue now so the antibiotics may not be strong enough, so if fever and swelling continues, go to the ER. The following day, my face swelled more and my fever and pain surged and my eye pretty much was swollen shut at this point so we went to the ER. They immediately took me back and gave me steroids, a CT scan and started vancomycin. I was admitted and held for 4 days at the hospital on high doses of vanc and it was the most miserable experience of my life. Multiple doctors said if I hadn't come in to the er when I did I could've lost my eye or died because I had such severe facial cellulitis from the root canal. After all of that, my family and I went to Kemlage and told him everything that had happened. We asked him to at least pay the hospital bills (over $1000) He refused. The only thing he did was not make us pay for the botched root canal. Photos attached.

They've typically gone above and beyond, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I've had to reschedule my three kids' cleanings a couple of times due to illness, and this time I left work early and picked my kids up from school early to make our 2:00 PM appointment. My middle daughter was delayed returning from a field trip, so as soon as we got her, we headed straight to the office. I called right away to let them know we'd be about 10 minutes late, and was told there is a strict 10-minute policy. I said I would do my best to make it within that window. We arrived and walked in at exactly 2:10 PM, but were immediately told we'd have to reschedule. I explained the situation and asked if there was any flexibility--even just to have two of my kids seen--but was told no. I understand having policies in place, but it was frustrating that there was zero flexibility, especially when we made every effort to get there and communicated ahead of time. What made it more disappointing is that we've had multiple visits where we've waited 10+ minutes to be seen without issue. It felt like there wasn't the same consideration given in return. After years of being loyal patients, this experience was really disheartening, and unfortunately, we will not be returning.

After posting my review, I received several calls from Eureka Dental Group. First was from the…read morePatient Account Specialist and she did help explain the new charges but was still unwilling to give me an appointment until I gave them a "reservation fee" of $120. She said my crown was there but I could not get it until I paid her for a reservation. While I did have the money, I was unwilling to pay to make an appointment. I think their policy of paying to make an appointment is ridiculous and unheard of. There are simply way too many dentists in Eureka to have to abide by such a draconian policy. The second call I received was from the Office Manager, and she did seem to care about my frustrations and did agree to a payment plan to address the additional (hidden/uninformed) charges. She also lowered the reservation fee from $120 to $100. She explained the reservation fee would be applied towards my procedure; that they employ this concept on longer procedures to help ensure patients show up for their appointments. Although I emphatically disagree with the reservation fee concept, I did pay it (crown hostage fee) so I could make an appointment. Personally, I think Eureka Dental Group should adopt a no-show policy in line with other doctors that charge a no-show fee rather than charging a reservation fee. A couple of days later I received a call from Dr. Wehrmeister. He indicated it was his day off and he was calling because his Office Manager had informed him of my concerns and he wanted to try an address them. Dr. Wehrmeister seemed to genuinely care about my issues with Eureka Dental Group and I was impressed he took the time to call me on his day off to talk thru my recent experiences. After about a 20-minute conversation I felt comfortable Eureka Dental Group valued me as a patient and cared for my satisfaction, despite their unwillingness to concede the reservation fee policy. I went on about my day and received a second call from Dr. Wehrmeister about 15-minutes following our previous conversation. To my surprise, Dr. Wehrmeister said he talked with his Office Manager and they felt the fair thing to do was to pick-up my out of pocket increase that was not communicated to me until after the fact. This was one of my biggest concerns/complaints and I feel they have adequately addressed this concern. Likewise, I am changing my review from 1-star to 4-stars and will give EDG another opportunity to retain my business. Thank you, Dr. Wehrmeister and Eureka Dental Group Team!!
