Upside: Cute hotel in a great small town. Bed comfy. Ample room for our travel gear. You must dine at Blackboard Cafe just a couple doors away. ***** Street side room~windows and fans only. No A/C in our unit~not ideal but cooled down at night with windows open (street noise came late as pubs closed but was short lived). Downside: Cigarette odor hit us as soon as we stepped into the main stairway from outdoors. Smell lingered our whole stay as we think possibly it used to be a smoking establishment and that odor is hard to remedy with old carpet in common areas. Room was clean, not as bad as smelling as out of the room. Shower had a cigarette burn on the shower lip (see photo). Texted the mgr but she was apparently not feeling well. No reply was ever rec'd so hoping she is ok now. 3.5 stars read more

We traveled from Southern California to ride the Cour d'Alene and Hiawatha bike trails on our e-bikes and stayed at the Ryan Hotel for two nights. The Ryan Hotel is well over 110 years old but has been scrupulously restored and maintained. The owner, Donna, was friendly, gracious and incredibly accommodating. Admittedly there is no large screen television (or any television) and no jacuzzi or swimming pool, but we did not drive over 1,000 miles to experience a cookie-cutter hotel. Excellent internet, excellent continental breakfast and the convenience of being able to store our ebikes overnight in am adjacent store front on street level was great. Since Wallace has proclaimed itself the "Center of the Cosmic Universe," the Ryan Hotel is the center of Wallace!! read more

Looked online, wanted something that was "interesting" beyond the usual la quintas and Fairfields. Glad I found The Ryan. Reached out ahead per the email request about info to get in "after hours". Did so and Donna texted right away with easy and clear instructions. Room was set up, lights were on, WiFi password and everything left out for me. Great coffee in the am, super clean and well-kept property. Certainly older with the creaks on the floor - EXACTLY what I was hoping for. Fridge in room, super comfortable bed, great local recs. I ended up staying overnight in Wallace unexpectedly and starting calling hotels looking for vacancies at around 8 pm. One didn't answer, one was full and then Donna (the owner I believe) responded saying that she had one room with two queens. When I arrived she was very kind and welcoming and discounted my room since I didn't need the other bed as I was alone and even gave me a free toothbrush and toothpaste since I hadn't packed anything as I expected to be going home that night. This hotel is utterly pristine, reasonably priced, centrally located and old fashioned in a precious way that deserves to be preserved. I have so much respect for Donna for maintaining high standards and having such a hospitable spirit. Thank you so much! read more

WOW! ...If you're looking for a Holiday Inn, Wyndham or Marriott... keep on looking. But if you would like to step back into time (early 1900's) and experience something special, this is it! This entire town was preserved on the Historical Registry (including the Ryan Hotel) keeping it from being bulldozed when Interstate 90 was built. Hence... The freeway that is now on stilts over part of the city. The town is full of antique shops and the Ryan Hotel has a great share of them also, throughout all the rooms and more! Please overlook the original sink that remains here or there that doesn't have a perfect finish. Forgive them if your bedroom only has one electrical outlet. Instead, enjoy the beautiful carpeting, antique furniture and elegant and unique bedrooms from a time which once was. We heard from both the host and a restaurant downtown that large groups rent this place. We can see why. We loved it and plan on returning with friends. We stayed at the Ryan en route from WA to ID. The hotel is on the second floor, so there's one set of stairs to climb. And, the front door is kept locked, so guests have keys, but the public can't walk in. This is because the family who owns the hotel lives there, so it's their home! Rooms are small but incredibly clean, and the bedlinens and towels are bright white and sparkling. Our room (#16) was in the rear and represented as being very quiet. We heard absolutely nothing from other guests or from outside...really remarkable. My husband left his phone charger in our room, and the management offered to send, did so immediately. Very gracious. It's clear these folks care about their guests and have high standards of service. Kudos! read more

If you are expecting a quiet night sleep, this is not the place for you. Between the extremely thin walls, creaking floors, rattling pipes and 4 wheeler driving up and down the street for an hour at 5am you're guaranteed fragmented sleep your entire stay. Aside from the noise, the place is cute, especially if you have an affection for old buildings. We opted for a room with a private bath knowing it would be frowned upon to dart from our room to a shared bath in various stage of undress. The shower is definitely a one person stall with just enough room to turn around, though you will likely smack your elbows at least four times. The bed was comfortable enough with clean linens but the pillow situation could use some improving. Too many decorative pillows and not enough utility pillows. The staff is friendly and booking was easy. Problem is... when you're renting a room, it's typically with the intention of sleeping and that just didn't happen. Word to the wise... bring ear plugs. Or maybe they should just keep a bowl of complimentary ear plugs.... everywhere. read more

Lovely place to stay in downtown historic Wallace. Reminiscent of the Weatherford Hotel in Flagstaff. We had the room with the soaking tub, which was wonderful. Attentive staff, comfy bed, very nice visit. We'll stay there again now that we know about it. Like Europe, be ready to climb/descend a couple flights of stairs to get in and out! read more

I would have loved for my stay here to have been like what other reviews led me to believe it would be. We stayed here as part of a cross-country road trip. Trust me, I'm not a princess. The Ryan itself is hosted in a charming building in downtown. Making a reservation was easy and Donna was very friendly. When we arrived, we were disappointed to find that the rooms weren't "vintage," but "old" and in need of a deep scrub. The blankets on our bed were covered in dark hairs and the sheets were wrinkled, leading us to question if they had been changed at all. While some of the rooms had newer carpet, ours was visibly dirty. The window in our room faced a brick wall. After a few hours, we decided that this hotel wasn't for us and left. Donna was friendly about refunding our charge. Sadly, no other hotels are in the area and we had to skip biking the nearby Hiawatha trail. read more

Eureka! I just checked in 30 minutes ago, so I'm not ruling out major catastrophes occurring in the next few hours, but barring any malevolent hauntings from the old silver miners this place deserves all 5 stars. The owner was extremely kind and accommodating, and the facilities maintain the perfect amount of quaintness/historicism, in that the rooms are simple and old-fashioned, but there are modern toilets and showers instead of the more traditional outhouses and mud-pits. If you want a big dumb TV and a spa and a room that costs 2x as much, check into a nice Holiday Inn or better yet stay home! At the Ryan, the minor inconveniences, such as thin walls and potentially shared restrooms are easy to overlook and in fact truly play into the overall experience of stepping into a simpler world. If you want a hotel that feels personal yet professional, old-fashioned yet timeless, then stay at the Ryan Hotel. read more

I stayed here on a recommendation of a cousin who is a regular guest. I was able to park on the street in front of the hotel (free parking). For those who haven't checked out more about either the town of Wallace (entire town is on historic register....they had to build interstate 90 over it, literally!) or the Ryan Hotel, please Google it! As others have mentioned, the proprietress Donna is very gracious. As it was a busy wkd (with the Accordion Festival in town and more), there were no rooms with two beds so Donna was willing to accommodate my aunt on the bed and me sleeping on the floor and made sure we got the room with the most floor space! Obviously when you choose to stay in a location known for it's historic charm, rather than modern conveniences you get a few quirks. But, for me, that's something generally to be relished. Make sure you allow at least a few hours to explore the town on foot, from the WPA swimming pool to the 42 flights (or some such ridiculous#!) of public stairs up the mountain side to the Fainting Goat's special red wine tap or Eureka Sally's art and chocolate to the depot or bordello museums across the way. read more

I had a wonderful overnight stay at the Ryan Hotel. I loved the historical charm of my room, the building, and the entire town. It was like stepping back in time and enjoying the peace and quiet from yesteryear. Donna was like an old friend and made me feel right at home. I enjoyed a relaxing soak in the claw foot tub and then slept so soundly, waking to a yummy fruit and muffins breakfast; the bed was very comfortable and my room was very clean. I wish that I had more time to explore, but I didn't. That just gives me reason to plan an entire weekend in Wallace, ID, and I would love to stay at the beautiful Ryan Hotel in the future! read more

Rolled into town (literally- on our bikes) on a weekday around noon during a horrible fire season. The town was so smoky that it burned your eyes and throat if you were out too long in it. We arrived a few hours before check-in, but decided to give it a try. We were greeted at the front door with a big smile by Donna, who I believe owns the place. We apologized for being so early, but she said no problem and invited us in out of the smoke. Mind you- we were in our cycling gear and I was towing a Bob trailer. She said it was fine to bring our gear in and store it in the basement. She had two rooms ready for us and we could choose one to our liking. It was fantastic to come in early and get cleaned up after roughly 35 miles on the bike! The bed was just fine, and the room was very quaint. She made us feel at home the whole time and we had a fabulous time in Wallace despite the crappy air quality. We would be more than happy to stay again the next time we visit Wallace! read more

Wonderful historic hotel right across from the Bordello museum. Donna was so nice and welcoming, she took the time to show us around the hotel and tell great stories about its history and past residents. Each room is beautifully and individually decorated. It's like stepping back in time. We stayed in a room that had its own bathroom, but there are some rooms that have shared baths and facilities. We took a look at the shared baths and they are so nice I'm sure that would be no problem. A light breakfast of fruit, pastries, coffee and tea is in the lobby in the morning. I highly recommend this hotel. It is affordable excellence. read more

This is exactly what we were looking for. Beautiful town to walk and shop in. The Ryan Hotel is very historic and preserved that way. As you pull up to the hotel you call the front desk and they come down to let you in. Lovely lady (over achiever I'd say) comes down and helps us in, bags and all. Our group was taken up to the second floor where all the rooms are located and we were given the task of walking around and picking our own room. My wife and I had already booked the owners suite so we helped our friends look. The town of Wallace has plenty of history and we found the locals were eager to share what they knew. With two breweries in town we found plenty of places to stop and enjoy. read more

The owners of this hotel were all extremely nice, welcoming, and helpful. The hotel is historic and matched the town with the sort of antiquated, frozen-in-history feel. We stayed at the Ryan Hotel while on a road trip. We checked in at 9pm. Jade met us at the door and couldn't have been more welcoming. Everything was ready and she was clearly expecting us. The room was simply adorned but very clean and nice. We were up and out early the next morning to be on our way. Jade was setting up breakfast in the lobby as we got rolling. Our stay at the Lux Rooms was wonderful. Donna checked us in and even gave us a quick tour of the rest of the building and a brief rundown of the history behind the former bordello. She also gave us good suggestions for dinner and the night life. Paying extra for the Madame's Suite was definitely worth every penny; we had plenty of room, a closet full of robes, and didn't have to worry about jockeying for position in one of the shared bathrooms that the smaller rooms had to use. It was a wonderful and memorable experience, and we'd love to come back some time. read more

Can I say WOW! My husband and I were in desperate need of a place to stay. With little service through the pass coming back from a miserable trip I lucked out with finding this gem! The manager/owner upon arrival, was the friendliest face we had come across in our travels. She was so inviting and caring we couldn't help but fall in love with the hotel even more. It was like stepping back in time. We booked a single room and she upgraded us to a suite! How amazing! It made the stay in the little hidden town of Wallace even better. I originally booked a room at the Lux, across the street, but I travel alone and it felt a little more isolated than I was comfortable with. The two places are owned by the same people, so I was able to stay at the Ryan instead. You do have to climb up one fairly steep staircase to get to the check-in desk and rooms, but the owner (Donna?) carried my bag up the stairs, and I survived. There is such an Old West feeling to the place that I immediately fell in love with it. They are in the process of renovating, and I hope they get the sink in my room replaced because it was desperately chipped, but the room was large, quaint, clean, and delightful. It had a small fridge, and a TINY bathroom. I didn't think I would make it through the evening with no tv, but I did :) I would definitely stay there again. read more

First of all, look at this ridiculously adorable town. Holy crap! Congrats for finding your way here. If you want to keep the magic of stumbling into what I can only imagine is a glitch in the time space continuum alive I strongly suggest the Ryan Hotel. The service there is exactly like I've read on the other yelp reviews. A women named Jennifer went above and beyond the duties of any chain hotel front desk person. She tried ( I wouldn't let her) to come out to my car and help me with my bags, she delivered my pizza to my room and when she noticed I had no beverage she went and got me an iced water. Loved this lady. This place was not bougie... So if you're looking for fancy I'd suggest finding another place. I loved my room though. All antique fixtures and furniture. No tv with crappy channels that lead to a mindless evening! They did have internet though... and various board/card games in the lobby area. The bed was comfortable, and I had no problem sleeping through the night which is almost unheard of for me. Next time I come through here I will absolutely be staying here. Thanks guys! read more

We stayed in Wallace for a few days while biking on the famous Hiawatha and CDA trails; opted for the Ryan over the Best Western because of the great reviews. We were not disappointed - the owners have remodeled the place without detracting from the historical aesthetics of the setting. Our hosts could not have been nicer! We are giving the Ryan Hotel five stars because we will remember the place, and thus the experience, decades from now. Value that money can't buy. read more
