Ruthie's definitely lived up to the hype! We've had this place recommended to us for years, so to celebrate a big milestone, my fiancé took me here. We were able to snag a last-minute reservation on OpenTable, and the entire experience was wonderful. Our waitress was incredibly attentive--our water glasses were refilled frequently, and even when the restaurant got busy, she made sure to check on us. We were seated in a cozy, intimate circular booth on the side, which made the evening feel even more special. What I'd Order Again: Alaskan King Crab Legs - Pro tip: Order these as a side to another dish instead of as an entrée--it's much cheaper that way! The crab was incredibly fresh, thanks to their flash-freezing process, and it really hit the spot. Lobster Bisque - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I added this last-minute when our waitress mentioned that people travel just to try it, and it did not disappoint. The freshly cracked pepper, along with the truffle accents, made this so flavorful and rich. Cocktails - The drinks were fantastic! I had the Tweed Jacket cocktail and really enjoyed it. What made it even cooler was that our waitress actually created a cocktail that got added to the menu when she started working there--so cool! Scallops - Perfectly cooked with a stunning presentation. While I've had better on the coasts, I was impressed given that we're in Iowa. Desserts (HIGHLY recommend the homemade coffee ice cream & tiramisu!) - The tiramisu was amazing, and I could tell it was homemade because I nearly choked on the cocoa powder (the ultimate test!). But the real star? The homemade coffee ice cream--absolutely phenomenal. What I Wouldn't Order Again: Jumbo Crab Cake - It was good, but it had that slightly "old crab" taste and reminded me more of snow crab than the rich, sweet crab flavor I was hoping for. Given that I'm from Seattle, my seafood standards are high, so this didn't quite meet expectations. Brussels Sprouts - Great flavor, but I prefer mine extra crispy, and these weren't quite there. 10 oz Filet Mignon - It was cooked to the right temperature, but it wasn't as juicy as other steaks I've had in Iowa. Good, but not particularly memorable. Other Notes: Shareable Side Dishes - One thing I really liked was that their side dishes are all shareable, so they feel more like appetizers than traditional sides. It makes it easy to try a variety, and I definitely want to explore more of them when I come back! Location & Accessibility - Even though Ruthie's is inside a casino, it's tucked on the side, so you don't have to deal with the cigarette smell. Parking is plentiful, though depending on where you park, it might be a bit of a walk. Bathrooms - The restrooms are located outside the restaurant on the right--not too far of a walk. Final Thoughts: Ruthie's is a true gem, and I can see why it's so highly recommended. The service was outstanding, the food was top-tier, and the small details--from our cozy booth to our waitress's personal touch on the cocktail menu--made the night extra special. The 5 stars explains it all!!! Such a laid back atmosphere but yet still formal environment makes this a "go-to" place. A little out of the way most times but glad way went the extra mile tonight. I recommend this place 100%!!! The filet lollipops, for an appetizer, were amazing!!! Then came our entrees. All of us got steak and NO ONE was disappointed!!! All done to protection, the way a great steakhouse is supposed to operate. We chose to celebrate our anniversary at Ruthie's. We love going to the casino, but had never tried it. Reservations were easy, and when we arrived, we were immediately seated. Andy was our waiter, super nice, checked in but not so often that it would be annoying. We placed our drink order, then made our menu choices. Our drink was served very fast. We were the only ones in the place. Andy took our order and we visited awhile. Bread w three toppings were served, bread was delicious! Next our steaks and baked potato arrived. Andy asked us to cut into our steak and check for the correct doneness, mine was fairly red, but the other end was cooked perfectly. We then turned to our potato. Huge potatoes, served on a separate plate with butter and sour cream. The potato was underdone. And there is no way they didn't know it! My husbands arrived severed into two complete halves, he tried to stick his fork in it and it was raw and cold! Gah! Mine was sliced half way, again who ever cut into it had to know it was not cooked. Ruined the whole dinner, We ate half our steaks and a few bites of the edge of our potatoes and called it a night. We were the first couple to come into the resturant. Our server was wonderful. We both ordered the 14 oz Ribeye. We waited an hour while more people came in. Our server kept checking on us giving us water, seeing if we wanted more bread, and saying steaks that size take a little longer. I had ordered a side of shrimp and my husband ordered a side of lobster. My husband's steak was good, my steak was still bloody ( we ordered med well) . His lobster was burnt to a crisp and my shrimp was wonderful. I returned my steak and quite some time later it was returned. Better but still bloody. Server kept saying they had a new chef. We do not go out to eat very often. It was our 50th wedding anniversary and his 35th year of sobriety so it was pretty disappointing. We could take the steak home and cook it but couldn't do anything about the burnt lobster. Server gave us a free piece of cake. I guess that makes it all better - right? The steak was so wonderful it could have been sliced with a butter knife. I was actually surprised. The scallops were fabulous. I enjoyed dinner here with 11 of my golf buddies. We had rented a private room for the dinner and were not in the main restaurant which looked very elegant. Our area was extremely nice and private. We had one server who did an outstanding job throughout the evening. The martini's were perfect and the blue cheese stuffed olives were some of the best I ever had. I ordered a Caesar salad with extra anchovies and it had the perfect amount of dressing and croutons. Several of us at the table ordered the Linguini Nero and it was an outstanding dish. The pasta was delicious in the sauce and the seafood that accompanied it was fresh and tender. The only reason I did not give 5-stars was that at the end we were initially handed a single bill. Prior to booking and then prior to ordering we were told that separate bills would be provided. A truly amazing dining experience to make any celebration amazing. This year my partner and I celebrated my birthday with a succulent meal at Ruthie's. We were both impressed with the professional, attentive service given to us by Holli. She adeptly made certain we had everything we needed while still affording us the privacy we desired. My date had the delmonico ribeye beautifully prepared with giant shrimp, tomato tarragon sauce and fried spinach. I savored the Australian lobster tail with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes and clarified butter. At the bartender's suggestion, we also shared the incredible Mac and cheese. Everything was incredible!!!! Our only slight disappointment was the size and location of the bar. Arriving about 45 minutes prior to our reservation, we desired a private setting to share a drink. Finally - A steakhouse that really delivers! I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of my experience here. Sure, there are some people in t-shirts and windows looking out onto the line of people waiting in the buffet line next door. However, you don't even notice these things because you are so engulfed by delectable entrees and full-bodied beverages that nothing can keep you from enjoying the private moments you are sharing with your dining partner(s). Every member of the staff was incredibly personable and attentive, too - a must for any top notch steakhouse experience. I've been here twice, there's not much more to say than the food is average for a restaurant of this caliber, but not executed very well. Some of the menu items are severely overpriced like the Calamari, it's the same calamari you get at Applebee's, you just put a tomato sauce under it. The chicken was dry and oily, the stone fruit was mush and the rice under it was oily too. Way too much grease to even look appetizing. On Valentine's Day we got the seafood fondue and wouldn't recommend that to anyone. Some of the crab used was bad and all pieces were smaller than what you'd get at the buffet next door on crab leg night. It came with cherry tomatoes that would have been considered unusable days before, but still used on our plate. The lemon had a ton of seeds in it, I understand how nature works but if I'm paying close to $40 for an appetizer I think you can poke out the lemon seeds. They cook their steaks brilliantly, perfectly cooked and delicious. Their mashed potatoes are good but very paste like, as if they used a blender or not enough broth/butter to thin them out. I had the pork chop too, which was my favorite thing I got because of the sweet potatoes. I would recommend that over anything else. Overall, I would recommend this place for anyone who doesn't got to upscale dining a lot but not for anyone who has higher standards to accommodate the higher prices. The only bathroom is located outside of the restaurant near the casino and bistro they have next door. The bar can fit maybe 4 or 5 people by the looks of it, and the wait staff are very informal and loud while having personal non work related conversation at the front of house. I've been going here for years and never had a bad meal. The service is always impeccable and it doesn't matter who you are or how you're dressed. It's upscale, but being at a casino, lots of people show up in jeans and t shirts. Beautifully decorated with lots of room between diners for privacy with conversations. I highly recommend the pheasant cover for a starter. Tonight we had the best mushroom soup I've ever had with chunks of steak in it. We share the rack of lamb which was a perfect medium rare and the risotto with smoked gouda and sweet corn. I wasn't too sure about the corn being in it at first, but it added the perfect touch of crunch and sweetness. We finished with the raspberry cheesecake. It's not your over the counter cheesecake, but made with mascarpone. Light and very tasty. The dishes are pricey but generous and I've always shared when I've been here as there's plenty for 2 unless you're a large eater. Very nice assortment of steaks, which I've never tried....cant get past the lamb or lobster Mac and cheese. Ruthie's is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. We celebrated my birthday and 40th wedding anniversary with family making up a group of 9. The food was excellent, as usual, and the ambience lovely. Our server, Kaytlyn, was wonderful! My husband had pre-ordered 2 bottles of champagne and she expertly poured and served us. Later, she checked on us for ordering additional beverages and appetizers. Which we did. Our individual entrees were varied and my favorite was the smaller portion filet mignon, wedge salad and a family serving of mac and cheese to share. My son had crab legs, 1 pound serving and devoured it. Several had the special of the day and 2 or 3 other steaks were ordered. All were prepared to order and great.
