I love Ruth Hunts! This has been a staple in Lexington for over 100 years and I can see why. They had so many different candies to choose from and the chocolate is absolutely divine. The best chocolate being their turtles better known as "Derbies". I brought some derbies home for myself and my family- they all loved them. I have debated ordering more from their website because they are truly the best turtles I've ever had. This store also has a lot of Lexington theme souvenirs. This is now a stop on my list whenever I am in Lexington! read more

They have so many amazing Kentucky-made items! I came here because I'm putting together gift baskets of Kentucky goods. I thought I'd only find candy here, but ended up also getting hot sauce, barbecue sauce, bourbon sugar, and more. Very impressed by the selection and the staff was also very friendly. I had no idea this was so close to our house, within walking distance which can be good or bad depending on how often I go ! When I walked in I was met with the aroma of chocolate, the girl behind the counter also greeted me as well. We had a conversation about chocolates,wine and pottery. She was nice enough to give me the card for the person who makes the pottery sold at this location. I got to sample the sea salt bourbon caramel, I could have eaten another 2 or 3 ! They have a discounted section and I have to say it was definitely a good selection of items at more then fair prices. I'll be back for sure to buy some more goodies to send back home to New York and Denver. They are following the CDC guidelines, wearing masks and they have a plexiglass partition at the counter there was also hand sanitizer. read more

If you are looking for yummy treats, stop by this shop. There are a lot of delectable chocolates and other sweets. On this trip, I sampled some pumpkin fudge. It was so good, I purchased some to give as a gift. I also picked up some bargain treats, too. This was a nice store and they had a lot of gift items. I bought a box of 24 blue Monday candies. I forget that they were originated by Ruth Hunt. We love to send our friends from Hawaii gifts that are only available in Kentucky. I enjoyed the friendly staff and our shopping visit to this location. I was really not aware that this store was at this location since they have a store in Mount Sterling Kentucky. We will be visiting again. Thanks again! read more

Sweet Elite Halloween Treats! With Halloween coming up this weekend, Heather P., our fearless Community Manager, planned the perfect Elite event--a chance to experience our local, adorable Ruth Hut Candies (and it's much more than candy!). Due to Covid restrictions that Yelp has imposed on its events, rather than gather together as Elites, we were given the opportunity to stop in at our convenience this week. The friendly staff there was available to answer any questions and I had a few about the current location and history of the company. Ruth Tharpe Hunt started making candies out of her house in Mount Sterling in 1921, eventually building up the business enough to warrant moving the candy making operation to a small dedicated factory on Main Street. The company has remained in business since its inception and even moved into a larger factory complex in 1991. They have two main stores, one in Mount Sterling and the Lexington store on Walton Avenue. And of course, their products are widely available in retail venues all over the region. I know we sold a blue million Blue Mondays during my years at Joseph-Beth Booksellers! Anyway, back to the Walton Avenue location, what a beautiful shop! They have large showcase cabinets of their candies that also serve as their cash register area. When not otherwise engaged, the staff is busy boxing up candies for their displays throughout the store and also handling mail out orders. In fact, I bet they have a brisk mail order business, as it's the perfect store for gathering a bunch of candy/Kentucky/UK themed items to send to homesick Kentuckians around the country and across the world. Wandering around the place, I was struck by all of the non-candy items they offer--things like Kentucky themed coffee table books, recipe books, travel guides, stuffed gift animals, local food items like hot sauces and bbq sauces. They even have several areas dedicated to UK gift items and clothing! I was offered the chance to taste something if I wanted to and zeroed right in on the salted caramels! Absolutely delicious and now I've got a stash here at home to enjoy! I'll definitely be back soon! Check em out! I have lived in/around Kenwick no less than three times in the last 13 years, and I'd never set foot in this store! Shame on me, because it's much more than a chocolate shop; not only do they have tons of sweet treats to choose from, but also gifts GALORE and a post office! I wonder how long that's been there... The employees could not be more friendly or accommodating, and one even invited me to briefly lower my mask so I could sample the pumpkin fudge that they cannot keep in stock. And now I know why! I ended up snagging a Hot Maple Toddy Candleberry and some bourbon balls for the road, but I will be back for birthday, special occasion, and holiday shopping! read more

As ridiculous as it might seem, this review is primarily for the US Post Office located inside the shop. They have ALL the cool stamps and rarely, if ever, have a line or a wait. If that wasn't enough to excite you, let's talk about their hours - they are open seven days a week! And for the people in the back, yes that includes Sunday. Magical. And finally, you can reward yourself with a piece of candy (or four) for making it to the post office like a real damn adult. Congrats! read more

My husband and I were recently blessed to be on the receiving end of an amazing gift basket from Ruth Hunt, courtesy of a dear cyber friend. Not only was it so wonderful to receive so many prayers and gifts while both my husband and I were fighting a particularly severe case of Covid-19 back in March, to have this one arrive now that we are back home and recovering was such a nice surprise. During those terribly uncertain days when we felt so alone, a friend contacted me and told me she was sending a gift direct from Ruth Hunt. It arrived tonight and oh my-- what a wonderful basket of goodies! I knew the quality of Ruth Hunt chocolates but I didn't even know they offered so many other great products. There was fudge, and the soft and perfect melt in your mouth Blue Mondays. And special note: take a bite of that chocolatey Blue Monday and then a piece or two of the salty crunchy snack and oh my goodness - that juxtaposition equals snack heaven for your mouth. Add to that Ale 8 Salsa, grape jelly, mallow caramels, old fashioned stick candy, fudge, and a wonderful blackberry candle and you have one great gift basket! Oh, and I can't forget the Distiller's Mash Biscuit Mix! All in all is was a most delicious and unexpected treat from a dear and very thoughtful friend-- and it was made with products from a company with a long respected reputation for making yummy things, and this did not disappoint. So disappointed about this place. Website said they were open and so we went when we were on vacation. We got there and they were closed. The windows were decorated with all their candy concoctions but no one was inside lights out and doors locked. Very disappointed don't recommend if they can't practice good business sense. read more

My mother is a native Kentuckian. Being raised here she knew of cream candy and whenever we would come to visit her family, she would stock up on a few bags for the trip back home. Now fast forward a few decades and I'm an hour from the home of this candy and was thrilled to be able to stop in and buy up some for both myself and my mother. It's still as creamy and yummy as we both remember! If you cannot make it to the store, they do have mail order which came in handy during the holidays. I'm going on and on about the cream candy but equal billing of fabulous flavor goes to their bourbon balls! If you have been to Woodford and had their bonbons, then most likely they were made by Ruth's! Seriously, you cannot go wrong with these candies. A true Kentucky treasure! read more

I visited this store for a Yelp event and was treated to a nice sampler of their products. As a Lexington native, the candy inside wasn't new to me, but it reminded me of some treats I hadn't had in a while. I've been sneaking bourbon balls since I was a kid, and theirs are the ones I usually buy. The Blue Monday and candy stick were also good. I can't wait to try the coffee in the morning and hang the scented car tag in my car. I have some gift ideas now. Yes, the chocolates are glorious, however, this RH also has a post office, which is so much more pleasing in every way than going to a typical government post office. I first tasted a Ruth Hunt malted milk ball while I was on a horse farm tour. It was the most delicious piece of candy I'd ever put in my mouth. Someone told me that the factory wasn't far from Lexington so I soon as I left I called and they offered to give me a tour the next morning. I showed up in the candy shop in Mount Sterling and was immediately helped. Stephanie took me on a tour of the unique facility. She was wonderful, but honestly all of the people working and running the candymaking factory were as sweet as the candy coming off the conveyor belt. I was fortunate enough to witness the cook, Junior, making Blue Monday bars. I am so glad that I took the time to reach out to this amazing company and will now order all of my sweets from now on from Ruth Hunt candy in Kentucky. This place is a treasure on earth. It is clean as a whistle and painted cheerful colors. All the displays are set up so cute. My son is in the horse business and several times I have bought a giant chocolate horse to take to his barn. The workers who wait on you are all helpful and friendly. I always thought the world of this place. So much, that I made the mistake of trusting them to get a package shipped out to a dear friend. I was skeptical of their Authorized Mailing center status, but I decided that I would take a chance because they've been so well respected in our neighborhood. The lady that helped me assured me that the package was labeled correctly, but when the box arrived at my home by the estimated shipping date, she took no accountability and blamed myself for mislabeling and the post office for their shipping errors. Not was their no accountability, but their was no sensitivity or willingness to hep resolve the issue. SKIP THIS LOCATION ALTOGETHER! If you need to mail something, go to the post office. If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, take the trip to Mount Sterling and save yourself the headache of dealing with the incompetence and insensitivity that fuels this location. read more
