I love this shop. It's everything you could want in a small chocolate shop. The delicious smells hit you as soon as you open that door. You can try samples if you are unsure if you might like something. I love ordering truffles. My favorite are the milk chocolate truffle and the milk chocolate peanut butter truffles. They also have these delightful items called Thoroughbreds. They have a few varieties of these but my favorite is the pecan with milk chocolate. The service has always been pleasant and helpful if you are stuck on what to order. Be warned that once you visit this delightful shop, other candy places just won't measure up! read more

The creations at Old Kentucky Chocolates live up to their price point most of the time. The grapes, chips and thoroughbreds are our favorites, and we get chocolate coins every Christmas. The disposition of the staff is hit or miss; some people seem genuinely happy to help us and pleasant, while others seem like they wish we would get out so they don't have to deal with us. I found myself here after my mom sent me a picture of one of her Valentine's day gifts. They have chocolate-covered grapes and naturally, I just had to try something like that. By all accounts, this place is 5 stars. The only reason I'm taking off two stars is for the price, but I'll touch on that in a minute. To get this out of the way first... chocolate-covered grapes are fantastic! I want them any time I can have them. To get something else out of the way... after quickly demolishing the box I bought, I decided to try my hand at making them. Much like chocolate-covered strawberries, I tried the same method while putting them in the refrigerator for a few hours and created chocolate-covered grapes. Maybe they weren't exactly the same but for under 10 dollars, more of these can be made on your own. It's great that I can make these on my own because when a small box of the grapes(as of 02/20) is 10.50 and the larger boxes are 20... ummm...yea-nope. They cover everything in chocolate here. I wanted to buy some of the chocolate covered potato chips but again... the portion for the price was a dealbreaker. I think the highlight for me with this store is the chocolate case. There are numerous chocolates just like with any candy store. They are sold individually so you just get whatever you want. Unfortunately, most of the things in the case also are on the expensive side. The majority of things on that particular day ranged from 70 cents to a buck. I ended up with 6 pieces of 85 cents/per piece and a few modjeskas. The candy was delicious. I had chocolate-covered lemon jellies and chocolate-covered orange jellies. They were both perfect. They have plenty of space. It doesn't really feel like an old-timey-wimey candy store since it's in a nicer strip mall area. The variety is there and all of their products that I've tried are tasty. The price factor is what will keep me away from here. You just aren't going to get the most for your money at this shop. read more

Beautiful place with so many chocolate and candy options. Staff is always super friendly. I went with a horse head shaped cutting board, vanilla chocolate caramels and bourbon balls for a gift. I always buy the chocolate covered grapes for myself and they're so amazing and priced reasonably! The only downside, with the new renovations, there's a lot less non-perishable gifts to choose from; their focus is on chocolate, so I understand. Stopped into Old Kentucky Chocolates today to get some candy for my grandmother. She's coming into town soon and has a major sweet tooth (apple doesn't fall far from the tree). With Derby coming up, OKC has a lot of great seasonal candy out. After perusing the store & deciding what she'd like best, I bought some derby mints, bourbon truffles, buckeyes, and a few candy bars- although you really can't go wrong with anything here! The chocolate really is like no other. The store is run by great people who are always so friendly. There is a sample table by the register with a few chocolate varieties - always worth checking out :) My other favorites here are the chocolate covered rice krispies and chocolate dipped grapes! read more

Old Kentucky Chocolates is amazing! Everything in the entire shop is great. If you are looking for a place to purchase candy, or if you're looking to try something new, or if you're looking for gifts, this is the spot to go. You seriously cannot go wrong with anything you would get from this place. But, remember this when you go: CHOCOLATE. COVERED. GRAPES. That's right. You'll forget all about strawberries (though they have those too) once you try these babies. I never thought fruit (ok, ok.. fruit covered in delicious chocolate) would be one of my favorite desserts ever! I had never even heard of chocolate covered grapes until my cousin introduced me to these, and now I'm obsessed with them. Every time I'm in Lexington I stop and pick up a large box. I can't even wait to get home to eat them, I sit them in the seat next to me on my drive home and eat them in the car. That's how good they are! If you can get past the grapes there's tons of other delicious stuff to check out as well. And they have a tasting area in the front of the store so you can sample and see what you like. Still a fan, 3 years later, after my first review of the product of this business. So apparently a coworker of mine was selling these bars for $1 to raise money for a high school lacrosse team. I decided to get $5 in these bars and I actually gave away like three of them. I never had a chance to try the blue wrapper one (no one is probably going to know what I am writing about because there could be several varieties with blue wrappers); however, I did try the brown wrapper (in fact, both of the ones I was left with were the brown wrapper ones). Note to self: Never give people the choice of bars when you do not have enough to set aside for yourself to try. Anyway......so I try the brown wrapper one and it just so happens that it is of the "pure milk chocolate with crispy rice" variety. It reminded me of those Nestle crunch bars. I am going to see today if she is still selling them and I will get a blue wrapper one and report back. *I am actually surprised I did not indicate what kind of chocolate variety bar I had sampled way back in 2016. Why am I missing those details? Curious minds inquire. O_o read more

Why 5 stars? Because Cheryl could not have been a better tour guide. --- --- --- Apologies if I spelled Cheryl incorrectly, by the way! Heather P and I took a tour of this chocolate factory, and I really had no idea what to expect. After it was over with, I was so glad we did this! Cheryl was the sweetest person I think I've ever encountered. She knew her stuff, and was very generous with the samples. The whole time we were on the tour, I had three thoughts: 1) Why is this free? 2) Why aren't there 100 people lining up to do this? 3) Listening to Cheryl describe the chocolate-making process was like a lullaby. And I don't mean in a boring way. It was so peaceful and pleasant, that I just wanted to curl up in a blanket on the floor and have her explain the difference between bourbon truffles, while I close my eyes and imagine I'm an 8 year old living at Willy Wonka's house. Is that weird? This tour being complementary is pure genius. After taking part, all I want to do is visit here and max out my credit card on chocolates every time I visit Lexington from here on out. We "forced ourselves " to stop at Kentucky chocolates on a lazy Sunday afternoon. What a spread! There were beautiful boxes of candy (from sampler to hefty), as well as assorted seasonal molds (like Easter bunnies, etc.) & other types of candy. What makes this place so special is that you are allowed an unlimited amount of samples! The variety is plentiful. The cashier did not even give me "the hairy eyeball" when I kept returning to the samples; I must have tried just about every single type! We left with a huge assortment of singles, samplers and bourbon balls. The "Moonshine" bourbon balls are strong and incredibly yummy. The cherry cordials are also incredible; you'll never buy a cheap box of cherry cordials again. read more

I remember when this location used to be my neighborhood video store. Yeah, that was years ago... and even though Old KY Chocolates has been around for many years, I haven't and neither has this location. I too read Susie's review a year or so ago of this place has been on my radar ever since. Last week, I was searching for Valentine's Day candy and wanted a local experience that tourists like, so I found myself here on a Saturday afternoon. I was surprised to see it so busy. There was a long line of people at the register when I first walked in. I walked around with the initial plan of just window shopping, yeah right... the plan seemed good. I ended up spending over $30. I bought candy sticks, sugar free candy, white chocolate dipped pretzels, dog bones and Oreos. For the record, the only thing that I got for myself were the candy sticks, you know the ones that I used to get as a kid for like a nickle each. After I checked out, I notice the "free sampling" area. Everything available to sample were things that you probably wouldn't try without first sampling, things like chocolate dipped potato chips and chocolate dipped grapes. They got me again, I bought a half pound box of the chocolate covered grapes... for my daughter, not for myself. They usually have tours, but they told me that a machine is down, so the tours won't start back up until March... I assume that will depend on whether or not the machine is fixed though. After I left there, I kid you not, I went grocery shopping straight across the street at Good Foods Coop... I guess the guilt of sampling one too many chocolate covered grapes got to me. read more

The best chocolates ever! I discovered Old KY chocolates while on business about 14yrs ago. I continue to stop by and pick things up or I have them shipped home to St. Louis. The bourbon cherries are the absolute BOMB. Oh, my goodness. I was given my first one on a tour 14yrs ago and I was set. I must have bourbon cherries. I began flying home with boxes loaded in my suitcase for friends at work who also discovered them. My folks would place an order with me prior to holidays. One of my trips included 22boxes of bourbon cherries. I have also loved the bourbon truffles and oh the Derby mints are to die for. All the chocolate that I have tried has been a hit. Great ladies who man the counter and are free to provide samples. The Chocolate covered strawberries are amazing along with the covered grapes. My other favorite is mojeski's which is a caramel covered marshmallow. Oh, my goodness. Love those. The prices are not cheap but for good quality chocolate I am willing to pay. read more

My mom sent me these for my birthday... They arrived at my office in a cooler with ice that had just started to cool. They REALLY made me want to break my diet protocol, especially since I let a friend try one and the look of delicious heaven on his face killed me (given I'd only had dry toast and an apple so far all day). However, I'm hard core with this diet, so I resisted these, rewrapped the crap out of the box I had opened (one of two, she sent Old Kentucky Bourbon Truffles, and OK Bourbon Chocolates) and put both boxes in my freezer, where they would live for the next three weeks.... So I have been to the downtown location, but never the Southland location. It is much bigger of course, but I also love the people who work here. I felt like I was at home, surrounded by chocolate. My coworker sent me here to pick up some chocolate for a fundraiser they were doing, and why did she send me into the chocolate store? What kind of friend is she? I went crazy! They have a large variety of dark chocolate candies, which is my jam! Most places don't have dark chocolate on the forefront like they do. Love this shop - the very best place to get bourbon balls and derby mints. Love that they have mini gift boxes (4 chocolates per box) which are so perfect for party favors, corporate gifts, stocking stuffers, etc. And their prices are so reasonable! It was almost a year ago that I read Susie L.'s review of Old Kentucky Chocolates. I've pretty much never met a piece of chocolate I haven't liked, lower end stuff excepted, so I was intrigued. But I tend not to act quickly on these things and it took me a while to order a one pound box of Dark Chocolate Derby Mints. And once I did, maybe last month, it took me a week or two to open them once they arrived. Today was the day. After lunch I removed the plastic wrap from the box which had been sitting on my kitchen counter and was treated to the smell of mint and chocolate. I had one w/ a cup of tea. It was smooth and lovely. They don't have nutritional information on the bottom of the box, so I'm not sure what they consider a portion, but one seemed sufficient. After the first one I wanted a second, but restrained myself, as I like to draw out the pleasure. I look forward to the next one tomorrow. It was excellent quality and I'm glad I acted on the impulse to buy them, even though it took me a while. Thanks, Susie! read more

The sample table here is loaded with goodies, but the two stand-out items are the chocolate covered grapes and the chocolate covered potato chips. I know chocolate covered grapes sound nasty, but they are so good - the grapes are so refreshingly cold and juicy, and its a great contrast to the chocolate. And for chocolate covered potato chips... If you like chocolate covered pretzels (and really, who doesn't?) this is a much, much better version of that. read more

All excited to take my 4yr old nanny charge on the Old KY Chocolates tour. Had to schedule last Tues, they were booked til today. So, I gave my name, number and whatever else she needed to reserve a spot. We arrive 5-10 min early, paid the fee, and walked around while we waited for it to start. At 10:20a they decide the "other large groups" weren't coming and those of us who showed on time could start. Yay! We're given a brief history rundown outside the kitchen doors, 4yr old's eyes are glazing over, he's pretty much over it. Finally, we go into the kitchen! Woo hoo!!! However, nothing is cooking, nothing is getting covered in chocolate or even on a conveyor belt. We did see 3 piles of nuts and caramel slab on a table behind some metal cookware. I could see it but my kiddo had to tilt his head just right, to see through the pots at the caramel laying there, just being caramel. We moved our focus (not our feet) to the pull taffy machine and what the taffy looks and feels like. But, the machine was off. The tables were clear of ingredients, the pots for making all of their tasty product were clean and dry. Finally, I asked if we're going to actually see any of the cooking or machines in action. "No, not today", we were told. "They haven't started on anything this early". So, I said that's actually what we came to see so we'd like to come back another day. We walked out and I asked the ladies at the register why the machines aren't on? One said she didn't know and the other said, "we don't know, they're not always on". I asked if I could call before coming next time to ensure we get to see the chocolate being made. I was told "No, we never know, it just depends on the day". So, I got my money back. I wasn't getting any information that would encourage me to come back. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, HUGE disappointment. Can't imagine a school group or the other supposed "large groups" arriving and being crammed into an area to see all the nothing that was going on. At the very least, during any of the 20 min we waited for no one to arrive, it could've been mentioned that it was a slow day and nothing would be seen in action. Additionally, call the people that we waited for because large groups would surely have to provide a number just like I did. I was ready to get a few small gifts but put everything back after carrying them around for 15min. Luckily, I was with a child who is as easy as they come and wasn't bothered because he was bored. read more

I love this place! I'm a chocoholic and I can always get my fix here. The stores have been re-organized due to the recent change in ownership. I've always loved it but honestly it's even better now. Same great candies just more visible and accessible. I do most of my shopping at the Tate's Creek location and the ladies there all know me and are just great! They've helped me when I needed custom items. It's an icon in our community and I hope it's around for many years to come. Now that the new location in Hamburg has opened I plan on buying a bigger size pant! read more

Hard to go wrong with a place dedicated to chocolate. I've had several items from here over the years, and all have been high quality a d delicious. Their focus is on chocolate, obviously, but they also sell a few other types of treats. Their nuts are particularly good. They have fresh chocolate covered strawberries some days, and fresh chocolate covered grapes on others (only place I know of that does chocolate grapes, but they are excellent). If you're seeking one over the other, might want to check in to make sure it's the right day or you will be dissapointed. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because it is a tad pricey, but then again it is all very high quality, so perhaps that should be expected. read more

Ok, I give this a five based mostly on one of their chocolates: the Black Forest Truffle. Everything else was just "cute" or "ok", generally chocolate, in other words. But the Black Forest Truffle is BOURBON. They say it's cherries and bourbon smashed together with chocolate in a chocolate coating, but I guarantee you, you will taste chocolate and bourbon when you eat it. read more

I stopped in the day before Valentine's Day to buy my boyfriend some chocolates. This place was unsurprisingly packed! I looked around for a while and then went to the front for samples. The girls at the front counter were very friendly. I sampled a chocolate covered strawberry, chocolate covered grape, and chocolate covered potato chip. I decided on a pound of chocolate covered potato chips for $15.95. I thought that was a fun gift for a guy. Great local chocolate place with a wide variety of options.
