My wife bought the Groupon for me as a Christmas gift, and we just went today. I thought it was a lot of fun. As others have said, the track is really short, so you don't get up a lot of speed before you have to slow for the turns. But it is pretty unique to get to experience driving a real race car - engines are very loud (500hp), smell of fuel and rubber, just like a real nascar race, but as seen and felt from the driver's seat...not something you get to experience every day.
I didn't have any issues with timeliness. My appointment was for 1pm. They did the safety class, which as others have said, is really good and gives you all the information you need to be safe. That took about 30 minutes. Then we suited up and staged to get into our cars. That was probably another 20 minutes or so. I waited in the car for about 10 minutes while the prior group finished up on the track, then I was off. I was the first of 3 cars on the track, so did a couple of initial laps while the others entered, then did my 10 lap package. We were out by about 2:30pm, so an hour and a half total.
Some people have commented on the very controlled nature of the experience. It definitely was, which is a great thing for safety. You have a radio in your helmet, over which you hear a track boss giving you and others information about what's going on, whether you can step on it or should go slower, etc. I liked that because neither I nor any of the other people on the track were professional race car drivers, so having someone watching and making sure you don't mess up...or more of my concern, some other person doesn't put me at risk, was a big comfort. You're allowed to pass, but only with permission from the track boss, and it's all announced to everyone over the audio so everyone knows what's going on. There are no mirrors in race cars, and you're in a safety cage, so really can't see a lot around you. So again, when you're not racing around a bunch of professionals, you'd better have someone watching over things! I was in car 21 and it drove just fine, with no issues.
The staff were very nice and professional. One of the staff members who was helping near the track entrance even noticed my daughter filming from the stands with her iPad and he called her over and took it and filmed a couple of laps from his much closer-up vantage point...which was totally unsolicited and cool of him to do.
My wife purchased the insurance when she signed up. Didn't seem necessary after the fact, as it really was pretty safe...but insurance never is necessary until you need it. I'm sure anyone who's ever wrecked one of their cars was glad they bought it, or wished they had. She also purchased the photo plaque, which is actually pretty nice. We didn't purchase the video.
I didn't do the ride-along with the professional driver, which in retrospect, would have given me the advantage of knowing what the cars are capable of before I drove myself. That would have been nice, as I'm not sure whether I was driving just on the edge of the limit, or if the car could have handled twice the speed around the turns. It's a bit of an up-charge to do that, though, so I guess the value would depend on just how important it is to you to know you pushed the car to the limit.
All-told, a very fun experience! read more
