Colonial Hotel - "Spring Rolls" with white Jasmine rice

    Colonial Hotel

I have always loved the Colonial. Years ago it was mostly a bar with just bar food. The previous…read moreowner transformed it into a restaurant with a bar instead of a bar with some food. She had the best burgers and dinners. The prime rib was a little salty once but the food was always amazing. The current owners are keeping the same trend. They have added an Asian fusion to it. Now with that being said I had to learn that their spring rolls were more like Lumpia than a spring roll. I have had spring rolls with bits of meat in them and these are mostly minced meat with bits of seasoning wrapped in the thin flour wrap. The taste was good just not what I was expecting. They looked a little burnt but I couldn't tase any burned taste. We also got Orange Chicken and boneless Buffalo Wings (buffalo chicken nuggets). They tasted good and were cooked well. The orange chicken sauce had a little aftertaste that I didn't expect. Can't say it was bad just unexpected. The buffalo chicken was good I forgot to ask for blue cheese but I had some so it was all good. I will eat here again. And will most likely have a burger or steak.

The (apparently) front door leads you to the bottom of the stairs leading to the apartments upstairs. Guess it's not a hotel anymore. I tried an unmarked door off that foyer and Bingo! I'm looking at the bar and then see a few numbered tables. Looks like we walked in on Trivia Night. Done with my rant. The service was great, the Trivia regulars were a nice bunch and the food was good. All this place needs is some LGBTQ to make it dazzle.

Room was dust central, dust had settled everywhere and even after us wiping it off with some baby wipes it would re settle. Under the bed was filthy with dirt and dust looked like it had been forgotten about by the cleaner.

Clean, convenient, friendly - and perhaps the only Hampton Inn I've stayed at where *everything* in the bathroom worked like it's supposed to. I've been keeping a mental list of bathroom flaws at Hampton Inns: Sink drains slowly, no stopper in sink, sink stopper pull doesn't work, faucet handle is loose, water is scalding hot except for at extreme 'Cold' travel of knob, sink water pressure is low, sink water pressure is ok but shower water pressure is barely a trickle, shower drains slowly, toilet paper holder is loose, et cetera --- except for the Hampton Inn in Corning-Painted Post, where everything worked as it should! Hurray! The breakfast area was clean and well-tended. Apparently HI has done away with the free cookies they used to have. Didn't see any during my recent vacation.

The grounds are well manicured. The bed was comfortable and the pillows are plentiful. The location cannot be beat. We had dinner and drinks at the Blue Pointe Grille the night we arrived. I was a little hesitant to eat at the hotel restaurant. I was bracing to be disappointed. Service was on point and cocktails were well made. Food was delicious. We had a high top in the bar right near a window for a nice view of the lake. Highly recommend.

It's rare that I'm dazzled by a hotel or feel that it's worth the money (they're all stupid…read moreexpensive these days), but Harbor Hotel was a wonderful experience I'd recommend to anyone. Don't get me wrong, it's expensive. But for once I felt like I'd gotten my money's worth! Everything everywhere was meticulously clean and well-kept. Our room was spacious and bright, with a private balcony and chairs, a couch and coffee table, and a full table that allowed us to take comfortable advantage of the room service breakfast. Potpourri sachets in the closet, free water bottles in the lobby, free coffee stations on each floor, and chocolates every night on the pillows--details, people! We also enjoyed the indoor pool and hot tub, and of course the gorgeous patio and firepits overlooking the lake which was 80% of the reason we booked here. All of the staff we encountered, from the front desk to the housekeepers, were very friendly. I did think it was a little strange that the fitness center was in a whole different building and you have to walk across the parking lot to get to it, but hey--you get your steps in. The hotel is also very centrally located. On the water, of course, but next door to Seneca Harbor Station from which you can book lake cruises. It's also less than a mile from the entrance to Watkins Glen State Park and hiking trails and only a 5-10 minute walk from most restaurants. We did most things on foot. When you do get back in the car, there are multiple wineries within a 15-minute drive. The only problem the whole visit was the hotel internet, which was terrible every day. You could make do in the daytime, but at night, when everyone was back in their rooms after the day out exploring, it was slow to the point of unusable, and I ended up turning on my data hotspot to even be able to check my email. I would not suggest bringing time-sensitive work with you, and you should not expect to be able to stream videos on your devices. Just disconnect, you'll be less frustrated. There is an onsite restaurant and bar, and while it's nothing mind-blowing, it is a nice option to have (and is one of the few "higher end" type places in Watkins Glen). Menu includes a few of the standard local wines, which was nice!
