Not sure how I missed this place. I've been in Carlisle for 3 years and had my first experience at the Tavern. Clearly it is a crowd favorite as it was very crowded. They started us off with what most restaurants provide...rolls. These rolls were not special at all and tasted akin to what one would buy at the local grocery store. I suggest you skip these useless carbs. I was also not overwhelmed with the very berry lemonade. This alcoholic beverage was indeed very berry, but seemed to have very little liquor in it. I ordered a regular lemonade next since this wasn't worth it. For my meal I ordered what they proclaimed to be award winning crab cakes. These were actually pretty good. I enjoyed the texture and flavor, but they would have been excellent had I received some remoulade drizzled on top or even on the side. They provided some tartar sauce on the side but I'm not a fan of that, so what could have been great ended up as pretty good instead. I also enjoyed the baked sweet potato with the brown sugar. Don't let the appearance fool you, the staff is top notch as well as the food!! You never leave there hungry, always taking home to go boxes for 2 more days if your a moderate eater. This place was fantastic. Our waitress was friendly and attentive even though it was the dinner rush and the place was packed. I ordered a Sam Adams on tap and it was delicious. First off we went there and the parking lot was packed. We walked in and was seated immediately. The place is huge inside. Went to the tavern with two others couples for dinner. I had a seafood pasta dish, which was good and the others had ribs, crab and a mushroom dish that they said was good. However two in the party ordered NY strip steak - one was done nice, the other was nothing but fat. It's hard to believe they were the same cut of steak. It was a bit disappointing to say the least. The server was nice and did a nice job. The prices are okay for what you get. The one big downfall is the noise. It was so loud that you couldn't hear the folks sitting at the same table with you. People need to learn to talk with indoor voices so that the entire restaurant doesn't have to listen to their conversations, and you can actually talk with those sitting at the same table. read more

We found this charming place off the beaten path while driving on Newville Road in Carlisle. It didn't look like much from the outside and normally I would drive on by places like this, except my wife was curious to try it. So, I pulled over and checked reviews and to my surprise, it had a lot of favorable ones. So, we decided to check them out for lunch. After walking inside, we were seated next to a fireplace. The place is somewhat cozy with a dining area and a bar. My wife ordered the 1/2 lb of wings and mild BBQ sauce for $8.99 and said they were very good. I had the Deluxe Cheese Burger with lettuce, tomato and sauteed onions for $9.99, along with A1 sauce on the side. It was very delicious! The burger was made to my liking and lightly seasoned. Had to let this one resinate for a while. But this was one of the worst dining experiences we've had in years! If it wasn't for this place having sentimental value to a late family member. I'd be much harsher. The flies/bugs in the cocktails were a nice touch. Each order of the same cocktail were made diffidently or had different ratios of contents. Interesting stuff. The cake cakes were an abomination with no or very little crab. All filer. We should have known better to order cake cakes with crab being out of season. But nothing "award winning" about the crab cakes. They used salted butter or a butter substitute for the seafood mixed grilled and the scollops/seafood were borderline inedible. Now the prime rib did look good and was a healthy portion. So there's that. For the price of seafood and beef in todays market, This place is a no fly zone and we will not be returning. Rustic Tavern is usually busy most lunch times the parking lot seems full. However the Rustic Taverns is not the place for a small group reception. Our group of about 50 had the rear end of the dining room with just a divider so all the noise from the front of restaurant came through so difficult to hear when we had a speaker talk. For 3 tables of 10 and 1 table of 14, there were only TWO servers, and no bus boy. Each serve had two tables. They were great and worked their buns off but this was not fair to them or the customers. Food came out based on the order, not getting the food to each table. Food delivery took so long some people got their meal others had to wait more than 5 minutes on both tables. The food was good although some went cold as some of us waited for rest of table to receive their plate, and plentiful, the desserts were very good. Their house dressing could use little more acid, perhaps a splash of balsamic vinegar. I realize restaurants are having a tough time finding servers but it is not right to take the business if you can not feed them in a timely manner. The meal took about 2 5 hours. If you do book a group then negotiate how many servers for the size of your group. read more

I'm going to title this review.as " if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it must be a duck" My husband and I entered the restaurant which was nearly empty and I was asked if we had a reservation. My answer was no we had not made a reservation! I was then told the restaurant would be full in about 40 minutes for guests that had previously made reservations. In 40 minutes we could have been served and on our way. I must admit there were no people of color present. I was humiliated and hurt and felt we were not welcome because of our color of our skin we are Afro-American. Shame shame on the management and the woman that said I was rude because I made the remark that this felt biased based on race. I hope that she considers how hurtful the experience was for us. We came on a Saturday at 3:30 in the afternoon, in the middle of January. The restaurant was just about empty but for two tables. We were met with "Do you have a reservation?" No. "There's going to be at least an hour wait." Huh? It's 3:30 in the afternoon and there are only TWO tables being served. "You can sit at the bar." Now, this exact scenario happened once before when we tried to eat here about a year and a half before. We are from out of state and there was an event going on in town at that time. We blamed it on the event. We figured we'd try this place once more when no event was going on. I was shocked that we were met with the same thing. Normally, I would have left, but out of curiosity, we went off to the bar. I hate sitting at a bar, but I wanted to see how this played out. Fortunately, at that time, it wasn't busy at the bar, but it got a bit busy while we were there. We were there for one hour. Our bill was 175. We ordered appetizers and a couple of drinks. The food was good. The bartender was great. She was friendly and efficient and the drinks were good. During the hour that we were there, we watched 8 parties walk in and turn back around and walk out of the bar entrance. They were a mix of 2 to 4 people in each party. We didn't see how many groups came through the restaurant entrance. Now, if each party averaged 175. Each, they let about $1400 walk out the door in one hour, while tables sat empty. Do that every weekend over the course of the year and that's a huge loss. At 4:30, when we left, I poked my head into the main restaurant and only 3 more tables had been sat. The remaining tables were still empty. I don't know if this is restaurant policy or employees, but this kind of arrogance astounds me. The food is good, but it's not that good. Quaint local establishment serving good food and drink. My wife and I just got into town after a long drive and tried Rustic Tavern based on the good reviews. Although it was very busy we were able to get a nice seat in the bar area after a minor wait (we could've been seated in the dining room right away). My wife enjoyed the fish tacos which she described as "delicious". I had the crab cakes based on the good reviews. While they were also delicious and loaded with lump crab meat, I did find them a little dry. Our server, Meghan, should have an "S" on her chest. She was hopping all night but didn't leave anyone waiting; she was amazing. I'd definitely return, but likely get my crab cakes in Maryland from now on. read more

Quite a generous serving, hot and fresh. The crab cakes were perfectly seasoned and you could taste the back fin crabmeat without a ton of filler. Even the lettuce and tomato was super fresh.
