TRICK OR TREAT! Except this time, there's WINE!…read more
As a 40-something adult who still thoroughly enjoys Halloween, I'm always looking for fun ways to celebrate spooky season that don't involve borrowing someone's children to go trick-or-treating. So when I stumbled across TWO Halloween events at The Vineyard at Hershey on social media, Adult Trick or Treat AND Trick or Treat Wine Flights, happening at the same place on the same day, I figured the Universe was trying to tell me something. Challenge accepted!
I dug out my bank robber costume, purchased tickets for both experiences through Eventbrite and headed off on my Halloween adventure! The wine flight cost $24.46 in advance versus $25 at the event, and Adult Trick or Treat was $27.63 in advance. Just over $52 for an afternoon of Halloween fun? Seemed reasonable to me!
I arrived around 12:30pm on a gorgeous October afternoon. It was about 65°, the sun was shining and the fall colors were beautiful! Parking was plentiful, but figuring out where to go was a bit of an adventure itself. Signage could've been better for first-time visitors. After investigating several locked doors, I eventually discovered that my wine flight was being served at an outdoor bar that looked a bit like a beer hut.
The staff member was super friendly, and since I'd purchased my ticket ahead of time, getting my flight was quick and easy. A few minutes later, I was handed a tray with FIVE wines and a mystery bag of candy. HALLOWEEN FOR GROWN-UPS!
I found a sunny table outside and got down to the very serious business of pairing wine with Halloween candy. Five different wines, five different candies and absolutely no need to walk around the neighborhood knocking on strangers' doors. THIS is how trick-or-treating should work at my age!
My favorite pairing was the Twisted Kiss wine with a Hershey's Cookies 'n' Creme bar. And here's the funny part. I am NOT a Cookies 'n' Creme person. Never have been. But paired with that wine?! OH MY! It completely changed the experience! I didn't finish all the candy, but I can assure you that not a drop of wine went to waste!
At 1:30pm, it was time for the second half of my visit: ADULT TRICK OR TREAT!
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I was dressed as a bank robber and ready to collect some loot! We were given cards to complete by visiting five Halloween-themed game stations scattered around the property: Find the Eyeball, Eyeball Race, Ring Toss, Skull Pong and Who Am I?
Four stations were easy to complete solo, which I appreciated as someone who frequently adventures alone. The final station, Who Am I?, required a team effort, kind of like Guess Who. Fortunately, by that point I'd made some new friends along the way, so we teamed up and had a great time playing a couple of rounds together.
And THAT is one of my favorite things about solo adventuring. You show up somewhere by yourself, dressed as a bank robber, and somehow end up making friends while playing Halloween games. Life is weird and wonderful!
With our cards completed, we headed to the patio bar to collect our prizes. Each of us received a little trick-or-treat bag filled with candy and Halloween trinkets. Was I ridiculously excited about receiving a bag of Halloween goodies as a grown woman? ABSOLUTELY!
PRO TIP: Adult Trick or Treat is for ages 21 and older, requires a valid ID and takes place outside on grassy areas, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
After finishing my Halloween festivities, I wandered down to the dock overlooking the pond. And I'm SO glad I did! The autumn leaves were gorgeous, reflecting in the water beneath the afternoon sunshine. I sat there for a while, listening to the live music drifting across the property and simply enjoying the beautiful October day.
It was one of those unexpected little moments when you realize that you don't need to be doing anything else. You're exactly where you want to be, doing exactly what you want to do.
What a perfect way to spend Halloween.
Kudos to The Vineyard at Hershey for putting together TWO fantastic adult Halloween experiences! The wine and candy pairings were creative and delicious, the trick-or-treat games were genuinely fun, the staff were friendly and the entire afternoon gave this 40-something solo adventurer a chance to celebrate Halloween without feeling like I needed to borrow a kid to participate.
I'll absolutely be keeping The Vineyard at Hershey on my radar for next Halloween, and probably well before then!
After all, I came dressed as a bank robber, collected a bag of loot, drank some wine, made some friends and escaped to a beautiful dock overlooking a pond. I'd say I made out like a bandit!
