Like many people…read morethis year, I decided to tackle a few much needed areas of my house using the Marie Kondo method. The inevitable problem is that you end up with a LOT of stuff to get rid of, and I can't help but be mindful about how all this waste effects our environment. My husband fixes computers at home, and thus has a lot of old computer parts that don't have a use or purpose. After decluttering them, I felt really guilty about just pitching them, not knowing about where they would be decomposing, or what risks they pose by doing so. I had some experience with disposing of electronics before, but what I had found is that it is often costly and inconvenient. Therefore, when I found RET3, I felt like it had to be too good to be true. I called them up to inquire whether they really would accept any electronics for recycling at no cost, and indeed, they do! (with the minor exception of TVs which are incredibly difficult and costly to recycle) I headed down on a weekday, and while I had a little difficulty entering the location, it was helpful that the gentleman on the phone mentioned that the entrance is actually on East 39th, not on E 40th as the address would suggest. If you are able to find the RET3 Job Corps sign, you're in the right place. My mistake was that I didn't realize the door pushes open, as it appeared that the door was locked since the handle didn't turn. In any case, my dropoff was incredibly easy. There was a gentleman there to help me unload my car, and he was able to give me a tax deductible receipt as well. My only small complaint was that I wish I could find more information about RET3 and their work process. I could see from some research that they are indeed a 501(c)(3) organization (yay for supporting local nonprofits!) and that they also employ locally, but I wanted to learn more about these efforts impact on the community, more information abut how their work programs. I was able to find some information on their website, but I didn't see anything in their space like brochures or otherwise to advertise the great work that they do. In any case, I had a really positive experience donating to RET3, and I would highly recommend for anyone looking to shed some extra clutter in a way that's a bit better as an alternative to just dumping it in your trashcan.
