Access to our room, #37 on the fourth floor (450…read morepounds for 3 nights), was down a dark hallway where you had to take an extra step past the door before a motion sensor turned on the hall light so you could guide the key into the lockset. I don't know if our room was typical but we two seniors found it to be uncomfortably small. What used to be a shallow closet is now a shallow bathroom, the closet now is just four hooks on the wall in the entryway. The remainder of the room is an 8 x 8-foot cubicle with bare walls and bare wood floor. Furnishings included a small double bed in the corner shoved up against the old radiator, a bare wooden chair that was little more than a small stool, and a desk with three drawers that impeded access to the bathroom, so much so that it had no hinged door. Instead, there is a sliding door that you must side step past to get between it and a refrigerator that stuck out beneath the desk where the chair ought to be. There is one Type-G outlet above the desk, two if you unplug the fridge. Curiously, there was no toilet paper holder in the bathroom so be sure the loose roll is within reach before you squeeze between the toilet and pedestal sink. Alas, the narrow bed is a corner bed so only one of you will enjoy easy in and out access. There is a big window that lets in lots of air but you must stand on the bed to reach the horizontal pull bar at the top with its built-in shade. There is a hair dryer, an electric teapot, and an AC wall unit. There is also a TV but all you're going to do in this room is sleep and shower. Cramped space aside, the room is clean, secure, and its central location can't be beat. The Covent Garden tube station on the Piccadilly line and the Tottenham Court Road station on the Elizabeth, Northern, and Central lines are both less than a quarter mile away. We took the Elizabeth line in from Heathrow and had no problem pushing our spinners through St. Giles square and the Shaftesbury neighborhood to reach the front door. Check-in is 3 pm but early arrivals are welcome to leave their luggage inside by the new elevator. If I was younger I would have given it four stars.

After spending countless hours on Trip Advisor, we booked a room here for two reasons: It was cheap and it was in a good location. The inside is sort of weird but I imagine that's typical of many of the converted hotels lining Gower Street. We stayed on the first floor which was actually a story above street level and I'm still not sure exactly how that worked. The room was very quaint and furnished tacky but there were two beds (one twin and one full), a desk, a small TV bolted on the wall, and a private bathroom with a shower (which we paid extra to have). Both of the beds were pretty hard but for the price we paid I didn't expect anything more. My favorite part about the room was that the TV remote was on a cord that was bolted to one of the head boards. Of course, we only had about four channels so there weren't a lot of options anyway. The owner of the hotel was very pleasant but he got a little flustered if we asked him more than one question at a time. He provided us with a hair dryer and there was a plug adapter/converter already in our room that I was thankful to have. Breakfast was provided each morning and was served in the little dining room down in the basement. It certainly wasn't a traditional English breakfast but it was tasty and filling, so no complaints from me. They served bacon and eggs with toast, cereal, orange juice, and coffee or tea. The coffee was a little rough but everything else was fine. The location of this hotel is great though. It's within walking distance of Euston Square Station, Goodge Street Station, and St. Pancreas International but if you're walking with luggage from Euston Station it feels like a pretty long walk. At least it did for me. Overall I'd say Gower House was a decent hotel. It's certainly not luxury at all, but it's quaint and cheap.

The room was very small with a 5'x5' bathroom that you couldn't turn around in. The closet was four foot high with 4 hangers and the bed barely got in the room. The first night we were awoken by footsteps from above for most of the evening. We dismissed it, trying not to be "ugly Americans". The second night, the same. The next morning we asked to be moved and told the only available room was smaller. I don't believe that was possible. We chose to tough it out. The third night we were again awoken at 2am by loud banging from the room above. I went to the front desk to complain and was told I was being inconsiderate of the other guests. You can imagine my response. By 5am, the noise began again. We complained again and insisted on leaving. They returned the last two nights charges and we booked a real hotel.

I would caution any potential guests that these rooms are Spartan and look nothing like the posted pictures on the Grosvenor House website. My room is somewhat dingy with a worn-out mattress, bad towels, no soap, and a lingering smell. That said, it is £85 and a flawless location. If you don't plan on spending much time in your hotel, it will do nicely.

We found out about Cherry Court Hotel from a Rick Steves book. We had never visited London before…read more In my research, I realized Cherry Court had a fantastic price and the location near Victoria Station made it handy. The booking process was more involved than doing a usual online booking but not difficult: I emailed the owner to request certain days (about 6 months ahead of time) and had a reply in about 10 minutes saying the days were available and we needed to call to supply a credit card to pay for our first night. We did that promptly and had a choice of first or second floor. We went with 2nd, after asking which was quieter. I didn't hear from them again in advance of our dates but everything was ready when we arrived. A quick walk up the steep, narrow stairs, and we were in our cozy room. As tight as space was, it worked out well. The bathroom is itty bitty but the shower and toilet worked great and fresh towels were supplied each day; soap was supplied, but not shampoo or conditioner. The bed takes up much of the room. The mattress is good and I liked my memory foam pillow. I asked for a hair dryer at the front desk and it worked great. There are lots of plugs, UK three-prong and USB, on two sides of the room. They supply a nice fruit basket for breakfast each day; ours had 2 bananas, 2 small apples, 2 clementines, a Nature Valley granola bar, a pack of digestive biscuits or ginger biscuits, and 2 Capri Suns. There is also a carafe of water, drinking glasses, a hot water kettle and instant coffee, and a telephone. Also, downstairs by the office they have hot and cold water on tap. Noise wasn't a problem either from the street or other rooms. Heavy rain woke me up often one night, but that's not an issue on them. The room doesn't supply much social or work space; there was a table along a stairway landing if needed. However, that was a minor issue for us, as we planned to be out adventuring all the day long. If you want a room to allow you to hang out or have guests, you had best look elsewhere. As promised, the place was very convenient to Victoria Station. That was fantastic! There's even a decently sized Sainsbury's grocery store with long hours right at the most convenient station entrance. That makes it an easy stop to get toiletries or food. I would stay at Cherry Court Hotel again. Quarters may be tight, but that's the norm for London, and the people here are nice and there are positives galore. Rick Steves was right to recommend this place.
