Rushton gave me the best price for tree pruning but I had two significant problems with their work: their timeliness and following the correct scope of work that I requested.
Larry with Rushton came out on August 2 to give me a quote for pruning a pretty large elm tree that was mostly dead. The work would include removing all the dead wood which was the entire top part of the tree. The bottom of the tree had regrown since the tree's near demise, was healthy, and nicely blocked the view of the neighbors roof behind me and gave shade to the rear of the lot. In order to communicate the scope of work clearly, I instructed Larry that I wanted the tree to be cut to 7' above ground level, which is what he wrote on the estimate. In order to get a lower price, I also requested that they leave the branches for me to haul away on my own.
I obtained 3 estimates and Rushton's was the least expensive by a good margin. The only caveat was that they wouldn't be able to do the work for a few weeks because their schedule was busy. I was not in a huge hurry and I accepted their bid.
Two months later I called to check on their schedule and they assured me they would do the work soon, and would contact me. A month after that I called again. This time I told them I needed a definitive date that the work would be done. The lady I spoke with gave me two possible dates, and said if they couldn't make it one the first date they would call me. As expected, they didn't show on the first date and no phone call. A few days later they called to tell me they could make it on the second date they had provided: Nov. 30.
That's right. It took them 4 months to get to my tree pruning.
They told me their crew had another job in the morning, and that they'd likely be there in the afternoon. I wanted to be there when they arrived to make sure everything went according to plan, so I showed up at 10AM and discovered that they had finished taking down the tree and were already cleaning up. They had removed the top of the tree to 7' above the ground but they had also removed the live branches from the tree, leaving me with a 7' tall stump. At this point, the requested scope of work had been abandoned along with the promised schedule.
I felt as though I had hired some guys with chainsaws to arrive at their leisure and do whatever work they felt like doing.
The worker I spoke with was apologetic and said that the office was very bad at communicating with him, which I could certainly relate to. The actual work that the crew did was fine (if I had requested a 7' tall tree stump), including removal of the debris, which I had not requested.
Would I hire Rushton again?? The answer is a very hesitant "Maybe". Primarily because I don't think anyone can beat their prices. I was not impressed by their lack of promptness. The one thing their office did right was to give me a 10% discount on the cost for making me wait so long. I'd only hire them if: 1) I'm in no hurry whatsoever for the work to get done and 2.) I know with absolute certainty that they will not start the work until I am there to supervise what they're doing. Otherwise, be very careful with this company.
UPDATE:
I originally gave Rushton 3 stars and now I see I gave them too much credit. I just received a "contract" in the mail from them saying that I was to receive tree injections (for $80/ea.) for an ash in my front yard that Rushton's estimator had tried to talk me into when bidding the original tree pruning in my back yard. The problem is that I never asked for that work to be done, and did not even express interest such work. Furthermore, the "contract" says that it "does not require my signature" and that it is "automatically renewed each year". I called immediately to clear up the situation. The lady on the phone tried to appear surprised at such a mixup. BEWARE Rushton Tree Service! read more
