A1 Diesel Truck Repair

A1 Diesel Truck Repair

Absolutely terrible experience with A1 Diesel. Truck went in for an issue that clearly seemed…read moreelectrical related, they had the truck for 2 1/2 weeks with very little real progress. In the end, THEY ended up taking it to Clark Power Services because they were simply incapable of figuring out what was wrong themselves. Clark had the issue figured out in roughly 3 hours flat after A1 had the truck for over 2 weeks with no real findings. The issue ultimately ended up being a bad ECM, something they could not properly diagnose on their own. That alone should tell you everything you need to know. It felt like they were just throwing parts at the truck instead of properly diagnosing anything. I can't really say communication was awful, but by that point I was honestly so burnt out dealing with this situation that I had almost stopped caring altogether. Losing time and money like that gets old quick. While the truck was there, I also had them replace the steering gearbox. Got the truck back and immediately realized something was seriously wrong -- I had roughly two turns to the left and only one turn to the right. They had both connection points installed on the wrong teeth on the gearbox. Because of that, I had to miss out on even more work and take the truck BACK to them to fix their mistake again after the fact. So basically, they charged me almost $5,000 to replace a steering gearbox and couldn't even get that right the first time. It should be common practice to actually check and make sure the truck works properly before sending it out the door. I also had to spend around 2 hours trying to figure out why my air conditioning suddenly wasn't working after getting the truck back. Turns out they had pulled the A/C relay and never put it back in. On top of all that, I then had to take the truck to a THIRD shop to actually get the ECM swapped out because the truck is EGR deleted and tuned. That part isn't really A1's fault if they don't want to work on deleted trucks, but overall I ended up off work for roughly 3 weeks, over $10,000 deep in parts and labor, not even counting the thousands and thousands of dollars lost from downtime and taking the truck to an incapable shop to begin with. All of this for an issue that took Clark roughly 3 hours to diagnose, and my trusted shop less than 2 days to get the ECM ordered, tuned, installed, and the truck back on the road. 3 weeks. 3 damn weeks. I will say the people there seem good hearted and kind, but in my opinion the shop feels heavily staffed with younger mechanics who just don't have the experience or knowledge yet to properly diagnose and work on semis. That might be okay for small jobs, but when your truck is your livelihood, guessing and trial-and-error repairs get expensive fast. After all the downtime, stress, lost work, and repeated issues, I would not recommend A1 Diesel to anyone who actually depends on their truck to make a living. Save yourself the stress, wasted time, and wasted money and go somewhere else.

I took to several "diesel specialists" and every one of them told me I had a blown head gasket and would need a $10,000 repair for a truck barely worth more than that. I finally found Mo at A1. He diagnosed what the real problem was OVER THE PHONE! Took it to him and he verified that the heater core was plugged due to one of the brilliant guys I took it to before mixing a different (wrong) type of coolant in the engine which gummed it all up. He cleared out as much sludge as he could and got the heat working again. He could have easily said what the others said and pocketed several thousand dollars. If you have a diesel, this is the only HONEST place you should take it to.

I saw a new Sure Trac Trailer with a Midway Trailer Sales sticker on it. Looked them up. They had just what I wanted and were better priced than other dealers, even further away. Easy transaction, made deposit by phone. Went up Saturday and Brandon breezed through the paper work. Had Seth help set up the trailer for our truck as this was our first gooseneck. We found that the factory ramps obscured the rear tail lights. Seth immediately suggested a fix, got it approved in minutes and quickly installed additional lights at no cost that should keep us out of trouble with Highway Enforcement. Special thanks to Seth who got us on our long trip home in record time. Everybody at Midway was super nice, knowledgeable, and easy to deal with.

It was after 6 pm on a Friday so everything was closed. Apparently, while limping down the side of the interstate, we picked up a chunk of metal in the second axel tire too. First thing I did was start looking to see who was open Saturday and see if I could find the tires online. At 7am, I started making calls, closest to furthest. I needed a tire, a new spare, bearings and a flat fixed. I was dreading that it was Saturday because I knew everyone would be booked up. Walmart tire center didn't have any of the things I needed. The closest trailer shop didn't either. Next on my list was Midway. I called slightly before they open but they picked right up. Not only did they have everything I needed, but they said, "come on over, we will fix you right up." I unhitched the trailer and headed over. They immediately helped me, replaced the blowout, got me new bearings, (plus a spare set,) fixed the flat, and all while doing that, discovered it had a slice on the inside sidewall. Had they not noticed, that surely would have blown before we got home. These guys are super knowledgeable and skilled at what they do. In addition, they didn't charge us labor because he said it was costly enough to move across country. All that AND I was gone within 30 minutes!! I love these guys. Go visit, buy trailers, get service and tell them Karen says hi.
