I detoured on my trip home to see if Rural King had tomato plants as I was delayed starting my own plants this year. I like Rural King because they carry everything that you could possibly need for your farm (or backyard garden). This Rural King was well stocked with mowing and other gardening machinery. A good supply of plants were available in six packs that were reasonably priced at $6/6 pk. I was able to find four varieties that I wanted. Inside, the store is neat and well organized. A big sign invites customers to grab a bag of fresh popcorn or a cup of coffee. I got my popcorn, for sure. I always visit the baby chicks when I am at Rural King, which are generally in the back of the store, past the candy and pet supplies. I saw plenty of baby chicks, but left them behind for other backyard farmers. Checkout was down home friendly and quick. They open new registers if there are more than two people in line. Great place. While visiting Knoxville, we were asked to pick up some rabbit and chicken supplies for our daughter, and the shelves were empty. A friendly employee checked with the manager on duty and they had just come in on a truck and not yet brought out. He directed us to the right location, another great associate asked what we needed and picked it up and put it them in our cart. Free popcorn read more

Hubby had heard about this store that was Tractor Supply on steroids, so we went and checked it out. Personally, I was disappointed in it. For one, being so sensitive in my respiratory system, it was obviously an older building although the exterior appeared to have had a facelift. There's black residue on the ceiling tiles being blown out the HVAC system, and evidence of water damage. The store wasn't that clean, and the employees evidently don't have to wear presentable attire ie for the public: at least a vest like TSC employees wear, which, btw, are more professional in appearance by far. Hubby wanted me to get a new pair of cowgirl boots, but their selection was poor. Yes, they had many more to choose from than TSC, but nothing of special merit. I was hoping that they carried Ariat Cruisers, but none were stocked at least. They did have a better selection of both Muck and hiking boots to be fair. Because of the poor air quality, we didn't stay long although I am sure that hubby would have liked to have looked around a bit more. That's the first time I remember ever seeing bunny rabbits in a store; and they also had chicks. By and large, I'm sure that the store is okay, but the poor air quality was enough to make this stop both my first and last time at this Rural King location. read more

It's been a while since I've found a store that I like well enough that I simply enjoy spending time strolling about within its confines, taking in the sights, the sounds, and in some areas, the smells. The scent of seeds and feeds; leather; popcorn! The cool metallic scent of hardware; the fresh scent of denim shirts and jeans. Bring your dogs; your children; your wives and girlfriends! There's something for all at Rural King! I really didn't know what to expect as I walked in for my first visit. Seeing shopping carts equipped with pet blankets was a good sign, though; as was an employee handing out fresh-popped popcorn to patrons as we entered. Casual clothes. Shoes & boots. Out door leisure items. Firearms & ammo. Automotive accessories. Housewares. Cattle gates. Fencing materials. Sheep dip. Dog dip. Dog coats. Sheep and goat coats. People coats. Insecticides, fungicides, fleaicides! Baby chicks. Baby pigs. Ladders. Saws! Cattle shutes. Utility trailers. Mowers & rakes. Tents & stakes! Power tools. (DeWalt & Milwaukee, even!) Chain saws; hammers & mauls! Rural King is a 'general store'. It's where Ranch & Farm mixes with a twist of Urban. Heck, take a 'first date' here for an hour, and you'll know more about her by the time you leave, than after the most romantic of candle-light dinners. Okay; the store: The isles are wide, well-lighted, and well-marked. There are plenty of employees to help 'locate and load'. Restroom was clean. (Right, at main entrance.) Shopping carts are correctly sized, and bulk carts are available. Pets are welcome! Items are visibly priced, and items 'on sale' actually carried a substantial mark-down. I examined several items against pricing from area stores and found that in most instances, prices were equal or slightly below those of competing stores. Alas, I could have saved almost 25$ on a recent hardware purchase, had I visited RK first! Parking is adequate, with plenty of room for large vehicles and/or trailers. ADA access is great. Well, let's start with the positive. Rural King has a treasure trove of inventory, from hunting needs, work clothes, garden supplies, to pet supplies, snacks, candy, and even live chicks! Here's the problem with Rural King, it's the lack of employees when you need them, and I mean big time, particularly in the outside garden center! Today, after making a small purchase inside the store, we walked over to the garden center to check out some trees. While browsing around, we saw some large clay pots we wanted to look at, but they were wrapped up on wooden pallets. We also saw a fire pit and a bird bath that we couldn't find prices for. We were in need of an employee. There was a guy who had been helping a customer load up their truck, but then he disappeared. My husband hunted around for him and after several minutes, he was found. I told the young man, who was very friendly, that I'd like to see the pots on two different pallets, both right next to each other. He unwrapped one pallet and then stepped away, never to be seen again! I still wanted to see the pots on the other pallet. He knew that. I didn't understand why he walked away. We couldn't find him! We decided to go get our truck washed and then come back. When we returned about 25 minutes later, we experienced the same issue. I decided to call Rural King's customer service. That took two tries to get someone to answer the freaking phone! When someone finally answered, they offered excuses, excuses, excuses. By this point, I didn't want to hear excuses. All I wanted was for someone to help us! Soon thereafter, two very nice employees showed up. Of course, they, too, had excuses. I have to say, these kids should not have been put in a situation like this. The lack of customer service is not their fault, it's management's fault! It's management's responsibility to have enough employees on the floor, and if there are not enough employees, good management steps in to help. Both employees were pleasant and took care of our needs. We ended up spending over $200. How ridiculous that we basically had to beg Rural King for us to spend our money there! I also don't understand why they do not have a cashier in the garden center. We had to take our pots, fire pit, and bird bath all the way back to the store to be rung up. Could they not have, at least, the available option of paying by credit card with one of those portable handheld credit card machines so we do not have to walk all the way back to the store and wait in another line?? Geez, it's just part of customer service! One more thing I want to bring up. I just wonder how much in sales they lose because no employees are around to help! And what about theft. You cannot tell me that unscrupulous people don't walk out of the garden center with items they choose not to pay for! Rural King management needs to look at these issues and understand that it's to their benefit to staff the garden center with employees who are present when there are customers who need assistance. Will I shop at Rural King again? Yes, I will, but if this happens again, I won't wait around for someone to help me. I'll go someplace else that offers better, or should I say, any customer service, AND who is more than willing to make a sale! read more

This is definitely my favorite store in halls, they have all the outdoor needs that I could think of. They also let people take their dogs inside which is totally cool. They also give free popcorn to everyone and coffee, I love this place. read more

Prices are good but the store is a mess and a lot of the good items are usually out of stock. Employees are subpar, and always hanging out in front of the store to the right on break smoking cigarettes and cursing up a storm right by the entrance. Love this place, has everything you need tool wise, plus a small gun / ammo department. Go at least once a week just to look around. Free popcorn is always a plus! Only slight downside is the lines get really long in peak times but the workers seem to always be doing their part to try and keep up. read more

They said they just got my order and the time it showed they got it was around 11:40 am. I had to go get my order. This is why they got this score. This is my 3rd time ordering in online. First time same time ordering same product same problem got there around 11:15 ish and they just got my order. I again had to get my order. Second time I placed an order for same thing. I got there and I did receive and email say my product was ready to pick up. Not the case. When I got there, they said oh we are out of your product. I walked back there and there was a pallet there of my product. They have a major problem with online ordering and knowing there was an issue and knowing I was upset, they did not even call a manager. Nothing came of it except my stupidity for going and getting my own order again and again and yes again. I will never shop with them again. Every. We've shopped many times at Rural King. The store may be a little on the old side as it's in an old Wally-world building, but recently purchased a generator from them. It was a great deal but little did I know the company that made them was going out of business. When a switch failed, they were not able to get a warranty replacement part. Mr. Lawrence, the manager, was will willing to take the item back for a full refund or give a partial refund if I wanted to handle the repairs myself. I'm still very happy with my purchase and kept the generator. They were more than fair. Thanks to Levi and Jeff for great customer service. read more

I sent a question to rural king requesting information on a specific product. I have a 2000 lumen Lincoln Outfitters flashlight. I was trying to find out where colored lenses can be purchased. my work often requires me to be out after dark and red or green lenses would better suited to search in the dark. as of today 07/30/2020 no one has offered any information or help to purchase replacement lenses. Ordered a kennel cover, waited 2 weeks and received no product or update. Site said product would ship within 2 business days. Called customer service and waited over 30 minutes being 5th in line. Finally reached a human and they had no explanation, 2days later was told out of stock in their "online " warehouse but would look elsewhere. Another week without word so I'm canceling the order. I love this place because they have so much variety for such a competitive price. We enjoy going there just to browse around for no real needs sometimes. Rural King is lacking with their online orders and having the items you paid for ready in store. I have made a couple orders and get an email confirmation that my order is ready only to show up and them tell me they need to cancel my order bc the item or items are not at their store as stated online. I also feel like they try to cut budget on their check out lines too much. Usually if you're trying to check out, you'll be waiting a good while. The two negatives being stated still doesn't steer me away from this store. At the end of the day, they have good prices and so far offer good products. if what you need is in the store it's good place. but if you need to order something &/or use tax-exempt status--forget it! You're expected to wait on the phone for 30 to 40 minutes & hope you can get it straightened out. There are plenty of other stores, maybe with a bit higher prices, but they can handle my business in minutes not hours. I suspect they saw a perfect opportunity for expansion but don't have the management skills to handle it.
