    Great salsa bar!
    Gen M.

Family run, this place makes delicious, fresh Mexican food. The Chile rellenos are lightly battered, the pozole chick full of yumminess, and the tacos and burritos filling. A great salsa bar, too! The folks who work here are super friendly, too.

    The proud Ruperto!

Ruperto's Kitchen is a small Mexican venue in the Kimber plaza of Newbury park. Few tables, simple decore, and everything looks and feels very clean. The menu on the wall is rather extensive, many classic Mexican food items we eat in the US (ie., burritos, nachos, etc.), but also some items that you rarely see in Mexican restaurant in the US are included (Ie., sopes, gorditas, etc.). Ruperto's is more than a Mexican place for a traditional bite, it is an experience where to have a chat with Ruperto and ask him for the special, thus, the items are not in the menu. Is THE EXPERIENCE! I had pork chops with a truly spicy hand made and fresh sauce. OMG! It was like eating at my Mom's back in Mexico City, flavors everywhere! A luxury now days are hand made tortillas, Ruperto prepares those tortillas for you, right here in Newbury Park! I had the privilege of talking to Ruperto and learn a bit of his story as a long time resident of the area. Stop by and judge for yourself.

"Hard shell tacos" the first batch that was made by the guy that's being "trained" who looked like he was in his 40-50's...

PLEASE save your money and time elsewhere. I ordered online on their website (stated 30 min wait) and got a notification 15 mins later saying my order was canceled by the company they use 'Menustar' (Still waiting for the refund). So I called and made an order instead. 3 hard shell tacos (2 asada & 1 chicken) and 4oz guacamole on the side. Picked up my order after waiting 15 mins even tho he said it would be 8 mins. Luckily I opened my takeout before I drove off and was so confused on what I ordered. It looked like dry broken up taquitos. I almost just accepted that he heard my order wrong until I took a bite and was disgusted by it. Went back inside and showed him that they weren't tacos. He also looked at them with confusion. Told me if I preferred different meat because they premade their shredded beef and chicken, only because I was short on time I said sure. So the guy in the back remade them, took another 15 mins and I looked at them again and they look a TAD bit more presentable but nothing like the previous yelp posts. The worker at the front apologized before I walked out, saying his dad usually makes them but his dad is out running errands, which I am assuming is the owner. This place takes no pride in the quality of their food or presentation. Also, same as what everyone has said, meat is stale, old, dry and they put very little. NEVER going to go back.

Hard shell tacos (asada, pastor, chicken), chicken enchiladas, and tons of salsa

Delicious little Mexican spot! We've had the tacos, enchiladas, quesadilla, burrito, and horchata and everything is out of control good. The prices are reasonable, especially the tacos - $2.75 each whereas the sit-down Mexican restaurants in the area charge twice that. You won't be disappointed!

Asada burrito had more onion than meat, and the meat that it did have was very dry.

Service was nice and amicable, but the food was not very good. We ordered burritos and were disappointed at how bland they were. Meat was very dry and so was the rice. Sadly, we won't be coming back :(

This was dry!!!! Better Torta at jungle juice in Oxnard off Saviers yes you need to drive to get the best Mexican food and you'll be happy

If you want a rice burrito, this is the spot, but if you've expecting some meat, look elsewhere

Waited over 20 minutes for a takeout order and the meatball soup was filled with cucumbers. Super gross. No utensils provided, either.

Authentic! Uses lard, but so they do in Mexico. Items taste good and they have choices that are hard to get outside of Mexido.

I finally stopped in for lunch and left already planning my next visit, it was that good! The restaurant is small, cozy, and filled with locals. It's the kind of place that has me dusting off my Spanish when it's time to order (which is usually a pretty good sign). The staff is incredibly friendly and despite my lack of fluency in a language I really should have mastered by now....we always make it work. If I had to make a simple recommendation, come for the tacos. The homemade tortillas are some of the freshest I've had around town and make every protein shine. On my visit, I tried the carnitas and al pastor tacos and while both were excellent, the carnitas were the standout for me. I'd happily come back for those alone. A solid carnitas tacos with their classic toppings and again, the fresh tortilla is what makes this spot standout from the others nearby.

My husband wasn't thrilled with his torta, but I think he just ordered the wrong thing for him. My brother had a Carnitas burrito and it was enough for 2+ meals. There are a few tables but not much atmosphere. Great for a quick meal or takeout.

And in a way, that's exactly what El Sancho Cantina is: an escape. A secret. A little taste of something else. Whether you slide in for lunch, happy hour, or dinner, El Sancho is where you come to cheat on your routine. Tucked into Thousand Oaks, it's a getaway hidden in plain sight. Sit at the bar, let the cool breeze drift through, and allow the Spanish ballads to work their magic. For a moment, you'll forget where you are--and believe you've wandered into a dreamy cantina somewhere deep in Mexico. Start with the "El Viejo"--their riff on an Old Fashioned. Let the applewood smoke swirl above the glass as you lean in. The aroma hits first, then the deep flavors of añejo tequila and Mexican whiskey settle in with smooth confidence. Sip slow. This isn't a race--it's a seduction. If you're looking for something a little lighter--a healthy balance between indulgence and intention--try the two taco plate with the green salad substitution. I went for one Potato taco, one Shredded Chicken taco, and swapped out the rice and beans for a salad of mixed greens and cucumber, dressed with balsamic vinaigrette and a squeeze of fresh lime. The flavors were bright, clean, and satisfying. I walked away full--but not heavy. If I was meeting my Sancha after, I could've easily gone for a stroll. Maybe even dessert. But don't let me lead you down the wrong path--the tacos and cocktails are already all the temptation you need. And if that post-lunch lull starts to creep in, fight back with the "El Cafecito"--a soulful wake-up call of Licor 43, Kahlúa, cold brew coffee, and chocolate bitters. My personal pick over an espresso martini--bold, smooth, and unapologetically delicious. So yes, you might be cheating on SoCal for an hour with Mexico vibes, but El Sancho doesn't judge. In fact, it invites you back--with open arms, a strong pour, and just the right amount of trouble.
