I've given this place a try twice now and it's severely disappointed both times. Got tacos a few weeks back and they were below average. This morning, we called in to pick up a breakfast burrito. On the website it's advertised as having bacon and chorizo. Well....absolutely no meat. I opened it up and there's absolutely not any chorizo or bacon. I don't think there's any cheese in here either. If there is, it's incredibly minuscule. Over $13 for rice, eggs, beans, and potatoes in a tortilla???? Absolute rip off. read more

I really wanted to like Ruperto's Kitchen since the owner was so nice, but unfortunately the food is not something I would order again. We ordered a variety of food and meat from Ruperto's for takeout. We ordered shredded beef flautas, hard shell shredded beef tacos, chicken enchiladas, 3 taco combo plate, and carnitas nachos. All of the meat was over cooked and dried out in each of the different meals. The carne asada, carnitas, and pastor tacos were inedible. The meat was so dry and tasted like it had been cooked and reheated multiple times. If I had been at Ruperto's, I would have asked for a refund. These tacos were not eaten by anyone in our group. The carnitas on the carnitas nachos was the same way. Super dry and no flavor. The nachos came with only the chips, cheese, beans, and carnitas. The shredded beef flautas were the best thing out of everything we ordered. The chips and beans were also good. They were good enough to eat, but not something I would return for. I am so disappointed in our meals from Ruperto's. I would not recommend coming here and won't be back. read more

My husband and I think it's important to support local restaurants. Typically, we purchase takeout Mexican food from 3 Amigos, but I decided to order from Rupertos for a change. Turned out, NOT a good idea... Firstly, there were no prices listed on the menu board or printed menus. Is that even legal? The carne asada taco meat was tasteless, as was the shredded beef in the burrito I ordered. Kinda off-putting to me was an employee and a kid sitting outside the door of the restaurant in folding chairs next to friends/family members parked in a beat-up car. The local park is a better place to hang out. Cashier was polite, and the place is clean, but I will stick with 3 Amigos. read more

Ruperto's Kitchen is a small Mexican venue in the Kimber plaza of Newbury park. Few tables, simple decore, and everything looks and feels very clean. The menu on the wall is rather extensive, many classic Mexican food items we eat in the US (ie., burritos, nachos, etc.), but also some items that you rarely see in Mexican restaurant in the US are included (Ie., sopes, gorditas, etc.). Ruperto's is more than a Mexican place for a traditional bite, it is an experience where to have a chat with Ruperto and ask him for the special, thus, the items are not in the menu. Is THE EXPERIENCE! I had pork chops with a truly spicy hand made and fresh sauce. OMG! It was like eating at my Mom's back in Mexico City, flavors everywhere! A luxury now days are hand made tortillas, Ruperto prepares those tortillas for you, right here in Newbury Park! Friendly staff but the food was horrendous. Review is for the carne asada burrito. Overcooked and stale meat in my burrito -- must have been sitting under a heat lamp for 24 hrs or so. A doughy and gummy tortilla filled with mushy rice and at least a 1/4 cup of onion per burrito. WAY too much onion! Beans had remnants of skin and were not completely refried or mashed in an appetizing way. No cilantro, crema, or other burrito flareups to add some flavor. Salsa was watery and flavorless as well. This is something of a hidden gem in Newbury Park. It's family owned and run, and you won't find a better and more genuinely authentic Mexican restaurant in the area (and I'm someone who grew up in Texas near the border!). The food is fresh and intensely flavorful. I've tried virtually everything on the menu, from the classic combinations to a la carte tacos to the pozole and menudo. Prices are average and not high, and the service (mostly provided by Ruperto himself) is always delightful and friendly. I cannot recommend this place enough, and I suspect that any poor reviews on this site come either from folks with horrendous taste or who work for competing businesses. Best Mexican food in the area, hands down! Oh, and their hot salsa is INCREDIBLE. read more

PLEASE save your money and time elsewhere. I ordered online on their website (stated 30 min wait) and got a notification 15 mins later saying my order was canceled by the company they use 'Menustar' (Still waiting for the refund). So I called and made an order instead. 3 hard shell tacos (2 asada & 1 chicken) and 4oz guacamole on the side. Picked up my order after waiting 15 mins even tho he said it would be 8 mins. Luckily I opened my takeout before I drove off and was so confused on what I ordered. It looked like dry broken up taquitos. I almost just accepted that he heard my order wrong until I took a bite and was disgusted by it. Went back inside and showed him that they weren't tacos. He also looked at them with confusion. Told me if I preferred different meat because they premade their shredded beef and chicken, only because I was short on time I said sure. So the guy in the back remade them, took another 15 mins and I looked at them again and they look a TAD bit more presentable but nothing like the previous yelp posts. The worker at the front apologized before I walked out, saying his dad usually makes them but his dad is out running errands, which I am assuming is the owner. Delicious little Mexican spot! We've had the tacos, enchiladas, quesadilla, burrito, and horchata and everything is out of control good. The prices are reasonable, especially the tacos - $2.75 each whereas the sit-down Mexican restaurants in the area charge twice that. You won't be disappointed! read more

Burrito made me sick and I missed a day of work as a result. That's an expensive burrito! 3 Amigos never made me sick. I see a couple other reviewers mentioning food poisoning so they probably don't take proper food safety precautions here. Downgrading to 1 star because someone from Ruperto's keeps sending me offensive "compliments" and stalking my profile. Probably one of the owners. They send another one every month and have been doing it for a year. I can't post the content of their comments because Yelp would remove my review for profanity. Always the same person too! Since I know they're reading this I have a suggestion: If your food makes multiple people sick maybe you could try talking to your kitchen and making sure everyone has completed their food safety training. Unfortunately I can not recommend this place and I'm usually pretty flexible. But I've given this place 3 chances while working nearby, at different times of the year and day. Their burritos have very little actual beef and you find yourself thinking it's a rice burrito. The front counter is manned by what seems like the owner and for some reason he's extremely slow, like unbearably so. Especially during work hours ordering takes what feels like over 10 minutes total, and the delay causes the order to be delayed getting to the kitchen. Well we have a new found Mexican favorite! I don't think I would have found this place but I searched for a takeout Mexican place here on Yelp. We normally go to our 3 friends. So glad we decided to try this place. I'm a chili relleno fan and there's not a decent one in N.P. (fight me.) First bite of the relleno and I knew I'd found my new local spot. Authentic! Uses lard, but so they do in Mexico. Items taste good and they have choices that are hard to get outside of Mexido.

I really enjoy their al pastor burrito/tacos. Some places you get something kind of like al pastor, but this is the real deal. Solid food in a nondescript little strip mall in Newbury Park. Burrito size is generous and tacos are always good too. This has become my go to place when I'm craving Mexican food. read more

Service was a little slow and there is, so far, only one table in the resteraunt. Food was delicious and the portion size for the burrito was huge. First off - this a a super casual, mostly take out place. They gave a few folding tables and chairs but no one is likely to wait on you and you shouldn't expect it. They are extremely nice, patient and helpful when you order and when your food is ready making sure you don't forget napkins, etc. . The food: delicious. I had chicken enchiladas with green sauce (twice it was so ridiculously good) and I have had an asada taco which was also good (street style). Their chips are BOMB (freshly homemade) and their salsa good. I recommend this place. read more
