There was a Halloween party when we arrived. Stepped up to pay for a tasting but was ignored by staff for a family friend which they served first. Paid for our tasting and had to wait in line to start. Our attendant had knowledge of the wines but lacked the foresight to listen to comments or questions. She only commented on her likes. The wines were descent but missed the smells and flavor. Only one stood out during the tasting. The Riesling was offered a tart apple taste with tart finish. We ordered the pizza that was being made there for the day. It took a little more time than expected but was worth the wait. The dough was thick, soft and chewy. Had a some meat on meat lovers but tasted good. read more

I had my wedding reception here last October and the venue is absolutely beautiful. Barb, who is one of the owners, handles the events and she is so great to work with. Really friendly and easy going, very responsive to phone calls and emails. I would always get an email back within 24 hours, many times within 1 or 2. There is a huge crystal chandelier that sparkles so beautifully in the light. The wall sconces that surround the ballroom and exposed wood beams that traverse the ceiling are so charming. The french doors that line the room offer great views of the vineyard. The bathrooms are well appointed. The covered patio has built in speakers that you can hook up and ipod to through the ballroom. The rental of the ballroom comes with dark wooden chiavary chairs and 5' round tables. There are also a number of 8' rectangular tables available. I would love to give this venue 5 stars, but I felt there are a few things that could have been useful. First would be to have the dance floor movable. It is not a built-in dance floor so it can be physically moved, but it is a venue policy that it is not. It didn't affect my reception that much, however, if it were allowed I would've moved it over like 10 feet. The placement of the wedding cake is also set. Again, this didn't affect my wedding that much, but it would've been nice to be able to pick where we place the cake table. We knew that we had to purchase a certain amount of wine from the vineyard for our wedding and that was fine. They're wine is delicious! I assumed that since we were required to buy so much (6 cases = 72 bottles) we would get some sort of discount, but we weren't given one. Also, we had to purchase the wine at least 30 days prior to the event, take it home with us, and bring it back to be served. It would have been much more convenient if we could just keep it at the vineyard. I'm not sure why we had to take it. There is no "holding room" in or near the event building for the wedding party to hang out/put their things before the start of the reception. I know there is use of the carriage house, but it is not walking distance from the event building or ceremony site. I didn't do any dress changes, but for brides that do, the only option is to change in the bathroom. When exiting at the end of the night, the path to the parking lot is extremely dark. The stairs are lit up which is nice, but along the gravel, you can barley see a thing. We managed to get down fine, as did our guests, but just be careful. There are solar powered lights that line the gravel walkway, but since our wedding ended at 10, and sunset in October is about 7 or so, the solar lights were pretty much dead. This might not be the case if you were having a summer wedding and the sun sets a lot later. Overall, I loved our venue and would definitely recommend it. It is beautiful and there is nothing like it around here. It's so romantic and it feels like your worlds away. Our guests loved that it was not your typical wedding location. This was my very first experience attending a wine tasting...it was wonderful...plus it was a perfect ending to my birthday weekend...the wine was so delightful, and the beer tasting was very authentic...plus Smok N Joe's BBQ sealed the deal with the brisket, ribs and whiting were delightful...I'm so jealous that in Florida we don't have vineyards to chill at like this...except the one in homestead...overall Maryland has so much to offer...my home away from home...can't wait to return... read more

The views are absolutely amazing...Jack Rabbit Red and Jack Rabbit White are delicious if you fancy a sweeter wine. I also had the Sangiovese which was excellent as well. Only downside is if it's crowded, parking is limited. You will see make shift parking spaces along the main artery of the winery when you are closer to the tasting rooms. Also the entire road needs to be paved. This would make the lengthy ride a lot gentler on your vehicle but once you arrive, you will be glad you stopped by. read more

We went to a wedding at Running Hare last fall. It was an unexpectedly beautiful vineyard, looking much like a Tuscan vineyard. The event seemed to be well planned by the Running Hare team, with little visible hiccups. It formed a great backdrop for a great wedding. The food was good for a catered event, and the wine surprised us by being half decent. We were a little annoyed that the tasting area on the grounds shutdown right when all of us attending the wedding showed up, as we had a long wait for the ceremony to start. Other than that though, I'd highly recommend Running Hare to people scouting for wedding locations in the area. read more

The vineyard and outdoor tasting room was amazing! It was such a beautiful day and we had a memorable and knowledgeable tasting. I recommend the Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and my personal favorite was the Sangiovese. We used a Groupon which was an awesome deal but we would come again even without the deal. "I'd rather go wine tasting at the Olive Garden, they probably have better wine." That was the best comment i've heard to encapsulate this experience. The locale is beautiful! It's a gorgeous place and the only reason this place gets more than one star. We went for a wine tasting. They have a quaint little bar where they do their wine tasting. Here is issue 1 and 2. The employee that did our wine tasting was awful. She didn't rinse out our glass between each set of wine, got the order wrong and the worst part is, she rushed us. It was like the compendium version of a normal wine tasting. Issue number 2 and perhaps the most important one is, the wine is AWFUL. It's the worst wine! I couldn't even swallow the tablespoon of dessert wine ( yes, that's the tasting amount you get) we were served. They import grapes for all but ONE wine. Their awful Jack Rabbit. Go for the scenery, but bring your own wine and if you MUST taste their wine, bring snacks to wash down the taste. read more

To whom it may concern, My name is Elizabeth Kamm I am a frequent customer of yours! I always enjoy coming to your vineyard with my family,friends and my dog! But today I was very upset because one of your employees persistently harassed me about my dog. I own an italian greyhound and they are skinny dogs so this employee comes to me and asks if she should call animal protective services about how I am not feeding my dog. So I took it as a joke and told her that I do feed my dog and I told her why would I bring my starving abused animal in public? As a backfire to her comment. She pets my dog and then leaves and I am a little upset but her awkward comment and feeling quite offended that she would just assume such a hardcore accusation. So at some point my dog actually tried to jump off my lap and got tangled in his leash and he hurt himself a little and she looks over at our group and just kinda wont stop looking. She then asks me as we are about to leave if she still needs to call the animal protective services and I ask her why? She kinda awkwardly just laughs and says she can still call if he needs it. I ask her again why do you need to call animal protective service? I am very upset at this point because she is not only saying this to me but loudly so others are looking. So I just say whatever and leave but my husband comes to the car and says man this lady will not stop asking me about calling the animal protective services. So now I am just really upset and angry. So I go back and ask her to stop harassing me my husband my dog and our group. She gets defensive and acts like she has done nothing wrong and says do I need to say sorry to your husband in a really awful demeaning tone. So I just leave and tell her that she shouldn't assume anything and that it was offensive to me. And she says in a very rude tone well Im sorry for my comment. It was a very upsetting event and quite awkward. My parents bought this VIP membership there and we are always buying groupons for your vineyard. It was just awful and I don't except to be treated this way when I am paying and wanting to enjoy my time at the vineyard after my super stressful week and then having this happen... Unfortunate but it was just very awkward. I take care of my dog and he us super happy!!!!! I don't need to have people telling me that I am an abusive pet owner. The wine is reasonablely priced, and you can enjoy it with a gorgeous background. My favorite is the Jack Rabbit white wine. It is light and crisp, and it is perfect for a late summer's day. Went on a Friday night for karaoke and wine drinking. I was irritated to be told that we had to purchase a tasting ($5 each) in order to get a glass to drink wine we purchased. It was nice to have a tasting, and I might have done it regardless, but it was annoying to not have a choice. The wines: a little overpriced. The only wine that is 100% made from grapes grown on site is the Chambourcin, a dessert wine. It was good, but not my style. We ended up liking the Sangiovese and Shiraz quite a bit. We purchased a bottle of the Sangiovese. It was a very nice Friday night, sitting outside and drinking wine. I wasn't blown away by either of the whites we tasted. Service: both of the women who provided wine tastings for us were friendly and knowledgeable. They took time to chat with us and inform us about the wine. Later in the night, one them turned out to have a killer voice and blew up the karaoke stage! Atmosphere: very nice! Several people brought their dogs. There was plenty of seating and there were tons of people out. It got surprisingly rowdy (in a good way!) as the night went on. The DJ played line dancing songs and lots of people got involved. Karaoke was very entertaining, as expected. Minor gripe: the bathrooms are porta potties, which is fine, but they didn't have lights available. This made for an interesting bathroom experience. read more

Stunning vineyard with amazing views. We attended a wedding here on a windy Thursday afternoon in late May. The setting was flawless (as was the bride). The tasting area, outdoor wedding setup and main house are pristine. It was as if everything was brand new. If you are looking for a vineyard setting for your wedding, go here! They even open up the doors during the reception so you can get a clear view of the grounds. I would happily spend a sunny day here drinking some wine, sampling some cheese and just relaxing. It is dog friendly, but not high heel friendly. Ladies-bring flip flops for the walk up to the main house and back (thank me later). An amazing night with an even more amazing couple. read more

I don't know where to start about this place. If there was 10 stars I would give it 11. First off, let's start with the obvious...the wine. It's delicious. That have a great selection of reds and whites. The Riesling and Chardonnay are by far my favorites. Jack Rabbit White is delicious too. I'm not a red wine drinker, but I do enjoy theirs. The staff...5 gold stars!! Everyone is so welcoming they make you feel at home. They are very knowledgeable about their wine. Venue = gorgeous!!! Be prepared to feel like you're in Tuscany! They have a beautiful outside gazebo with an outdoor bar, tables with umbrellas, and firepit tables. Every Saturday they have live music playing too! This is a favorite for us to spend our Saturdays in summer. It is pet friendly so we can bring our dog as well. Feel free to pack a picnic basket, bring your pooch, listen to live music while drinking some wine!! What could be better? Running Hare is a must visit when in Southern Maryland. read more

So the wine is pretty good (we are not in Napa - we are in Southern Maryland). But I found the prices for the wine and snacks to be more than reasonable. Plus the staff was extremely welcoming. The venue is spectacular. Better than many wineries I have visited in California and Virginia. We have two younger kids, and judging from comments on their website I thought it wouldn't be kid friendly. But we chatted with the owner who was so warm and inviting - and let us know where some of the farm animals were located. We will be back - this time with a big picnic lunch in- tow!!! read more

I love visiting vineyards and wineries, so I snapped up this Groupon when I saw it. The location is lovely, especially the outside seating area. There was a small stage set up for live music and plenty of seating. We didn't get to see the main house because of the season. It was a beautiful day and we had a great afternoon...except for the wine. For the amount of time, money, and effort RHV has clearly put into making this a lovely hangout spot, I wish they'd spent more time on the wine. We were surprised to find that they weren't using their own grapes at all, just imported! The bottle labels and glasses were professional, but the wine tasted homemade--inconsistent from our tasting and the bottles we bought. The contrast of such a fabulous spot with less than mediocre wine is what made me give it only 2 stars. I'll definitely come back in a few years to give 'em another chance. read more

Mom and I decided to follow the little brown signs on the main road to this really awesome vineyard late in the day on a Saturday. We arrived just a half hour before they were closing up wine tasting service. They treated us beautifully, though. First off it's back off the road. WAY back off the road. Luckily they have cute little signs posted along the way so you don't think you've gone too far or you're lost. Very helpful and funny! Second you come over this hill and suddenly you feel like you're in Italian wine country. The grape rows are PRECISE and beautiful. There is a villa style reception atop a hill of grape vine rows. Off to the right as you come in there's a place for weddings to be set up and further up the drive is the tasting pavilion along with tables and chairs. They encourage people to bring picnic food and wile the day away drinking their wine and chatting. A classy, Mediterranean party atmosphere. Third...the WINE!!! I was so impressed with not only their selection but the knowledge they imparted about the types of berries, where they were grown (they import some from Chile for pressing), and where the different flavors of the wine will hit your mouth and throat. I was blown away. I ended up buying a bottle of their white table wine and a bottle of their red dessert wine. Fantastic! I definitely want to go back! read more

My friend got married here October 2012 and it was beautiful. The wine was amazing I had the pinot and my friends had the sangria (which they were crazy for). The staff was friendly and seemed on top of everything. The food was not what I expected but running hare didn't cook it, they have caters come. My boyfriend and I later came for a wine tasting, it was still cold out so we didn't get to experience the outdoor area (which seems like a good time). The woman who was serving us was great! Funny and made us feel very comfortable. We felt a bit awkward walking inside since no one else was there, not the case with the outdoor. I went there to pick up a few bottles of wine since we had family coming in from out of town and there were about three different groups of people sitting around having a good time in the outdoor area. If your in the area I would defiantly recommend checking it out. read more

We had a great experience at Perigeaux Winery nearby so I decided to try another Patuxent Wine Trail winery. The wine was fine (although not many are made with estate grown wines) but this was one of the least kid-friendly Maryland wineries I've been to. It has a nice patio, but a small field, so there is nowhere for the kids to run around. The woman charging admission at the gate said "that's what babysitters are for" when I came in with my kids. Tried their wine again at the Taste of Solomon's again very unfriendly and was too concerned about gossiping then wanting to help customers. I went to the winery and it was much improved, so I wanted to give them another chance at redemption. I was at running hare winery with Susan B. this afternoon when I saw this small rock at the bottom of her glass of pinot grigio. The rock was large and solid enough to crack a tooth. I took the bottle and rock to the counter to complain. I had paid $20 in cover charges and $26 for a bottle of wine. All I got was a simple sorry and a scientific explanation why. Did I get a free bottle of wine? No. A free glass of wine? No. Nothing. I have never paid any cover charge at a winery. Almost always when served an inferior product, the server makes up for it. The winery imports most of its grapes from outside maryland. Running Hare is the worst winery I have ever attended. Never going back!!! read more

Running Hare vineyard is one of the most beautiful vineyards we have seen in Maryland. The location is central to St Charles and Calvert counties. Once you turn onto the property its quite a drive ip the driveway; scenic and rustic views. It starts out on a narrow paved road with alot of pot holes then turns into gravel. So dont bring your pleasure vehicle (corvette) or something unless it needs a good bath. They have a good selection of wines from sweet, tart, and dry. Not a wine drinker? No problem! They have craft beer tasting as well. Try the Wye Rye its amazing! Not a drinker? Every weekend they feature a local artist every weekend and always have a local food truck. You bring your own food (picnic) baskets and sit under an umbrella table and chairs. Beat advice-get there a few minutes before they open because it gets filled up fast! read more

This breaks my heart to give such a low rating to my favorite vineyard in Southern Maryland, however, this is justified ONLY because of the horrendous customer service on November 10. I visit Running Hare annually to get my favorite supply of Jack Rabbit Red, Zinfandel and Merlot. But this year I sadly left with an empty case. It was a cold, windy day and we arrived ready to load up for the winter. My daughter, who belongs to the VIP club was ready to make her pick up as well. First, the heaters weren't on to give a more pleasant experience. Then we stood at the VIP area for 10 minutes before either of the two women behind the tasting area, even glanced our way. When one of them did, it was only to say..the VIP area is closed. In the meantime, while we were waiting another VIP was also waiting in the same area, so we walked over to the tasting area, only to be ignored there. Finally, one of the women came over to ask what we wanted, and both VIP members were there for pick up. But guess what, the Zinfandel had labeling problems, then the Merlot was out and Kim was going to bring it down from the house in "about 30 minutes or so." The other VIP was at this time livid, as she had called ahead to have her order ready for pick up and it was not ready and the wines she had ordered were neither ready nor available. At this point, I knew my daughter's wine was ready nor was I going to get any to bring back...because...as all this no bottle drama was going on, the people at the tasting area were getting all the attention and the woman we were speaking to kept filling up their glasses and giving them the VIP treatment. After 35 minutes we had to leave as we were frozen and no wine to keep us waiting any longer. Customer service is always the key to survival in any business, but common courtesy is just as necessary. The VIP members should be given what they pay premium money for. But it appears, Running Hare is apparently more interested in the 10.00 tasters than the customer that drives hundreds of miles and gives hundreds of dollars to support a local vineyard. It's really going to take a memory reset to get me back here. read more

In my opinion, this is absolutely the WORSE wine I have ever tasted at a vineyard. Sure Boone's Farm and Apple were bad, but this wine for myself and our party, was undrinkable. I was at an event and we switched to liquor due to the taste. The setting is nice but certainly below average for destination weddings compared to vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley. read more

Went recently (yes, during the winter) and the young woman who helped us sample wine was wonderful, even with a baby on her arm! The wine tasted unique and the venue still looked wonderful despite the weather. The only complaint we had was finding the venue, as well as navigating the slim, one laned, country road to and from. If this venue was able to invest in a better, larger road to the venue, they would be unstoppable! read more

The worst experience/costumer service ever in any winery in the DC area we have been to. After getting to this winery in around 4/4:15 pm on a beautiful Saturday (yesterday) we purchased our beer and wine tastings, a big beer growler, two hand made pizzas and two bottle of wine which totaled to more than a $100 for two people (plus a generous tip to the staff); an hour and a half later, a staff member comes by to inform us that we need to leave in 15 minutes due to an event where they had this band coming (P.S: nobody told us about this when we were swiping our cards on their premises) and that if we needed to stay and finish what we just purchased, we needed to get tix for $18 each, she then asked if I wanted to speak to her manager, who also came in a hurry and mimicked the same, the owner himself was passing by and she grabbed him telling him that we "REFUSED" to leave which was very condescending when all we wanted is to get is a rational explanation and finish our bottle and leave. Then, not only the owner (like a recorded message) just repeated what they said) but started messing up with the umbrella on our table shining the sunlight on our faces, basically saying to F off!!!! Working in the industry for over 10 years, I have never witnessed such poor costumer service nor way to run a business.... So disappointed. As for the event and people that purchased the tix to see the mediocre band that they had last night, I am not exaggerating, every single person or group were bringing in their own wines, beers and food; when we were spending our money and just trying to have a good time..... Running Hare, people I tell you, run away and don't look back. There are plenty beautiful wineries in the area that deserve you being there instead of this poorly run establishment they are calling a winery Disappointed costumer. read more

Would recommend visiting in spring/summer, as we made the trek on a snowy Sunday and they have a very scenic long driveway that was a bit treacherous. Once we got to their tasting room, was treated to live music, and could partake of a beer tasting in one corner or a wine tasting at the bar. We did the wine tasting, about 8 in all or so, variety of both dry and sweet. We especially liked the Chardonnay, a glass $7. Bottles were reasonably priced at $20-25/ea. Interesting, they source almost all their grapes from other places - Washington State, California, Chile, etc. so be prepared they're not local varietals. Many had smart idea of bringing games and picnic's, is a very large tasting room with plenty of large tables. Most were visiting for wedding consultations. Enjoyable visit. read more

Although this tries to be a vineyard, a great attempt I must say- This can not hold a candle to VA vineyards. The cost just to rent the building is outrageous for SoMd!!!! And there is no bridal or groom suites to get ready. Now if you rent the venue, don't even worry about their "exclusive caterer", MD Country Caterers.-- Out of this world with the basic menu. I hope you like $80 chicken and potatoes. The ambiance is cool, great views. Not at all worth the cost yet- so many more affordable venues in SoMd. Keep looking! Wines are expensive and subpar. I am just confused on what you pay for really, needs a bit more character and services for weddings for the cost. read more

I regularly head down to the wine tasting at Running Hare on the weekends to decompress from my week and enjoy some quiet time with my fiancé. We pack up a picnic lunch and spend the day drinking wonderful wines while listening to live music. This place has become very special to both of us and is our escape from reality.
