This place was recommended by a friend so I took the family there for Sunday lunch.
It was well worth it. Converted from a terrace house it's not very large but has a very cosy feel and is very nicely set out with smart decor, cool interactive screens for the kids to amuse themselves and a neat coffee bar counter. There is a different menu dependent on when you go or what you are after. Sunday lunch was fairly traditional for the main - a selection of beef, pork, lamb or vegetarian options with a table full of steaming hot vegetables and roast spuds. Lovely creamy mash and deeply flavoured cauliflower cheese were on the side. Needless to say we found it impossible to finish our main course. We all had the delicious deep-fried Calamari as a starter - despite this being a simple dish so many places get it wrong but here it was absolutely spot on with lovely tender squid and tangy aioli.
Only one of us braved dessert but that turned out to be a perfectly cooked chocolate fondant with home made ice cream and a 'white chocolate pencil'. It was delicious. We also had tea and coffee. Espresso is easy enough but the Earl Grey tea came in proper fashion with separate dishes for everything and served in a charming pumpkin shaped tea set. That makes such a difference and my party were delighted at the extra touch.
The final thing to mention is the team running the place. Super-friendly, funny and highly attentive. I didn't start our visit well by knocking over a vase of flowers on the counter, but they didn't seem even vaguely bothered. What's more when we asked where they sourced the Gloucester 'old spot' pork they knew exactly and told as all about the producer they use. Brownie point! We had a really nice time and made a note to return in the future.
Because of the lack of space I would recommend booking if you are in a largish group. There were 5 of us and if we'd just turned up I suspect it wouldn't have been quite so smooth, but a phone call the night before had our table waiting on our arrival. read more
