Elizabeth is always nice to me, and has gotten me to start going back to gyms after a 2 year hiatus to pursue calisthenics. When Shakespeare wrote of the transcendental beauty of Olivia in Twelfth Night, it was highly likely the mental image he conjured up was that of Elizabeth. I get sad when I don't get to see Elizabeth. In fact, the customer service she has provided has been second to none. If I was an employer, I would model my entire employee training structure around how well she handles customers. Frankly, I would be surprised if Elizabeth did not find herself rapidly ascending the ranks of MNP and taking on a very high level position. It would be a discredit to MNP if that did not happen. Elizabeth is absolutely 100% amazing. The GOAT. I think Michael Jordan writes Elizabeth fan mail. I could go on. But I won't. But I could. You get the picture. You BETTER get the picture. Elizabeth -- you are the freaking coolest, and if you read this I hope you know that seeing you really is a highlight of my week.

While stretching is important, 30 mins is excessive for something I can do at home. It was overwhelming as I was a beginner and did not expect to go straight into sparring my first class. It would have been nice to have been eased into sparring after at least a few beginner sessions. It's not fun being a punching bag. If I go back it will probably be for the BJJ, and not Muay Thai. I hear the BJJ is great over there.

First impressions of the gym was that it is pretty small but clean. There are gloves for visitors to use. The class before the one I attended probably had around 20 students and it looked very cramped. The class I attended had about 10 and it was definitely more manageable with space. The instructor, Gabe, was nice and clearly had great technique. I wish there was more feedback during the class but I understand that there was ~10 students so it's impossible to give a lot of personal feedback but I wish there was just a bit more. I would like to visit one more time to check out the advanced class to see if there is more focus on technique.

If you know what you are doing at a gym and have your own plan, this location is probably good for you. There is a lot of parking and its easy to get to. The waste bins are sometimes overflowing despite a lot of people working there but otherwise things are fairly clean. Do not....I repeat....do not....invest in their LifeChanger analysis or personal training. My "LifeChanger" analysis was actually point blank wrong in several spots, which I pointed out and they did nothing to address it. They have a "special scale" that measures body fat, weight and more and it was off by over 10lbs (even against other scales in their change rooms). The report is designed to make you feel negative about your health, regardless of your fitness regime coming in. I think it's a tool they use to further push their personal training. And let's talk about that. I bought a three session intro package. I am not new to working out and I was clear on what I was looking for out of the package. My trainer, while friendly, was clearly being driven by some sort of corporate sale mandate. When I politely declined to purchase more sessions giving my exact reasons as to why, he kept spewing sales pitches at me. To the point of being offensive and discouraging. Basically I wasn't committed to my health unless I spent thousands a year on their packages. Because people aren't successful if they work out on their own? Seriously. I did learn a couple of good exercises from the trainer but it certainly didn't offset the bad feelings and pushiness I encountered. I know it wasn't the trainer - he was just doing what was corporately expected of him. I brought my concerns to GoodLife and was told I'd receive a call. That hasn't happened yet. Fitness is and health important and they way they treated me as a new member makes me sad for people who might be discouraged and disheartened by their tactics and stop trying to better themselves. I can handle a sales pitch - they just need to know when to back off and not affect the existing business relationship

Strangely, there are no reviews for this Goodlife location, and only one review for the city…read more Typically, chain-gyms can attract a lot of attention on review sites. That being said, if you are interested in shopping around for a club, and are considering Goodlife, Google for all the information you can and make an informed decision. I can only review what I have personally experienced. Pros and Cons I'll start with the good: This is a modern location featuring top of the line, new equipment. There is an emphasis on keeping the equipment in top shape, and I've noted this location just replaced all the bikes for its spinning classes. This is a nice touch - many gyms take in the 2nd or 3rd hand gear offloaded from clubs like this one. Some older gear isn't even ergonomically correct, and can lead to serious injury. Example: the old school Smith Machine. Sadly, that equipment typically ends up being used somewhere. Physically, the floor space of this gym is quite large, and includes a daycare, a smoothie bar, and dedicated personal training & women's only sections. During the core hours, fitness class schedules are running pretty much around the clock, with the usual range of strength/cardio/stretching. The gym is not typically that busy in the later evenings, and this location is now open 24 hours a day (Mon-Friday) to further ease the load. That's great for shift-workers or those who want to go for a jog at 2AM (?). Monthly pricing was pretty competitive when I joined, and did play a factor in my decision at the time. Generally speaking, the physical location & space, equipment, and services, all cover my basic requirements. Gym-time isn't a social event for me. I simply want to go work out, then get out. This place serves its purpose. Now the negatives: 1) Contracts. Goodlife still has them. Generically speaking, I have decided that, going forward, I will no longer sign a contract with a gym. Month to month, or prepaying a set period--such as 3 months--works for me. To me, contracts are a pretty questionable requirement. Not everyone's life is 100% consistent year by year. Lost your job? Found a better gym? Need to relocate? If you DO need to break one, you can expect anything from additional fees, to phone calls from a collections agency. That means negative online feedback, and I can't see that being worth it from any gym's perspective. Instead, I would much rather a gym focus entirely on keeping the customer happy from one month to the next, so they never want to leave (unless life dictates it). 2) Second: payment options. I was told I could only do automatic withdrawals from my checking account. Many people do not approve of this practice, so it can be make or break for some. Personally, I have not had any issues, so I'll restrain myself, but it's a topic you can spend some more time Googling on to get up to speed. Its important to understand what early termination means for contracts as well as personal training plans that you agreed to, then bailed out of. 3) Pricing is reasonable, but they would definitely love to sell additional services like personal training/fitness classes. This is where the real margins are. Some gyms will bundle some of these services with your base fees, so ensure you are comparing apples to apples. 4) Finally, the evenings could use more "maintenance staff" at times. In Summary: many physical positives about this place. Contracts and payment methods knock off a couple of stars, but I'd have no issue adding them back on IF these two things were corrected.

If this gym were not so inconveniently located for those coming from downtown after work, I'd…read moreprobably still be going. I've only tried the CrossFit classes here, but they also offer various martial arts such as Muay Thai and Brazilian Jujitsu. The facility is divided between a very large floor mat sparring area, a full sized fighting octagon, and a functional fitness area for CrossFit (pull up bars, barbell racks, jumping boxes, etc.). The men's "change room" consists of a small semi-closed off cluster of lockers in the main gym area. The women have an actual room. Being located in an industrial park, there is plenty for parking. The CrossFit classes at this location differ from the others I have tried insofar as they tend to be consistently focused on constant high rep, high intensity intuitive exercises (e.g. box jumps, kipping pull ups, push up pyramids, crunches) and a few barbell moves. This is in contrast to some other CrossFits where you can spend a significant portion of a class working on developing a particular "functional" movement like a headstand, barbell combos, or some kettle bell manoeuvre. If you're looking for an efficient calorie burning, stamina building workout class you can dive into without much of a learning curve, try this place.

The step class was great! It wasn't too crowded so I had tons of space and they also provided towels. Being a beginner, I totally thought I would miss many steps but the instructor gave great instructions which were easy to follow. Overall, the staff here are friendly and helpful - especially the girl at the front desk who, when I was asking about membership, asked how old I was?!?!?! I'm well past the age of 18 which is an adult memebership! lol. I guess I coulda gotten a teen membership?!?! The building is connected right beside the Calgary Public Library. It's clean and nice & separated into two floors. They have all the usuals here. A pool, a fitness area, a weight circuit, stretch area, & gym. The locker room is fairly long with ample lockers for usage. They provide locks too! If you need a lock, make sure you get one at the entrance gate (they'll ask for a card with your name on it to hold it). There are a LOT of machines upstairs in the fitness/weight area. The machines are newer and fancy with lots of variety. I even saw one that simulated moving uphill on cross country ski's - it was cool. I was there at 10am and it was BUSY! For the busier weight machines, I had to wait my turn.... which was kinda awkward since the machines are kinda close together with only room between them for traffic flow, so I felt like I was in the way of traffic while waiting. One last thing... they provide 'wet wipes' for you to clean the equipment after your usage which makes me happy cuz I know that they care about not spreading germs. =)
