So, my friends and I went for a day party and had a blast! For it to be located down town and for the crowd to be pretty big that day, it was not hard to find parking. It was also spacious. The DJ was off the chain that day. He played a good mix of old and new school jam! Everyone was on the dance floor having a great time. Just when you thought you were headed to you seat...BAM! This place is so fun! I did not know what to really expect coming to this place. Is it like ballroom classes or like a bar? Well this place is like a Hispanic honk tonk. I love it! So, I came in early because I wanted to take free bachata lessons. I walked in and didn't have to pay a cover, but I also arrived early (9ish). Then I got a mojito from the bar, and the mojito is around averagely priced ($8). The mojito was so good tho. The bartenders are obviously trained. I was mislead tho when I was reading about the events online and on Saturdays it says "first shot on the house free for men. Women are free all night." Now I thought that meant that women get free drinks all night, but that's not the case. We just get free cover all night, which I think every bar should do all the time. More ladies= more men buying drinks. Anyways, I joined the bachata lessons and the instructor was so good. He taught us the steps with everyone by oneself, and then he paired everyone up and the women rotated after learning an extra step. The atmosphere there is so relaxing because everyone dances with everyone, and it's not nerve wrecking to ask someone to dance or to dance with someone random. Lastly, this place could use a nice little renovation, because the dance floor does not match the bar. The bar uses bright lights and looks new, but the dance floor area looks old and used with its tables and random elevated surfaces that have couches on top, but no way to get up there. I so want to learn to salsa dance! Rumba Room is the only salsa club in Memphis that I know of, and Latin culture is their specialty. I dropped in for some food and dined on the Baja shrimp tacos- yum! Shrimp and bacon wrapped in a flour tortilla with melted cheese. I don't believe I've ever had bacon on a taco, but in my opinion, bacon makes everything better. It was so fun to watch the live salsa bands, and see experts at work. The crowd can move! I came here for one of their events and had a great time. I didn't get any food here but I might next time. My friend noted that their drinks were pretty watered down. This place does not have any kind of minimum purchasing for when you see their shows, which I now can say I greatly appreciate. I would come back here for another event if one I was interested in came up. I wouldn't mind coming here to dance, too, if I decided I wanted to dance. I thought there was another Rumba Room elsewhere or at least another place that does Latino dancing. Everyone sure knows how to dance in here. Made me nervous to even try since everyone looked like professionals here. But fear not because everyone is so nice & will keep trying to ask you to dance with them. Even teach you. I think some are paid to do that, which is nice for the people who came solo w/ no partners. Ladies no worries, this is not the kind of place you'll get annoyed w/ people hitting on you. People seriously just want to dance. All the staff willing to help you learn to dance were all amazing & so fun to watch. Only gripe here was the bouncer or whoever the person in the front was. He was so rude to some of my friends & literally was demanding to pay up that $10 entrance fee that night. They were only asking if they had a night where ladies were free to get in, & he was just pushy & straight up rude. We almost didn't go in because of him. Thank goodness we didn't let that one bummer get to us because we would've missed out on some fun times. On another plus side, the appetizers my girlfriends & I got to taste were good. Great place for salsa dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. It's normal dancing on 2, and you'll find a range of dancers from beginner to competitors. The crowd is a great mix, the music is good, and there is plenty of room on the dance floor. They play ~70% salsa, 20% meringue, 8% cumbia, 2% cha-cha as far as I could tell. It was a well decor room. Love the lights, dance floor maybe add a pool instead of couches on top by the stage. Not a fan of the Dj on Friday. The DJ was creating his own bachata music which didn't sound right. Was not impressed with the mint mojito. Too much mint, i think they put a whole tree in my one drink and a whole lime. I asked to get a new one and the bartender said that's how they make it but she was willing to make me a new one. Went out to this venue for a special concert of Karen Brown. She provided an awesome show down to the DJ. I love an intimate venue for concerts so this definitely fit the bill. The service was pretty good given the limited number of servers and no complaints on the drinks. The opening DJ was really good for getting the crowd ready for a great show and the main act did not disappoint. I would definitely prefer a table next time but this is a pretty cool place to catch a show. read more

Was invited to return with friends 6 months after my review. Date visited Friday 10/22/10. MUCH IMPROVED! It was a real Salsa night. They did great. First it was a swing lesson at 7pm. Then there was the salsa lesson at about 9:30. Then the dance floor opened at about 9:50-10:00 pm. The music was about 1/2 dj and 1/2 live latin band. Food was decent. Tacos were very good. Four stars. I have to dock one star because of the climate. It was ice cold AC or very hot (no A/C). read more

MY FAVORITE SALSA CLUB EVER!!!!! HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!! My first trip to the Rumba Room was actually on a Thursday (Recess-Is-On) Night, and Marsha Ambrosius was doing a set. OMG her voice is even more magnificent in person than on cd, if you know anything about Marsha Ambrosius you know even on cd she is beyond talented. Nevertheless, on that night I was impressed by the decor, the drinks, the ambience. SN: The bathrooms were the cleanest that I've ever used in a club...Ever!!! Salsa Night Friday/Saturdays Ladies get in free until 10pm. And if your late it a $10 cover (well worth it). They also offer free Salsa lesson before the dancing gets started! I've had the Southwestern Rolls they are always good, and just a lil spicy! And the tangy wings, I was mad hungry so they hit the spot!! The bar food is pretty cheap, but good! The drinks are very very nice!! The have my all-time favorite, the Walk-Me Down (Sweet Jesus)! Next behind that is their drink called "The Leg Spreader" although I felt a lil cheeky when I was ordering this drink, I definitely wasn't sorry that I did!!! I love this place. The salsa instructor is really good. Im really nervous about dancing with people i dont know, but i felt super comfortable dancing with him. I think its because he's a really great teacher, and really easy to follow. The food is not bad, and the drinks are good. Its lady night on friday nights, so no cover charge. You can take swing lessons and salsa lessons on fridays. I have not yet been there early enough for the swing lessons, but would love to. This wasn't the night for salsa dancing, but for listening to a band on a Wednesday night it was superb. The place was very clean with an attentive bar staff and all staff, overall, made me feel very welcome. We recently moved to the Memphis area. Visited Rumba Room, this past Friday for some Latin Food. They did not have everything available from their menu, I ended up ordering something different. A dish I did not want. The food was NOT so Latin!. We had to paid $10:00 to get in besides our food's bill. DJ was overlapping songs, while people dancing salsa. Music was good, but kind of old. We left because it was too hot. My girlfriend and I went for dinner at Los Compadres the next day. And their food is a lot much delicious and they have also a DJ playing more modern Latin Music. It's free to get in and on top that they have a parking lot available. I've experienced better!. read more

Out of all the venues that have come and gone, it is the first official Latin dance club in Memphis that offers a quality hardwood floor and upscale atmosphere for almost 7 years now. This establishment attracts a crowd of all ages, professions, and cultures of people interested in having a great night of dancing, drinks, music, and entertainment among excellent company. They have an extensive drink menu including signature drinks like the Rumba Shooter, refreshing Mojitos made with fresh limes and mint leaves, and your typical favorite mixed or single liquor drinks. They have a great rotation of outstanding local and guest DJs spinning new and classic salsa, merengue, bachata, cha-cha, cumbia, and reggaeton hits.
