Went here for lunch on a Saturday, since we needed some spice to clear up a cold and we have been wanting to try this place for a while. There was one other group sitting in the restaurant and in the time we were there some pickup orders. Shockingly to us, there was only one person working, but she was efficient. Took a little longer to get the food, but it was definitely hot & fresh. By the time we got our food, we were the only ones there, so we got to talk with the owner, who is from just outside New Orleans. She was super friendly and told us about her style to making the dishes; was fun to hear her story. As for the food, we got a variety with the Voodoo egg rolls, fried okra, New Orleans spiced jambalaya, and crawfish etoufee. The egg rolls were fun to try. They were stuffed with cheese and had pieces of fish and sausage. Not sure if I need to get them again, but worth a try. They also came with a dipping sauce, which actually worked great with the fried okra. The okra was really good with a light cornmeal batter that gave it just enough crispness to the soft interior. The etoufee and jambalaya were both very flavorful. We got the jambalaya the most spicy, New Orleans spice, and it packed a little heat. Just what I needed to clear out a cold. As a person who likes spice, this was pretty good. We've been searching for a good Cajun restaurant since New Orleans Takeout left, and this might be the new go to. They have a short menu, with pretty tasty food, and good prices. Try em out. read more

I love supporting woman-owned businesses and also love Cajun food so I was so excited to try Rue Bourre. It's in the building behind the Pizza Hut on Cottage Grove Road and a little hard to find since they are limited in how they can do their signage, but once you find it there's plenty of parking in the huge lot. The menu is limited since it's just the owner, but she knows what she's doing! The voodoo egg rolls are to die for and the chicken jambalaya I had was so good, and so filling! My friend had the gumbo and said it was amazing as well. Most people order to go but there are two small tables and a few chairs at the counter if you want to dine in. It would be nice to sit outside during the warmer months as well. I attached a photo of the current menu, although it changes depending on certain daily specials and ingredient availability. The owner was making king cakes for Mardi Gras and we were lucky enough to score a freshly-baked piece. It was so delicious and still a little warm inside which was a pleasant surprise. I'd never had it before but was excited to learn about it. The owner described it as a giant cinnamon roll and I agree, plus a layer of cream cheese in the middle. I definitely want to go back sometime for their morning menu, and will definitely be back for the rest of the menu as well. I don't think you can find quality Cajun food for this price anywhere in Madison! read more

If I wanted yesterday's bakery goods, I'd might've thought to buy some then. Stale Beignet are hardly ever as good as the fresh ones most places offer. In NOLA they were so good, stopped for some a week or two back and the only thing they were offering were what would pass for day old but at full price. I certainly didn't stop in for a bargain basement treat, if I wanted that I'd go to the convenience store or Pick n Save. Lackadaisical is the best descriptors I'd give when waiting on the millennial worker buried in some social media importance. Faux French? Maybe I'm still considering what the word for I'd like when describing the interior, it should be one that is ok for the public to see and not be offensive. The maga party affiliation and anti choice, anti French (thinking Canada here) sentiment was far worse than their attempt at bakery. Fakery was a word that came to mind. read more

We stopped by for beignets and coffee. (Stellar beignets served steaming hot at the counter.) Limited menu but it's beignet all day, baby. Hot strong chicory coffee and you are set on a chilly afternoon. It's in the old Subway space but feels much more spacious. We will be back for biscuits and gravy (morning) and jambalaya (lunch/dinner). Service was excellent - eat local! read more

The most rude, racist people I've ever met. Went to their booth during farmers market. Ordered 2 boudin balls, $4 a piece. Took 40 minutes to cook. Ignored me when I asked questions, burnt my food, didn't apologize. When I asked if it came with a sauce, ignored me again and rudely asked me do you want sauce? Asked them what the problem was? Are they racist towards Asians? Female working said yes. Quickly responded afterwards wait, no. Yeah okay, 0/5, do not support this place. Tossed in trash. My boyfriend and I were greeted right once we walked in; the owner was very kind and attentive. The food is made to order so it came out fresh and hot! There are a few tables and a small kitchen bar area to sit at. We sat at one of the tables and enjoyed our food at the restaurant. We saw this restaurant on the news and thought we would give it a try. We also love to support small business owners. We stopped in to this small strip mall cafe around 3:30pm, and there was one other person waiting. The decor is minimal but New Orleans festive. I'm a bit fussy when it comes to windows and doors being clear from streaks, so my only advice would be to make sure to keep them clean as a first impression. We ordered take out, including some ready to eat options, as well as some frozen items. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable. Of the ready to eat options, my favorites were the Voodoo Egg Rolls and the Crab Cakes. Both excellent in taste and executed well. We also enjoyed the Chicken Jambalaya and Chicken Gumbo when we got home. Both solid in taste, though the Jambalaya rice wasn't quite done, so it was a bit crunchy. Of the frozen foods, I really enjoyed the Shrimp and Grits. I was surprised that she used the tiny shrimp, but it worked well and the flavors were good, considering it had been frozen and reheated in the microwave. If you're looking for some decent New Orleans fare, give it a try! And make sure to get the pralines for desert! read more
