I was like to check out local stores that seem different and this certainly is unique to me. Upon entering and noticing the freshly made items available for dine in or carry out and the incredible prices I was amazed. The variety of imported treats was also quite fun. I always make it a point to stop at Hy-Vee for some beers to bring home. This last visit, I discovered many old beers sitting on the shelves, so I purchased less than I normally do from previous visits. Check your dates if you are buying IPA's is my only tip. Attached store is a great market and the people on both sides are always super friendly, so this scores an "A-OK" with me. read more

Way better than you might expect Hy-Vee Market Grille is located in, but separate from, the East Side Hy-Vee Grocery Store Unlike your old school Hy-Vee cafes, which honestly are usually .... straight out of the 60's?, the Market "Grille" is comfortably nice, with tons of TV's, a real bar, and decent, if somewhat generic food. You can eat from the buffet, or order off the menu. And, you can get a beer, glass of wine, or a mixed drink, all at stupid low prices. I mean, $2 draft beer in a place with a bunch of flat screen tv"s? Wine specials? Craft Beer specials? It may not have the cachet of all the in places in Madison, and is hopelessly redneck for most Madisonians, but its comfortable and cheap. The food is...ok. Ordering off the menu will get a well prepared meal cheap, and the buffet is...better than some. It's not awesome, but it is ok. Plenty of fresh fruit, ok deserts, decent buffet. And beverages (well, not the booze) comes with the price of the meal! $4.99 for eggs, toast and hashbrowns, and got 2 large glasses of OJ - score. Some places would charge you $5 for the juice. Having eaten in a number of older Hy-Vee cafes, I was not expecting much, and I got more. read more

I frequent the Hy-Vees and I eat from the hot food section as well. My friends talked up the Breakfast Buffet so I figured I would try it. There was a great aroma and the visually, it looked tasty. I had the scrambled eggs, grits, sausage patties, bacon, french toasts sticks, biscuits and gravy, fruit. The food tasted ok. The eggs were bland and the bacon was overcooked. The biscuits were really hard, but the gravy did its job and softened the biscuit with its smooth and rich flavor. I enjoyed the customer service and speedy wait staff in assisting and meeting the needs of my party(with two toddlers). The service alone warrants 2 stars. read more

The Market Grille (or Market Cafe as it is displayed on the doors) is always a convenient option for us. The nights where you are not sure what to make at home usually end up in wandering the aisles of Hy-Vee, and a few times we have ended up sitting in the Grille's booths. The food is nothing spectacular. Typically there are offerings available from the "to-go" counters in the store in addition to the brief menu. There is always the "burger of the month" option which has always been a larger than fair portion which doesn't fail to please. We were fortunate enough to be there while the "Grand Buffet" was available. Everything on the floor (pizza, Chinese, deli counter, etc.) was available for $11.99. Not a bad deal when it includes a beverage. The little one was allowed to graze off of our plates without paying for his own. All-in-all, the Grille reminds me of a truck stop. The staff is partial to regulars, and even at that the service is slow. Almost seems like the "management" is treating the operation like a 5-star joint while the service realizes they are working in a grocery store. Hy-Vee catered my wedding. Yes, you heard that right! We had an open vendor policy and we needed to save money where we could. I've had company lunches catered through Hy-Vee and they've always delivered delicious food. For only $16/plate - it was a steal. My biggest complaint was that real china and silverware were not included in the price (however you can add them on for an additional charge.) We decided on buffet style and paid extra for two lines to get our 200 guests through as quickly as possible. The food was good and most importantly- warm! Jeff is the man. I don't think anyone would have the balls to complain to the bride about her wedding food, but it's been a few a weeks and I still haven't heard any negative chatter about it. My husband and I have given this place so many chances, and each time we leave feeling disappointed and usually sick to our stomachs. First, the layout is unclear and confusing. You are able to order from the different stations (Italian, Asian, Homecooked, or Salad Bar) out front in the grocery shopping area, and instead of taking your hot meal to the dining area to sit down and eat, you have to find and wait at the cash register hidden in the corner near the Asian station for an employee to come ring you up, and by then you're lucky if your food isn't cold. I ordered from the Asian station. The options here looked pretty terrible and unappetizing, so admittedly, I probably should have known better and ordered from a different station (which would have had to be the Homecooking station, as the Italian station and salad bar were both closed), but having been hungry for Chinese, I was hoping the food would taste better than it looked. I was so wrong. It actually tasted worse than it looked. The sesame chicken did not taste right, and when I bit into the pieces, I usually discovered it was all fat chunks covered in sauce instead of chicken. Additionally, the sauce had a weird gooey/jelly-like texture and did not taste right at all. I decided to fill up on the lo-mein noodles which were not flavorful, but were at least edible. I ended up getting sick a few hours after eating here, and considering the poor quality and weird texture of the food, I was kind of expecting to. My husband ordered from the Homecooking station and was pleased with the friend chicken and mac and cheese, but the potatoes were lumpy and dinner roll had a weird look and taste. The employees here were unfriendly and slow. We had to wait over 5 minutes at the cash register for an employee to come ring us up so we could go eat in the dining area. There was no bell or anything to get anyone's attention. We later discovered the employee was inside the dining area, at the bar, watching a football game and not watching the register for customers. I do like the feel of the dining area. They have tables and booths, along with a bar area, and there is plenty of seating. They also have lots of televisions around the area. You fill your beverages up at the soda fountain yourself and since they come in a plastic cup, you're able to take them with you when you leave. If it wasn't for the low quality of the food and unfriendly employees, this place could have hope, but after having bad experience after bad experience here, I think we've dined here for the last time. read more

Waitstaff treated us like we were stealing because we put more then one plate on our tray at the salad bar. But the sign has an all you can eat price so that's what we were going. Went out of her way to tell uswe could not take some home, duh. Rude, slow service. The lettuce was rancid and when I asked for an item to be refilled on the salad bar because it was empty the worker said "ok but it will be a while" in a snotty voice and moved at snail speed. I will not be back. Don't make your customers feel like they did something wrong just for being customers. Left feeling terrible. read more

My wife and I needed a caterer for our wedding and heard mixed feedback about several of the local options. We weren't feeling confident in any of them until we found out that Hy-Vee caters events. Having enjoyed the food at the East Side Hy-Vee restaurant a number of times, we thought it would be a great option. We scheduled a consultation with Chef Renee and were able to try a variety of dishes. Renee was friendly and incredibly candid, suggesting certain options that would stay fresh longer than others when left out for a while. We told Renee we had a number of dietary restrictions, including severe food allergies, and she promptly provided us with detailed information on the menu. She also introduced us to Sue and the rest of the team at the bakery, who provided us with delicious desserts. We even ordered our bridal bouquet and other flowers from the floral department, and the arrangements were perfect. The food, staff, and delivery fees were very reasonable, and everyone loved the meal. We highly recommend Hy-Vee for any catering event and certainly for a wedding! read more

Fifteen-dollar cobb salad - totally not worth $15. The greens look like they're a week old, bacon is soggy, avocado is sad, chicken is dry and tough. Very disappointed. Maybe it's better in person - I ordered mine online and picked up for takeout. I'm sure they're better at the less healthy selections like sandwiches and burgers. read more

A little confusing for a newbie here. Was I supposed to bring in items from the buffet in to-go items or ask for a plate? Pay in the grocery store area or somehow get a bill at the table? Anyhoo, we figured it out while simultaneously playing trivia. Any place that hosts trivia is an automatic A-OK to me. Not huge competition at this place, perhaps 7-10 teams? One of the teams had literally 20 people, though they didn't place. How it actually worked was that one of our diners got a ceramic plate of 1 item Chinese Buffet for $7.99 and I got a ceramic plate of 1 piece fried chicken with two sides for $7.99. The buffet servers knew to give us pink slips to bring into the restaurant. We ditched the plastic-ware and plastic trays, instead using read silverware and the tables. Waitstaff was extremely friendly, checking on us a number of times. Happy hour draught beer is $2; the bar area was pretty nice. I would sit there next time if not playing trivia. read more

This was my first time eating at the Market Grille's Saturday Breakfast Buffet. It was really disappointing after hearing about the quality from other reviews. I tried it at the East Madison HyVee which was first one in Madison and therefore the oldest of the three in the area. Reports from the newer stores were fine but based on today's experience, the quality and service from this store is quite awful. I have had other items from the deli before and it was fine but the breakfast "buffet" portion of it was a wreck. There were 2 of us that arrived at 9:30am for a buffet open from 7am-12pm. The selection would have been good IF it was replenished and filled regularly. The eggs had been sitting a while because the top bits and cheese were dry and crusty. There were plenty of potato dishes (4 dishes) and meats (4 varieties) however, the pancakes and french toast sticks were a mess. The pancakes had been sitting out for so long that the sections touching the heated pan was hard. I took 1 pancake and had difficulty cutting off the dry, crusty section. Next, I tried the french toast sticks. They were sitting so long, it was hard and I could not bite into them. I took 4 sticks and got 3 bites total between all of them. My friend took the last biscuit when we got there at 9:30 and I thought they would refill while we ate. 45 minutes later when I went back up, nothing was refilled. I finally found a worker and asked him when things would get added to the breakfast bar. It took another 15-20 minutes to add biscuits. When I asked again about adding more food, I was told that biscuits were already added but I said thats NOT the only thing that needs refreshing: the eggs are crusty, the pancakes are hard and the french toast sticks are inedible. By this point, we had been in the store for over an hour and tired of picking at dry, old food. We left. It was really disappointing. I will still recommend the Italian, Chinese and American deli foods but the breakfast buffet may not be a good choice for next time. read more
