Total Dive! I love places like this! I went one night with friends, we had already been drinking...and pretty happy right now. We came in and played darts and pool...it was hilarious because when we were going up to get more drinks there was this strange people picking up on people...well soon they started picking up on my friend...come to find out they are swingers!!!! I, along with many others, love this place. When it's 115 degrees in the valley we take the harley's down for a cruise. Drops about 30 degrees once you hit this bar. But when the sun pokes through it's beautiful. Hop off the bikes for a drink on the beach. The food is pretty excellent as well. You have to try their garlic fries. Wow! If there were a negative*, it would be -3. Because it's a dive bar doesn't bother me, as a matter of fact, I enjoy those type of places. However this place has the most rudest bartenders and staff I have ever met. It's a shame to have such a gold mine on the beach yet no appreciation for it. I hope the owner of this bar is reading this because this rudeness has to change. read more

This place is a dump that caters to the local drunks. Upon entering there's an overwhelming smell of urine. The "bartenders" are rude and more concerned about filling their own glass before serving waiting patrons, not to mention, quality of service is based on your skin color. read more

BEST DIVE BAR EVER! The only place between Malibu and Santa Barbara where you can physically (and legally) sit on the beach with a drink. Don't expect a 5 star experience as far as the bar itself, instead see it for what it's worth- an awesome dive on the beach! A bartenders job is to make drinks. That's it! Not bitch and complain about the drink you ordered. A drink is a drink. Just make the damn drink. It doesn't matter what time of day it is. If I want to drink a bloody mary at 1:00 in the afternoon, that my business. It's not your business to cuss at me under your breath saying "that's a fucking morning drink" over and over. Great beach dive bar. Can't say one bad thing. Great place to hang and catch a sunset.

2 stars because it's right on the sand and the drinks are reasonably priced. However, the customer service and overall friendliness of the bar lacks big time. It's not very welcoming and the bartendar isn't eager to serve you. It seemed like mostly locals and everyone knew each other. My friend and I went outside to sit on the sand and were greeted by a local who immediately started talking about his sex life. He offered to buy us a drink after we finished ours and we declined saying we will get our own drink. As we walked back into the bar to order we decided to leave and find some place else. So we left and found a bar in Silver Strand (the next beach over) and had a great time there. Perhaps if I was a local and frequented the Rudder Room, I would have grown to appreciate it but service should be top notch for customers, especially those who aren't locals. I may or may not give it another try if I find myself in the area. I'll update my review if I do. read more

What's not to like about the place? The bar is on the beach, views of the water, volleyball pits and the ability to sit out in the sand in the warmer months and enjoy a beerage. The bartenders pour a decent cocktail and if you tip well, they use a heavy hand, so be kind to them and they will return the favor. Be warned, the place is a dive bar and please leave your LA expectations at the door. The locals look like locals, and the weekend folks up from LA usually stand out for all the wrong reasons. Heavy military patronage both active and retired but the stories are great. During the summer tanned naked flesh is in abundance on the beach, makes for a sexed-up mix. Also, a plug for the little restaurant outside the front door, they have a great tri-tip sandwich and the clam chowder is rich and thick, and they will deliver your order to the inside of the bar our outside on the beach. If your goal is something fruity and with an umbrella, you will be sorely disappointed at this place so please trot on down the road. read more

For what it is--a dive bar--it's the best of its kind. I'm hesitant to tell people about it for fear of overcrowding, but everyone's already heard. Where else on this freaking planet can you order a call brand drink, have them pour you a double and a half, and pay only $5.75? Hell, those days ended in the Nixon Administration. And a well drink is $4--same long pour. Take your drink outside, sit on the patio, or right out on the beach in an Adirondack chair. And I do mean on the beach. Hungry? The place does not serve food, but right out front is the Hollywood Grill, which has the greatest hamburgers, Hot dogs and french fries you're ever going to eat. This is a place for the ages...and for drinkers. If you want a great bloody Mary on Sunday, you'll find it at the Rud, but try ordering a Long Island iced tea or some other foo foo drink, and they will laugh your ass out of the place read more

i literally grew up in here. opened in 1962, just as i was born, my dad was a regular here. he was also the bartender for years and years, and all of his old friends and family would gather here on a very frequent basis. we saw the ownership change, and nothing changed. the locals, the military guys, the surfers, the old timers, always here, always with some food, some hugs, and hints on who to bet on for the next big game. it was a great place, and the only reason i can't it's even better now, is becuase they took down all the pics of me and my dad. go in there, and ask dave or one of the other bartenders to put up the pics of brandon and stu!!! yep, stu cruz was my dad, and he was the best thing about the rudder room, ever. go in and tell them that a cruz sent you. have a coors and a shot of tequila for my old man, and be sure to throw the shot glass on the roof of his old house. it's next door on the patio! long live the rudder room, brandon cruz read more
