This is probably one of the worst experiences I had at Ruby's. I normally don't write bad reviews and I am pretty lenient when it comes to service. First, I found a piece of hair in my food and only replaced the portion where the hair touched. Second, we ordered a Banana Split, yet it took a while for them to bring it out and when they did-- the ice cream was all melted in the bottom, so therefore it was too late for them to replace it. Finally, shortly after eating there I got food poisoning the same night. Ruby's is one of my favorite diners, but I have never encountered this problem from any other restaurant I have experienced. We waited 45 minutes and then walked out because our food still wasn't ready while someone near us walked in with a similar order and got their food within ten minutes! This was absolutely not our waiters fault, he seemed extremely busy and kept going to the kitchen to try to get our food because he knew it was a problem. I have been here a few times as I love going to Cars and Coffee and it's a close breakfast place but each time I have gone I have been less than impressed with the service and timeliness of the kitchen staff, once again I find the waiters do what they can but this problem seems to arise in the kitchen! Ruby's is our go to when we want a good burger and fries. Until yesterday in San Clemente at the beautiful outlet mall! Brought the wrong burgers no problem because they immediately got the right ones (probably picked up the wrong order). No utensils, had to ask for their flimsy, cheap napkins twice (this has always been an issue with Ruby's napkins), hard to eat a good burger without napkins! Fries were cold, burger had Swiss instead of cheddar but all that could be forgiven. What can't is the condition of the restrooms! Not 1 but 3 of the 4 had no toilet paper! Two friends and I sat outside for lunch and ordered standard cheeseburgers and milkshakes. Though the place was 1/3 full, the service was awful. 1) We each had to repeat our order three times to the waiter, as he kept getting it wrong. Perhaps a new system? 2) Another table sent back a milkshake (wrong order), which they gave to us and charged us for it. 3) The dirty dishes sat for 15+ minutes. 4) We had to hunt down the waiter to get our check. I understand everywhere being short staffed and walk in with extra patience everywhere I go. However the behavior from Marcos that I saw this morning was disgusting. We walked in two minutes before they opened, and we were about the fifth table there. We were instantly sighed at and greeted with "were not open yet they just walked in" in a rude and disgruntled tone. He spoke about the customers in such a nasty way. We were grateful he let us sit and sat quietly among ourselves. My thing is, there's a car show that starts and people like to sit and watch, does it hurt to open for the staff ten minutes earlier so they're not in a chaos right when they open? It was hardly busy at all, but from Marcos's tone, we saw it. It soon became very busy and we were pretty soon forgotten off by him, he would skip us to help other customers while we sat for about a total of 20 minutes waiting to get through the payment. Our experience here was a little up and down: When we first got in the building there was no host/hostess waiting to take our party. A manager in a red shirt helped us after she found out that no one was seeing to us. We were sat down and our waiter MARCUS took a while to make an appearance. After about five minutes of just sitting there, he came up and asked for our drink order. We got our drinks and before we could even let him know we were ready to order he left... we actually had to flag him down to let him know that we were ready. He proved to be rather distracted. One server by the name of ERON refilled my water for me and he was cool; he seemed to be more devoted to our party than our actual server... The food was very good. And as we were nearing the end of our meal, Marcus was more attentive and bouncy (for a better tip?). Regardless, he did he job well and got us our check and everything within the perfect time. The kids wanted to come here because for some reason my kids are obsessed with the milkshake and their garlic fries at Ruby's diner. The one here has an ice cream store attached to the restaurant which is different from other locations. They also serve milkshakes at the ice cream parlor. We have gone to several ruby's diner but the one here at the outlet is super slow in service. Our hostess sat us down fairly quickly but we sat for like 20 minutes and nobody came by to ask us if we wanted any drinks or take our orders. Several servers came by serving tables nearby but not once did anyone came by to check on us. After sitting around for 20 minutes with no one to come by to take our drink or food order, we got agitated and left. Worst customer service ever. My order couldn't be more simpler with My 3 burgers/shakes and somehow they manage to screw everything up. David Castilleja is the GM and really shouldn't be. Has zero communication, customer service, and managerial skills. Doesn't surprise me why the other employees that work for him also don't have any of those skills as well. David didn't even have a business card to give me when I asked him so I can complain. My family was Uber excited when we heard a Ruby's was opening right around the corner. Every experience we've had at this particular location has been great. From the hostess to the servers and busboys I have nothing to complain about. They let our dog sit with us on the patio and regularly come by during the meal to make sure everything is going ok. I'm not too picky when it comes to the decor. I care about the food and man does it hit the spot. You know the one. It's the spot where you're like, "I probably shouldn't be eating this but who cares, it tastes so good. Bring on the shake! More chili cheese fries! Bring me the biggest burger you make! I LOVE this Rubys! The service was AMAZING and the food is EXTRAORDINARY. The ambiance is great too, there's really cool surfboards on the ceiling spinning and the architecture is really nice and high end. Out of all the Ruby's in the area, I would highly recommend this one. read more

One star for the decor. 0 stars to our freaking server- Rodca We were a party of 6 and weren't even greeted for 15 mins. All starving i finally waved someone down to help us. She came over AFTER she was done telling some sob story to an other table. She comes over and apologizes saying that it was her friend? And THEN she continued to tell us another huge story about her life and how hard she has it to work here . It was super awkward my husband and I didn't really know what to say. We finally get our food and it's just pathetic. Cheese burger with meat? I'm vegan and I specified I needed veggie- my husbands food came out undercooked. Everyone else in my party seemed underwhelmed. My daughters meal was another 5 mins behind -a kids meal! We saved our money and grabbed desert somewhere else. Seriously. Save your money and go to Denny's down the street. If you do come here avoid this server at all costs. read more

The food is not that great. I truly believe that they do not use any seasoning on any of the food. I also noticed a mild odor throughout the restaurant. Update 2/20/20: Muuuuch better. Rafa was attentive and the manager was engaged. Food was good. Why are you doing this to us, Rubys??! Beautiful location and we wee so excited for Ruby's near us. We've tried several times but every time the service just absolutely sucks. We waited 18 minutes with 3 kids before I begged the hostess Emily to get us a server. Finally, the hostess cane to say they were too busy and she took our drink orders. The servers are nice but completely and sadly undermanaged and supported. Why does the manager, David Castilleja, (named on the door but absent) even have a job?? Unfortunately, this place sucks and I give up. My money is too hard to come by to be frustrated and irritated every time I visit. read more

Went in on a Sunday, was not overly busy and had a small wait. Even though people were waiting, a self important couple come in, said the were in a hurry and would place an order to go. Because they were bugging the kitchen by stand at the back they gave them the next table before everyone. After sending our order back for a third time, we enlisted the assistance of the manager, who physically took the omelet order again to serve it completely wrong yet again. I cannot express what a fantastic experience I had here. We came down for Cars and Coffee and decided to eat at this restaurant for the convenience of it. First off, the restrooms were well maintained and super clean. Secondly, the front staff were very attentive to our group size and even helped us get the paper cars for us upon request. Finally, there was a little delay with the food because of the show but MARIA G. took care great care of us! Everything came out perfectly as ordered and she cared to all of our needs. We had a great meal sitting out on the patio. Service was awesome! The sun was setting and before I had a chance to move one of the waiters moved an umbrella to block the sun. Service: Slooooow everytime. Servers are not that friendly and don't check on you. Order is ALWAYS wrong....no exaggeration. When I've told my servers the food is usually wrong, they say if it's wrong, we'll send it back . Ummm...you're missing the point. I don't want to have to wait extra long to have my order remade. Either they mess up my burger, forget the pickles, cook it medium when I ask for it well done, forget my side of dressing, bring out regular fries when I ask for garlic, etc. The hostesses will also always say it's a 10-15 minute wait when it's actually 30-45 minutes. Food Quality: Ruby's has fantastic food quality.... just not this location sadly. My fries are cold everytime. No matter how many times I specially ask for fresh fries (I only do that at this location bc I'm anticipating them being cold) they come out cold. Prices: Only this location will try to charge you extra for things. Read other reviews bc this seems to be a trend at this San Clemente location. I asked for extra tomatoes in my burger and they gave me 1 extra slice of tomato and charged me $2! When I brought it to the servers attention she said tomatoes are extra charge, but I said I only got 1 extra slice...so she rolled her eyes and said she would take it off the bill (with an attitude). We live less than a mile from this location and used to come here often (every week) but the service is bad even after being open over a year. So we don't eat here anymore. We initially thought it would get better and all these problems were just because they were a new location. But it's apparent this location has poor management. Read yelp reviews for this place, you will notice a trend. Such a shame bc Ruby's is great, but I don't recommend you eat at this location. read more

We were underwhelmed with our hamburgers. However, the worst part was (after our server assured me that I was eating the impossible burger) we found out that I had actually eaten the regular burger! Our server did not seem apologetic or concerned that I had ordered a vegetarian meal and ate a non-vegetarian meal. When we brought up the fact that we weren't happy about our meal, she involved the manager, who eventually removed the cost of the impossible burger from our check. We have been anxiously waiting for the Rubys diner to open at the San Clemente outlet mall. I first visit was met with excellent service and a perfectly prepared meal of burgers fries and onion rings. We split two Oreo shakes for four and they were just as good as a five dollar shake should be. The burger was juicy and the bun was cooked just right. We got the unlimited fries but we're so full we stopped at one. You can order in or take Ruby's food to go. What a great addition to the San Clemente village by the sea. read more

Let's just start by saying I'll never be back to this location again. More budget put into the decor than the customer service. Saw milkshakes being served that were half way full (I know they don't come like that at other Ruby's locations) so as much as I wanted to get their new peaches and cream Shake, I passed out of fear of getting served half a shake I would pay full price for. Had to ask for straws for drinks. Had to ask for plates for our over cooked onion rings. Had to ask if there were any dipping sauces available for said onion rings only to be told they pretty much only have dressings. Huh?! Tried ordering the Impossible Burger (pretty much the whole reason we go to Ruby's) only to be told by my waiter they don't carry it anymore because it's $200/lb... I called the Oceanside location to see if they still had it and found out they do. The Coke I ordered lacked carbonation so it was more like drinking syrup. Did I mention the wait time was ridiculous when there was plenty of patio seating on a beautiful day. Don't let the decor fool you; I should have just went to The Oceanside location where the customer service is great as is the food. read more
