This visit was for a friend's birthday. Their choice on me. All the options in the world, and this establishment is what they chose because they've never tried this restaurant before. Given my previous visits to other locations, I offered the advice of, "it can be a hit, or a major miss". Well....I was pleasantly surprised. Minus a few things that my friend pointed out. First of all, they had just barely opened for the day. I had absolutely NO problem waiting as I said, "at least we know the food will be fresh"! Friend became impatient as we had additional plans, so it became a takeout order. I ordered the Garlic Peppered Ribeye steak well done at 16 oz. It was FANTASTIC! And FINALLY cooked to well done perfection. My friend ordered the New York Steak 8 oz and requested medium rare. Of course, of course, it just had to arrive medium well done. Like I told them, "this place can either be a hit or a miss". Next up, they were upset that the garden salad states in the description that is comes with red onions and none were to be found. Yes, disappointing, but it arrived fresh and it did include the cheese, egg, tomatoes, and croutons; I pointed out. TBH, after looking at others photos, it appears NO garden salad at this restaurant has ever had red onions included . Perhaps Ruby River needs to delete that from their description. The parmesan tomatoes side showed up with underripe tomatoes which was very disappointing because that's the one side I said is a MUST TRY! Needless to say, my friend said they were good nonetheless (but added on, they probably could make even better at home...lol). Caesar salad was lacking in cheese and the side dressing wasn't half full but it was fresh and good. Shrimp cocktail appetizer isn't worth the money for six tiny pieces of shrimp, then they just pour on the cocktail sauce on the lettuce bed instead of having the sauce on the side. It was good and even better with sliced lemons for juice; but really, a tiny appetizer considering the cost. The artichoke dip and Parmesan bread appetizer is a MUST TRY! 5 out of 5. Perfect seasoning and crispy toasted fresh Parmesan bread. Plenty of portions for 2-3 people as an app. My friend really liked the garlic mashed potatoes with white gravy because it was made out of red skin potatoes and the skin was still on some in the provided "to go" cup. Ugh ugh, for me there. I absolutely abhor mashed potatoes with skin involved but to each their own. All in all, a 4 star visit. Stopped by for dinner and ordered the rib eye and prime rib. Our server was super attentive, friendly and gave great recommendations. You also get this large baked bread. The prime rib was perfectly booked, juicy, thick and delicious. The horse radish was shaved which was great with a large portion of au jus. I stopped in to see the car show. I tried to have lunch at the restaurant sponsoring the show. I ordered the tortilla soup, and some chicken. The soup was brought to my table, and it was barely even warm. The waitress never came back to my table until my entree was brought out. I explained the unsafe condition of the soup and she offered another bowl but I said to just take it away. I cut into my grilled chicken breast and it was barely warm as well. I waved my staff member over and explained that this food was also barely warm. They offered to retry, but by this time I had lost all trust in anything being served was safe. I didn't want to chance food poisoning. The bread was good so I give it 1 star. I am a huge proponent of restaurant food meeting the 40/140 standards of food safety. I"m so sad. This was my place to go when I wanted to have an awesome steak. Unfortunately there been some changes. No longer selling the port-house. Got myself a ribeye this time. The calamari's breading was falling apart and tasted a bit frozen still. Mushrooms and steak both didn't have seasoning and tasted really greasy. I had to keep adding salt as I was eating. I switched out the mushrooms for a steak soup to see maybe that would be better but that was also missing seasoning. I think the best part of the meal was the bread in the beginning. The waiter was really nice as well. And the guy in the entrance was fantastic. He seems like he real cared about the experience of the customers. They treat you like family, and you can get a juicy steak and big baked potato for a very reasonable price! This is not a fancy, big city chophouse! It's a classic western steakhouse. Not a huge menu, but what they serve is very tasty! The atmosphere is relaxed and the decor is western ranch house. The bar and country music make you feel at home in cowboy hat and boots, if that's your thing! Most things on the menu are good and some items are very good. Every appetizer I've had is amazing. I wanted to try something I don't have in Alabama so I came here for dinner! The restaurant has a Texas/cowboy feel to it and the environment is comfortable. My waiter was very attentive and made sure that I had everything I needed. The food was good. I ordered the 12oz garlic butter ribeye, medium rare. with the loaded baked potato and a side salad that came out before the meal. The steak was cook right, but a little on the tougher side. The staff was awesome and attentive. Initially there wasn't someone at the host stand, but within less than 30 seconds someone appeared, apologized for the wait and offered to seat us. Turns out they were doing double duty on a Wednesday night, attending to a few tables and being the host. They did a great job at both. We had the prime rib, some draft beers and wine. The prime rib was perfect--love their robust horse radish sauce that has thin long slivers of horse radish adding a nice texture. The beer mugs were so cold that split foam froze on the side of my stein mug. And they had a selection of over a dozen draft beers. The only thing that needed tweaking was the steamed broccoli which needed just a little bit more steaming which they did quickly at our request. I'd much rather have my broccoli slightly crisp than so over cooked that it limps. So I consider their leaning towards the crisper side to start with a welcome departure from other places with over cooked vegetables. We are looking forward to our next visit here. read more

It has been at least 10 years since my wife and I last ate at Ruby River. We decided to give it try tonight because we remembered what it used to be. After tonight's visit, I am just grateful that the last 10 years have been Ruby River Free. First, I understand that this is not a high end steakhouse. My expectation is that they would be on the same level as Texas Roadhouse or Outback, not Ruth's Chris or Spencer's. However, even shooting for mid-level quallity is a bridge too far for the crew at Ruby River. I would be surprised if there is a chef overseeing the kitchen, it is likely just staffed with high school students following directions written on the grease-stained walls. I honestly think you could walk into a Denny's and hand the cook the same ingredients used at Ruby River and likely get a better tasting meal. I ordered the Rib-eye steak, the mushrooms and the wedge salad. My wife ordered the smothered chicken, side salad and baked potato. The baked potato, mushrooms and wedge salad were not bad, but nothing special. The rib-eye was tough, which I didn't even know was possible with a rib-eye, and was seasoned very poorly. I still managed to eat most of it. The smothered chicken was a masterpiece in incompetence. Imagine that you have a 10 year-old who wants to surprise mom and dad by making dinner. She finds some chicken in the freezer, a bottle of mustard and a bag of shredded cheddar. She puts the chicken in the microwave to 'cook' but only manages to thaw it slightly. She then spreads a bunch of mustard on the plate, puts the thawed chicken on top of it, and then covers it in the entire bag of cheese. Finally, she puts it back in the microwave long enough to melt the cheese and to warm the outside of the raw chicken. That's EXACTLY what we were served. We never complain about bad food at a restaurant. We never send anything back. If it is nasty, we just chalk it up to experience and don't go back. But in this case, we did tell the server that it was raw because it is clearly unsafe. She asked if we wanted another one, and we said no. I was surprised, however, when she brought out the check and still charged us for the chicken. It would be nice to think that someone at Ruby River might read these reviews and make some changes. However, they haven't even claimed their business on yelp, which means they don't care about these reviews. They seem to get decent crowds, so maybe it doesn't matter. read more

One of the best steakhouses I've ever been to! There weren't a lot of people when I walked in. The server was friendly and patient with us. Food is absolutely delicious. Normally I don't finish my steak and I'd do take out, but this is the first time that I've finished my steak right off the bat. I'm not a fan of the browning onion though. I thought the batter was too light and I prefer the one in Texas steakhouse. I forgot the drink name, but it's non-alcoholic and it's peach flavored. It's super sweet, but it's cheat day for me! Two of our friends are already seated. Two meet us in the parking lot. We go in and order our drinks. The drinks don't come, but we get waters...we order our food. The drinks come, all except my ice tea with lemon...I wait. Remind him...there were 3 side house salads ordered. 1 salad comes...then follows 1 house salad and 2 southwest salads...no one order a southwest, however my friend ordered a entree southwest steak salad. He doesn't put her salad order in. Instead argues with us that we ordered 2 southwest side salads...didn't happen. And he keeps leaving the table before we are done speaking. Only making eye contact when he sees we need something and still no approach the table, but then pan his eyes over our heads, like he didn't just make eye contact, but ignore us...I think his name was JP?? My tea finally comes...no lemon, almost no ice, no straw. I ask for a straw...our food comes...some of it...one full meal, one steak without the sides...still no straw. One meal didn't have fries and he still hasn't put in the order for my friends salad that we argued about for 5 minutes. My friends fries come after she asks for them twice...still no straw...I ate my Luke warm steak...I ate a bit of the yam before I gave up...the straw makes it to the table..(damn was I thirsty) Better ration out of sips because no one was being offered a refill or second beverage. Homegirls steak was raw. The salad made it eventually... Then it started to get hot in there...and we usually order a few rounds of drinks and desserts for everyone. My boyfriend was so embarrassed that this was the place he went for his birthday...especially after last year (and another time this year, that was equally disappointing) wasn't too much better than tonight... This is a great, laid back steakhouse. After waiting two hours the night before for some hipster joint, we decided to look for a restaurant a little more low key this time. Mission accomplished! We walked in and were seated immediately on a Monday night. Everyone in our party enjoyed their food. My prime rib was great, cooked to order, and had tons of fresh horseradish. The potatoes and gravy were great. The asparagus was steamed well, but I'd probably get something else next time, as it wasn't seasoned or anything. $50 dollars for two prime ribs with two sides each and good service is about all I can ask for. read more

The medium rare steak was cooked well done and the regular sweet potato was still hard and had not been cooked all the way. And it was overload on the garlic on the overcooked shrimp The steak was corrected and the potatoes shrimp were removed from the bill. Found street parking down on 500 S. They have shorter hours right now. The steak egg rolls (and their ranch) are spicy but good. The frozen daiquiri was delicious. The bread and butter/raspberry butter were good. The onion rings had fry sauce were good and not spicy. My medium New York steak was all good pink (my conpanion's was slightly overdone), and sides (asparagus and onion rings) were excellent. Service was top notch. This used to be one of the best places to eat dinner. I loved the Raspberry butter and the Raspberry chicken. They stopped doing those a while ago but I kept coming back anyway. However the food has continued to decline. My filet medallions have been filled with fat and hard to eat, bread is like sawdust and my husband said his steak seemed like it was delivered to them frozen and then recooked.
