I always try to stop at Rueben's Cochina whenever my travel takes me to or through Brigham City. After a friendly greeting and being shown to your table, you're greeted with hot chips fresh out of fryer with freshly made red and green salsas, both with crunchy tidbits of onion. They're famous for their Carne Asada. I am not normally a fan of flank steak. It is often low quality and tough. But stick with me, the steak at Ruben's isn't low quality flank steak. It's locally sourced, high quality flank steak! It's tender and smoky, charred a little around the edges. It's muy bien! The Carne Asada is best experienced as part of the Mar y Tierra. It comes with many succulent grilled shrimp, served fajita style with lots of grilled onions, bell peppers and mushrooms and fresh tomatoes, lettuce and guacamole, and corn or flour tortillas. Even the rice and beans are part of the main attraction- not to be passed over! They delightfully complement the dish. The rice is cooked perfectly and the recruited beans are served with melted cheddar and jack cheese over the top. I've also had many of their other dishes here and they've all been delicious. Some of my favorites are the enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas. Try the food here and it'll be your new favorite! read more

Brigham City, Utah This is supposed to be the number one Mexican restaurant in the city. It is slightly busy for a Monday night. The booths are vinyl seating with high back wood and the floors are concrete. The staff quickly cleans the tables after the customer leaves. This makes for a clean restaurant as well as the bathroom. I ordered the chicken Loco burrito. It comes with sour cream and guacamole. However, after we ordered it and waited 10 minutes, the waitress informs us that he burrito is on the way out, but no guacamole was available as they ran out. You ran out of guacamole? I thought you were a Mexican restaurant! The burrito is quite large. Bigger than my hand. It has pinto beans, rice, and chicken. We chose to cover ours in queso cheese. It was supposed to be topped with queso fresco, but they must' have run out of that as well because it was not on our burrito. The burrito has really good flavor. But I think it has more beans than chicken. The chicken is diced, which gives a different flavor to the burrito. I like the flavor of the burrito. The chips and salsa were average. I don't suppose there are too many places to choose from in this area so I think we made the right choice. I will have to remove some stars for the missing guacamole and queso fresco. Frustration came with the check. You don't have guacamole and then you charge me extra for white sauce but did not tell me there was an up charge. A good wait staff would have informed us of the up charge for the white sauce, which I would have still ordered, but there would have been no surprises at the end. Then a good staff member would have removed that charge for the inconvenience of not having guacamole at a Mexican restaurant. read more

Yesterday I went to Rubens as I have for many years, also when it was El Toro Viejo. It took 10 minutes for them to seat us and only one other family was in the entire empty restaurant. The red and green salsa for thr chips was runny like water not even slightly chucky as previously, also it was too spicy with both! When the food arrived the plates were red hot but the food however was watery and cold, which indicates chef Mic as in Microwave was used!! The portions were much smaller than previously and the food was runny/watery on the plate indicating it was put into the microwave frozen! We ordered a simple dessert to share and waited 25 minutes only to find out they had forgotten to prepare it!! They did not thank us for coming! I am not sure what has changed here, maybe a different chef and untrained staff? Not sure. Sadly this place is no longer on my list of delicious places to eat. read more

Love the carne asada plate, like that they give you a variety of salsas. Food always comes out hot, even during busy lunch hours they're on top of everything. You know it's a good Mexican restaurant when you walk into the bathroom and it always smells fresh with Fabuloso. For being in the far reaches of northern Utah, this is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants that I'll stop in on if I ever am in the area. read more

This is an attractive restaurant with friendly, efficient wait staff. I liked all the booth seating. We ordered the Tacos de Carne Asada. Portions were generous but food was bland. Salsas that accompanied chips were also bland, but we appreciated that they were complimentary. We left satisfied but would probably try another restaurant next time we are passing through town. read more

When we entered the restaurant we were greeted quickly. Our server was personable and very helpful. We had horchata which was top notch. Everyone loved their meals (carne Asad, chili colorado burrito and steak quesadilla). The restaurant was beautifully decorated and their chairs are something else! I'm a BIG fan of Ruben's! Their chips are always crispy! Salsa is always yummy! I tend to gravitate towards the Vegetarian Fajitas or Tamales depending on my mood! Service was amazing. My order was taken and delivered out to my table in a few minutes. The flautas are amazing. And the music is spot on.

Tried this place recently and it wasn't great. The whole place smelled so strongly of cleaner that I swear I could taste it. I ordered a chile relleno and my son ordered the carne asada tacos. My food was not very tasty. The green chile tasted sour which means it was probably old and they wrap it in scrambled eggs which I hate. My son's carne asada was delicious! Service was ok. The Food: I try to get to Rubens several times per year, I live in Salt Lake, and this is one of my favorite places in Brigham City on my way to hot springs in Honeyville. (I Usually go after the springs, not before ;) ). The last two times I've been here I got the Loco Burrito. The owner Ruben waited on us and told me this dish is his take on a traditional Mexican Burrito. It's just the right heat level for me, I'm sure I could ask them to spice it up, but it's just right as it is. You can choose your own protein, Carne Asada, Pollo, Chile Verde. Any Choice is delicious. In my reviews I tend to skip over the freebies... Not here, I LOVE their chips and salsa. So much that I usually try not to eat all the chips until I get my dinner, because these chips in their refried pinto beans are the bees knees. OK OK OK so I usually have to ask for more chips. I've also had several other combo's on the menu, the tacos are great, the fajitas are yummy, and chile verde burrito is pretty awesome too. The Service: This place makes you feel like family. They take care of their guests like you are in their home. They want you to have an enjoyable experience. I have never had an error on an order here. If you need anything they are quick to get it for you. (Like limes for my sprite) The Restaurant: This place looks like a Mexican cantina, carved wood chairs and booths. Glass top tables... Put a beach and a bucket of coronas out front and you're on an excellent vacation. Everything is clean and cared for. Summary: I seriously want to pick this place up and move it to a beach... did I mention it would be perfect there? Anyway about it, I love this place, the owner Ruben, and his wife treat you like family. They do have a Beer/Wine License. I have always been too full to get dessert here, but I wouldn't be opposed to it if I could stop scarfing down those yummy chips! read more

The service was very friendly and knowledgeable. The chips are very thin, my favorite! The green salsa was very tasty. Husband got a combo plate with a taco and regular enchilada. ( they have several different sauces. ) I had the over 60 chicken Fajitas. Very, very good. Seasoned and fried just right. No sour cream or Guac, but plenty of food if your not looking for leftovers. Tucked into the end of a little strip mall, Ruben's is a Mexican gem in Brigham City. It should be noted they just changed their name to Ruben's. There's a lot of confusion between this location and Logan's El Toro Viejo, but this should help. They've got some great choices here including a couple favorites. Their tacos de carne Asada are just delicious. They fry the tortillas birria style in what I think is consume. The tacos are dressed with all the street taco favorites (tomatoes, hand made pico etc) but with added sour cream and guacamole. They are covered in what the store calls Parmesan, but I think it's really Cotija...I could be wrong though. I also really love the pollo cilantro, chile verde, and flautas. They make a mean salsa verde too, which is on the sweet side, and served with their chips. The rice and beans are also quite good. The refried beans are cheesy and salty. No bland beans here!!! I accidentally left my purse at the restaurant on a Saturday night. Didn't discover this until Sunday morning and of course the restaurant was closed until til Monday at 11:00am. I am from California and was heading back home on Sunday morning and needed my purse, money and keys. I was frantic and after searching for an emergency number (local police do not have those contacts) and coming up empty. Thankfully my son in law was retired police officer and went into investigation mode and tracked down the owners who only lived a couple of blocks from the restaurant. They kindly retrieved my purse and all the contents were untouched. Thank you so much Ruben and wife, what could have turned out to be a complete disaster of a trip ended up to be a wonderful time spent with family. We enjoyed the food we had for dinner and I would recommend this place as a great place to eat and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. read more

Embarrassed over a confrontation a manager made to me in front of a lot of customers. Held at me and told me I was not allowed to order side orders. Which I was not aware of. Not worth the fuss but was so embarrassed by his actions, he never was very polite to begin with, I don't know why I ever kept going back. read more

My favorite restaurant to eat at when I'm back home visiting family in Brigham. We've gotten take out multiple times and have eaten inside the restaurant and it has been fantastic every time! The food is great and authentic. The family and staff are very nice! This place is a must. read more

Ruben's Cocina Mexicana, Brigham City Food 5/5 Atmosphere 5/5 Service 5/5 We visited Ruben's Cocina Mexicana in Brigham City last night. We were greeted at the door by Ruben himself and told we would have to wait a few minutes. The restaurant building is older but has beautiful hand-carved wooden booths, great Mexican music playing in the background, and a warm authentic atmosphere. We felt as if we were invited guests in Ruben's home. It was 7:00pm on a Friday night and every table was occupied. True to his word, Ruben showed us to our table after 5 minutes. We were immediately served water and freshly made chips with two types of salsa. The chips were hot and perfectly salted. Both salsas (red and green) were amazing with the red being our favorite. We ate the chips and salsa and were immediately offered more. Our waiter was Ruben's son, Ruben IV. He was energetic and committed to providing us fantastic service. Ruben went through the menu with us and gave us great recommendations. I ordered the Tampiqueña platter which includes Carne asada, a chile relleno, and an enchilada de mole. It was served with guacamole, pico de gallo, rice, beans, and tortillas. The Carne asada is skirt steak and cooked to your steak preference. My wife ordered the triple combination platter and chose a beef burrito, chicken burrito, and chile relleno served with rice and beans. The food came out fast (10 mins or so) and was served on huge heated plates. Everything we tried was perfect! The ingredients were all top quality and fresh. We took home lots of leftovers and added some take home red salsa to our order. The total with tax was $39. A pint of salsa was an extra $6. There are lots of good Mexican restaurants around but this hands down our new favorite. read more
