Shhhh.. I was giving away my recycle bags forever, but.... No more! I always wondered how much people get for my bags of cans and bottles. Well I finally decided to recycle my own cans and bottles myself. Being a newbie at this I chose a place that has lots of easy parking and looked clean, unlike a lot of recycle businesses. RRR Recycle in Kapahulu which shares the same parking lot as Side Street Inn is that place I was looking for. They checked all the boxes and was so easy for anyone can recycle. All you have to do is separate the cans, plastics and bottles in the plastic trash bins provided(Green or Grey it doesn't matter). Stand in line with your bins, they take it, weigh or count it your choice and give you your money! $$$. Well it's money I never had, but it was so easy to do that I'll continue to do it. It was fast and you'll feel a whole lot better that you did it. read more

Today my go to place for recycling was close for lunch . So decided to try this place RRR recycling located on Kapahuluu . They were crowded lots of people were waiting I believe they were just finishing their lunch too . This place is very strict they wanted all the caps off from the plastic bottles. I remember way back when it was announced on the news that you can leave the caps on for your plastic bottles for recycling. Oh well I'll be going back to my other place for recycling because they don't care if the caps are on lol . read more

Recycling aluminum cans in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii... I had a bag of clean, used aluminum cans in my car and searched for the nearest Recycling Center. Located on Kapahulu Avenue, RRR Recycle is next to the Side Street Inn building. I parked in the lot, poured my cans in a plastic trash can, and dragged it to the worker. I didn't have to sign the receipt like other places! After weighing the cans, the worker gave me my payment and a receipt! It was quick and easy! read more

April is Earth Month... I get excited when I find a quarter on the ground so you know collecting cans and recyclables is something that we all should be doing and though I really don't buy much drinks that do require the HI5 charges, Terry K who had a couple bags of cans ready to go was wondering if I'd take it off her hands and I'm so I gladly did and was so nice of her to offer. This Kapahulu location is great with lots of free parking as the entrance is quite strange if you don't know is a slightly hidden behind a tree and fence so I do see many come in through the other which is right in front of the drop off house. There are these large green bins you empty your items into, they are quite sticky for obvious reasons so if you get the "ick!" make sure to bring some disposable gloves. You then bring it to the staff and it's all that easy! The staff here are nice and it's not as crowded as the Beretania location which I was closer to but wasn't in that mood to wait so a quick drive out to Kapahulu was definitely worth it. This RRR Recycle is conveniently located on Kapahulu Ave next to Side Street Inn and across from Uncle Bo's Pupu Bar & Grill in the open parking lot at the end. I haven't recycled here but I have recently came to dispose of electronics. When I called the City & County to figure out where to properly dispose of electronics, they told me this is the most convenient location for me. I was a little confused when I first arrived but the staff was very helpful. They told me it's the two sheds on the side. You just open the doors and you'll see bins where you can neatly dispose of your electronics. Just make sure to close the doors when you're finished. It's free and you can't beat free. Surprisingly, the place was well organized and quite clean for a recycling area. I was expecting things on the ground and the walls to be dirty but it's rather clean. It's free and everyone was friendly while I was there. One of the guys there was a Cowboys fan so that's at least a 1/2 a star bump up lol. 4.5 stars! This RRR Recyle location has become my location of preference for recycling. So far it hasn't been too crowded when I come here on my lunch breaks, the employees are semi-friendly, and it's not as dirty as the other locations. It's best to pre-sort and remove the caps from your plastic bottles before you get here, because you don't want to spend more time here than you have to. Note - the driveway closest to the Center is supposed to be one way going OUT. Please enter from the driveway at the traffic light (next to the building where Sidestreet Inn is located). read more

I admit, I'm not the most eco-friendly version of myself. But I did try the best I could to make simple steps. Recycling my cans and plastics to the recyclable places like this. And I may not sure where this place dropped all their recycling cans which I hope will not go to waste. Once in a while I take everything that they accepts here and grateful as always for the service they are doing. I highly respect the employees here. That said, I always rinse my can and take all the caps before dropping my bins here. They might not be the friendliest but they were doing their part and that alone is enough. Also, the service is straight forward. You separate plastics, cans and bottles on the green bins and you go in line with your bins. Make sure to also wear masks as other people like homeless comes to do recycle too and sorry but they really stink so much. And besides, we are still in Covid era so a little precaution won't hurt. Been coming here. Normally get nice people working here at the kapahulu location. But, today got a guy named Garrett. Very rude and obnoxious. I think he tried to jip me of one container of small plastics. Watch them when they weigh out your bins. Recommend separating by category at home. It's important to be environmentally responsible everywhere in this planet, but especially on this lovely island. People live here. None of the Waikiki hotels recycle, it's expensive and difficult. I collect all my type one and 2 plastics and aluminum which is actually not a small amount on any vacation and hop on TheBus to drop it off here, then I go to Bailey's to buy some vintage Aloha shirts (more recycling), then I reward myself with some plate lunch at Rainbow Drive in, all within a short walk of TheBus stop. The recycling center on Beretania was busy today at 1+. There was a line to cash out and a line waiting for barrels, plus the guys were busy scrutinizing one recycler (shouting at him, telling him to go somewhere else if he's not happy, asking him why he's slamming the barrel etc) so I decided to find a different one. There was no line here! Only one other person ahead of me when I pulled in. There were two employees, one man who checked the bottles and one woman who weighed the barrels and cashed out. I think there's an entrance right after the stop light on Date Street; across from Uncle Bo's. Blink and you'll miss it! I entered at the next gate, which could be the exit? I have no idea. The only gripe I have is they stack the barrels, which saves space and looks neat, BUT each barrel isn't light plus they stick (and stink). I can't imagine the elderly or the shorter folks lifting barrels and I don't know how helpful/willing to help these folks are. Also, the traffic flow is confusing. The One Way sign points towards the ocean but the parking stalls are angled in the opposite direction. Be careful when you enter and exit this place! Got $10.34 for one trash bag each full of mostly crushed aluminum cans and plastic bottles, and a handful of glass bottles. Since they offer manual counting, perhaps next time I'll do that to make sure the cash out is accurate. read more

Being an eco-warrior has a deep deep deep responsibility towards planet. With the plastics I used in my daily grind I don't think it's right to call myself as an eco-warrior. I'm too far beyond from that title though. But one thing is for sure, I do recycle. Four to five months I need to earn cash from the cans & bottles that we bandits keep in our lanai. We did try our best to do our little ways to save Mama Earth from drowning more on trash. It bad for a few bucks we got from recycling ayt. Know that this redemption place is self service. You do segregate bottles from cans to glass. Make sure caps & lids are already unattached. Be reminded that this is a recycling area so expect some flies luring around, that pee-odor that is so annoying to your smelling sense, & a loud clashing of cans & bottles. Of course, homeless people who tried to earn cash too that smells --- uggghhh! The thing that we love the most is Parking! Yes bruuuh, ample parking area and easy entrance & exit! For town dwellers, this recycling center on Kapahulu offers ample parking, helpful signage (even if on cardboard!) and friendly staff to simplify the process. Note that you need to remove the caps from plastic bottles before you toss them into the large green bins provided by the facility. Also, separate bins for glass bottles (separate by color) and aluminum cans. You stand in one line and your bin(s) in another adjacent to you. On my second visit, I was more prepared after checking the hours of operation and scoping the parking lot a few days earlier. My haul was just one bin that took me at least a month of recycling. Total return $2.62! It seemed small but every penny counts these days. If you are able to store more at home before coming in to the facility, good for you and it'll be worth it. Condo living doesn't afford me much space so I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon but if I do have enough for a bin, here's where I'd go. read more

This is my family's preferred location to redeem HI-5 bottles and cans primarily for the location and parking. I think they do an adequate job handling the process but sorely lacking in providing directions or assistance. It's truly self service where you have to know what to do. Most times I feel the by weight process leaves me short of correct redemption and to my point, how can you say my bottles and cans, which are 5 cents each add up to something in there that an amount that's not divisible by 5 cents, just saying, and it's all places I've gone, not just here. But over all, this is the best place to go by far. read more

Go there every so often. I like that there is plenty of parking spaces. BeCause of that, you don't feel as rushed to unload all of your cans since no one is waiting for your spot. Not much direction is given, but if you've done any recycling before, it's not rocket science. Once you get to the front of the line, which is usually very short, the weigh and payout is fast. What is with the one star reviews? I took my recycles here over the weekend and had the greatest experience. I forgot there was a RRR in Kapahulu. I usually go to the other 3 RRR recycling center. I would def. return to this location for my next recycle. During my last family event, we went thru 2 cases of water, 1 case of beer, & 1 case of soda. So it was time to take my recycles in along with the rest of my recycles. I had a trunk load of recycles and On a Hot Sunday I just wanted to get it done, over with , and out of the way. I had plans to drive out to the Kalihi RRR, ( I choose RRR over Reynolds) I try to avoid the Kalihi location as it gets very crazy there. I remember the Kapahulu one, so I checked the Yelp page to see if they are open on Sundays. so glad they are. I drove here and did my recycles. Done and happy I was able to enjoy the rest of my Sunday Funday. Here are the reasons why I love this RRR Recycle Center: *Not as crowded *Lots of Parking, huge parking lot *Not as crazy, ( if you visit the other location esp. Kalihi, there are many homeless, and they always seem to cause problems) * No fighting over the bins to put your recycles in * There are enough space to sort your recycles *The workers are friendly *The lines move quick * The lines are not super long like the other 2 location I frequent * This location makes, recycling fun! Here are few tips for Recycling @ RRR Recycle: * Remove your caps, no bottle caps * Separate your plastics, bottles, and cans * Beer bottles must be separated by colors * You can either have your recycles counted or by weight * You get more for your recycles, Large plastic are anything over 20 ounce and soda,separate those recycles from your small plastic. * They don't take wine bottles *Your plastic must have the labels attached Don't forget: RRR will be closed on Wednesdays. The staff breaks for lunch from 12:30-1:00 RRR closes early on weekends at 3:30 pm Please, when you bring in your recycles, allow your self time. If you arrive close to their closing time or lunch break, they may turn you away. They don't get paid over-time is what I was told by one of the employees. They have to stay later to close up. During all my visit and including my most recent visit, I had a great experience. I will def. take my recycles back here to this location again. This is still the best place to recycle. Most importantly you always get a receipt, and I always make more money when I come here. I don't consider myself a tree-hugger but I do care about planet earth. I want to do my part to keep this spinning ball from becoming the post-apocalyptic dump that Hollywood likes to envision (think Wall-E and T4). I know my recycling won't do much to save the penguins from their melting glaciers or forests from burning up but at least I can feel good about myself. Not far from my habitat is RRR Recycling Center. I like how friendly they are. Inside, it's like any recycling centers - sticky ground, confused buzzing bees, loud clashes of metal cans and glass, and lots of dirty recyclables. What sets this center from others? Even though it's not the closest recycling center to me, I like how they take pretty much every recyclable. Steel cans that are normally rejected or bottles without a 5 on bottom or other containers that have no CRV value - they'll take. I like that. Whether I get money for it is not an issue. I just want to get it recycled! Also, I like how they give an itemized receipt so that handful of change they give you is completely justified. Came here to drop off some bottles. Read the instructions listed, the employees were busy and not really telling people what to do. Grab a barrel, separate your items. I just had bottles. Remove caps, keep plastic covers. Count them. Then take your barrel to the line, barrel on right and you go to left. An employee will help you here and then you'll get your money. It's pretty fast process when you do everything correctly. Giving it 3 stars instead of 4 since you have to figure things on your own. But it's also not that hard. It's a recycling center on O'ahu, so you know you will be competing for trash cans with people that collect HI-5 for a living. This center is conveniently placed along Kapahulu, but the entrance and exit to the parking lot are not well marked and would be difficult if traffic were busy. The staff was not friendly. If there are rules and procedures for a business, they must be clearly marked, not yelled at a customer. The main benefit of RRR over Reynolds is the computer weighing and money dispensing system. This makes redemption much faster and simpler, especially when other customers have more than a dozen full cans. It's filthy, so be prepared to get a little dirty. read more

I have been to several recyclers on Oahu and this one is one of the better ones. The woman that was working there was courteous and informed us that she would be with us. Another thing that I really like about this location is the ample parking. This location does need to correct some deficiencies related to efficiency which is why I gave them a three star review. Here are some of my observations: 1. They need more containers/baskets/bins for the customers to place their recyclables. When I came here there just simply was not enough. Customers ended up waiting for these containers to become available. The old adage that time is money falls true here. That leads to my second point. 2. They need signs to make things easier for customers. For example, they need a sign to show where to line up to wait for containers/baskets/bins. They also need a sign on how they want you to sort the glass bottles. In this case, you need to keep the colored bottles separated. Blue and green bottles are to be placed in the same container. One customer had mixed all of this bottles together and only found out after I had asked about it. He had about 13 large containers full of bottles. He had to separate the bottles after he had already mixed them. Sure, that was his fault as he really should have asked first but all of this confusion could have been prevented. Here are my tips for those just starting out on recycling: 1. Remove all caps on bottles 2. Sort all glass bottles beforehand. Don't do the sorting at the recycler as the facility is not the place you really want to do such. You just want to bring in your recyclables and leave. 3. Bag your recyclables. That may seem obvious but I've seen customers bring in boxes of recyclables that have not been sorted. 4. Keep an eye on your car and be sure to lock your doors as this is a prime location for thieves to steal from your car as there are lot of people moving about and most people are focused on their task. You can't rely on others to watch your car. Thieves blend in here quite easily. 5. Check your Yelp schedule for hours of operation as RRR Recycle has different schedules for different locations. One might not be open on Sunday. 6. Monitor your recyclables for their value beforehand so that you don't get shorted big time. And if you feel that you have been shorted, you need to let them know. 7. This location has an odd entrance. The other opening is an exit. If you are approaching the location heading towards Waikiki, turn right as soon as you see the opening. read more

The workers here are too lazy. I googled their hours of operations and 12:30 - 1:00 pm is their scheduled lunch. I came in at around 12:19 pm and they are already close for lunch. I told them it's not even 12:30 and they are already close for lunch break? I didn't even have that much of plastic bottles to recycle and they couldn't get it anymore and instead they will make me wait for them to finish eating? I dread the times when I have to take my bottles and cans in for recycling. I dread it so much that I only do it once a year or until all my bottles/cans take up to much space outside. Recycling usually means having to rebag all the dirty, sticky, bug infested recycleables and taking them to some ghetto location where the workers barely speak English while waiting behind the Batu head selling cans to get his next fix. So usually I try to look around for the easiest most spot as possible. Living in town allows me a bunch of different options but this time I choose a new spot for me called RRR Recycle on Kapahulu. Located in the big empty parking lot Directly across from Irifune and right next door to Side Street inn, I was stoked to fine tons and tons of easy to get to parking. For some reason all the usual redemption places I go to have the worst possible parking lots and most of them barely have parking at all. I guess they are too used to the crack heads carrying their big 33 gallon bag crushed cans that they don't care about the people who have to drive. Anyways again this place choke choke parking. Probably 30 stalls. I think normally its for its used for paid parking for all the office building nearby. So as I unloaded my 8 bags of recycleables and then started to sort. This place I should mention only has one dude working but things went pretty smoothly. They had about 50 big trash cans to sort all your things into. Even though there was only 1 guy working the lines were never more then 3 people long and everyones transaction went pretty quick(this was at 1pm on a Sunday). The sole worker was cool, friendly and talkative to all the "customers". The only thing he really mentioned to me was that I shouldn't fill the 33 gal trash cans full of coors light bottles all the way because then it gets to heavy for him to lift. After all of it was weighed and scaled I got my money from the automatic atm machine(super cool) and left. This place is definetly my new recycling center of the future if only because of the super easy parking, nice location and friendly workers. read more

Yelp does it again! I was looking for an alternative to our former recycle place on Waialae Ave. which was a real PAIN due to the limited parking and unpleasant staff, etc. Checked out Yelp this Saturday and headed down to RRR Recycle on Kapahulu. As previous reviews stated this facility is very good. Plenty of parking and space to unload and sort your recyclables. Staff was very assistive and made the entire process much more pleasurable. Another nice thing is that the wide open lot affords lots of airflow and tradewinds keeping the expected aroma and flying insects in check! If you go there it helps to pre-sort you wares: Aluminum cans, plastic HI5 (must remove caps), beer bottles by color (brown, green and clear). Other recycle glass such as wine bottles, mayo jars etc. can all be combined. My wife and I drove in with a truck full of cans and bottles. We were out of there PDQ with cash in hand. Check it out. RRR on Kapahulu is worth the visit. read more

I like this place, but I haven't been to other locations to compare it to. Went twice, on the weekend and was fortunate to have been there at times when it wasn't super busy - so didn't have to wait too long. The staff were helpful and pretty efficient, they helped us right away when they were available and the transaction to receive cash for our bottles & cans was quick. You sort everything yourself first by type (cans in one green trash bin, plastic bottles in another, glass bottles separated by color) then the staff take it and put it in another bin to weigh. The parking lot is pretty big, so we were able to park fairly close to the bins, so we didn't have to carry our recyclables too far. It seems it can get pretty busy at times though. The hours are pretty convenient, open morning until late afternoon. read more

We usually go to Kapiolani but its close today due to construction. So we went to kapahulu. Oh boi! This one is wwaaaaayyy better! ---Parking is huge and no lines at all! ---its open! Less noise compare to kapiolani branch. ---high tech! They have touch screen! Which made it faster! This is the only recycle center I go to besides the machines under the state Capitol building (which consistently breaks down). I've been here maybe 7 times and almost every time the young lady working here helps me with my bottles and cans. She is probably the nicest person in the whole state to be honest. She jokes, makes small talk, helps me sort the things and even takes the caps off for me since I come with like four bags of goods. The other workers on the other hand tend to ignore me and pretend I don't exist. Straight out of his mouth he said if ur a girl ur in luck but if not ur on your own (in regards to helping u sort). Helping out girls by all means is nice of u and the right thing to do but y not just help everyone that comes to recycle and not make doing a good deed exclusive... Anyways, this location works fast and uses a scale to measure everything. The receipt is itemized and all u do is sign off on it. They want all the caps off the bottles and recently they require the glass bottles to be sorted by color (green, brown, clear). There is always parking in the lot but beware of the potholes and uneven surfaces. Also I've actually witnessed people being overprotective over their cans here. "That's my can!!!" said a lady when a homeless (ya they come here too) picked up her can on the ground. read more
