What used to be a table service restaurant is now a food truck as they begin their rebuild. There are picnic tables with umbrellas out on the former footprint allowing waterside dining. The food, shrimp basket and Oyster basket with macaroni and cheese, cheese grits and friee. The shrimp were fat and juicy wirh a nice light breading. The spice mix reminded me of KFC. the fries, Crinke cut and crispy were a table favorite. The oysters were bland. My companion said they had little flavor ocer the breading. The cheese grits were tasty, but the biggest disappointment was the Mac & cheese. It was oily and tasted like institutional (school, hospital) food. There wasn't a long wait, bur be aware, summer is here and if you're out doors, get you some insect repellant. Gnats are aggressive. read more

The food was decent overall -- I enjoyed the hamburger, fries, and okra. However, the service left a lot to be desired. The woman taking orders made me feel like I was an inconvenience just for being there. Her attitude was noticeable enough that another customer after me actually asked if he had done something to upset her. Her response was simply that it was a long day -- which, while understandable, doesn't make for a good customer experience. On top of the attitude, there was a serious lack of communication about what was unavailable. They were out of several items, including bottled water. Most frustratingly, I ordered the peel-and-eat shrimp and wasn't told until after I received my food that they were out of cocktail sauce. Without it, the shrimp were inedible to me -- I ended up throwing them away. That information should have been shared at the time of ordering. This was one of the only dining options available on a Monday night, so we made it work. But the poor service, lack of communication, and wasted food made the overall experience fall short. Roy's restaurant in Steinhatchee is one of those iconic places. I grew up in as a child, youth and young adult. It's right down the road from where my mother's restaurant the "ideal fish camp" used to stand. Now it's a boat ramp !Sadly, since the last hurricanes, Roy's has sadly been relegated to a food truck parked where the old restaurant used to be. The old restaurant will hopefully be back soon and they will be back to their great operations. The last meal I had there was a double cheeseburger (no bun) and coleslaw, and it was actually very good! In times past the fried fish, especially the mullet, and grouper was always an excellent choice. The service out of the Roy's Food Truck, is what would be expected from a food truck! It's not bad, and the people are great. The next time I'm in Steinhatchee, I will most likely visit Roy's! Last time I was here about 15 years ago. Roy's hasn't changed much. Service is good but when they are busy expect to wait on your food. We first had lunch and took advantage of the fresh salad bar. Good selections of vegetables and salads. But the mashed potato salad is the winner. Great deal for less than $9. We came back for dinner it was busy. Drinks are good. They have a full bar. There is an outdoor patio overlooking the river to hang out while you wait. We ordered the crab corn chowder and it was good. If you order a main dinner it comes with that great salad bar. We ordered the pick 4 seafood meal. OMG. Too much food. The flounder was huge. Shrimp cooked good. Blackened scallops were ok . They weren't very hot. Crab cake pretty good. The baked potato was very good. We took home a full meal. Beautiful view of the river and good food. Just be prepared to wait. read more

Roy's was the last restaurant I had a meal with both my grandparents at. When we visited Live Oak to see them, it was the place we went to dinner, and that's about an hour drive, mind you. Very friendly place. 1st visit-Chantelle was extremely warm and personable. Served us at the pace we indicated. The decor and general atmosphere is upscale homey. Tasteful but not snooty. Pretty inside with great views of the water. The food was great. Nice to have a choice of "naked" wings. The stuffed flounder was extremely well prepared. Also the hush puppies were nice and crispy on the outside and soft, flavorful and hot on the inside. Sounds silly but the broccoli was awesome. Not only was the texture perfect but it was seasoned just right. Often in restaurants, the veggies are an afterthought and over cooked and either under or over seasoned. Not so here. 2nd visit-Taylor was gracious, attentive, & all southern sweetness. The onion rings were some of the best we've had. Flaky batter that does not leave fingers with a greasy film. Hot upon arrival. The burger was good and as a burger should be. The crab chowder is a peasant surprise. Corn adds a very welcome slightly sweet crunch and the crab is plentiful. I apologize but I did not love this place. There's not many restaurants to choose from in this area and Roy's should do better. Poor service and then more waiting for more poor service seemed to be a norm here. Yes they were busy but a quick stop at the table was never done unless we asked. They have a salad bar which is unique these days. Sadly, there was nothing worth mentioning at the salad bar, though. I ordered the NY Strip with a baked potato and did not finish it because it tasted like fake grill taste as opposed to a nicely marinated prime steak. There was also a tasteless roll on the plate. After a few bites I decided the calories and carbs were not worth it. I won't return and do not recommend Roy's. I am so sorry to say that but I just don't recommend it due to the service, taste and price. I should have cooked in our condo. Usually I can find the good in most . However under this management I cannot. The good at one time was the Best. Now not so. The quality and quantity have failed to be consistent. The hours of operation is iffy. So if you drive the 40 miles believing they will be opened as hours are listed, well they may not be. Stopped in for a late lunch after a day of fishing with local guide, Tony Mathis (YKnotFish.com). Super friendly service, and bar drinks were outstanding. We enjoyed a classic margarita and the "Sleazy Weezie," both highly recommended. For entrée we shared a shrimp and grouper combo, fried of course, as the creator intended. You can also enjoy their ample salad bar, and a cup of the Kickin' Crab & Corn Chowder is a winner. Note: Our most recent visit was in April, during the idyllic peace and quiet before the Scallop season crowd descends upon Steinhatchee by the thousands. If you are visiting between July 1 and Labor Day, plan to pack your patience. Like every other eatery in the area during that time, expect lines, long waits, and plenty of noise. read more

Really solid choice the in Steinhatchee area. Of the restaurants we visited in the area, this was my favorite. The decor was updated, the service was efficient and the food was delicious. It can get crowded but if you put your name in, they will text you when your table is ready so you can walk the docks or just hang out nearby. Locals tell me the food selection her is limited and there are more choices other than seafood at other restaurants, but I beg to differ. I came for seafood and I was not disappointed. Coconut Shrimp - heavily battered, large and delicious, solid choice Scallops - the local bay scallops, plentiful, seasoned well and tender Mullet - not something you find on the menu often, so if you like it, get it. Seafood Platter - scallops, deviled crabs, fish, shrimp which i thought were terrific. I got mine grilled and you cannot pick and choose so the oysters came grilled too and they were not as stellar as the rest of the fish. Hush Puppies - I am not a hush puppy fan, but these were light fluffy and delicious. They do hush puppies proud. Burger - when you have just had too much seafood (posh, can there be such a thing?) this is your order. During season, this wait time can be hours but i have to say i really enjoyed it. It took 3 hours for a family of four to get seated, order, and leave. The waitress was overwhelmed with tables and consequently we were ignored, we didn't receive our entire meals, and the manager made excuses when we asked to speak with her about the poor service and the fact we didn't receive everything ordered. I don't understand the previous reviews, but for what it's worth for the small town it's in, everything was delicious! My host and server Ciera were delightful and sweet. Our Don Julio margarita and Bulleit Old Fashioned were made right. The Gator Bites were the best I've had all year. The Chicken Strip Sandwich was crispy and fresh. The Blackened Salmon was delicious. And the Sweet Potato Fries were great! Scenic outside seating on the River as well. It does get pretty busy during dinner time. Roy's has been on my husband's bucket list for several years and today was the day! We got really lucky and had a picture perfect day to sit outside and enjoy fresh seafood. I had the oyster soup and broiled lunch shrimp basket. Both were tasty and just enough for lunch. My husband had a lunch portion of the shrimp roll and it came with house made chips. The service was good and we didn't experience any of the wait times noted in some reviews. Just be aware that the staff and patrons are not adhering to any COVID-19 restrictions. I actually thought Roy's was better than the three out of five stars that Yelpers gave it. I ordered the blackened red snapper and it was amazing. It was not dry, seasoned well, moist, great portion. Yes, the salad bar is nothing special. But I just enjoyed going to any salad bar post Covid. It was not terrible, and it had fresh vegetable options. Loved the cole slaw. We also had the fried scallops, and they were pretty good. The location is very entertaining as it sits right on the water. We were able to watch the scallopers come in from the day, and even saw the game warden pulling people over. I was fully prepared that it would take a while as a lot of Yelpers posted that it was slow. We just sat back and enjoyed ourselves. This is by far one of my favorite seafood restaurants. As a native Floridian, I confess I am a seafood snob! Those big chains that deal in frozen meats labeled fresh are trash! This place has a culture of its own. If you are a local of one of the hundreds of thousands of fisherman or women to visit Steinhatchee, then you know about Roy's and probably wear their merchandise! It's a classic piece of native Floridian culture! I have been going to Roy's since I was a little boy. They always have fresh, local caught fish. Nothing is frozen ever! One of my personal favorites is the classy fried flounder sandwich! I'm telling you, if I lived closer to this place, I would be much fatter! A local favorite is the bay scallops when they are in season. These are harvested on the Florida flats around Steinhatchee. My suggestion is to get them blackened. Be warned, these are addictive! The view is one of my favorites. The building sits over the Steinhatchee River and overlooks the salt marshes. There is also a deck where you can eat as wild egrets and pelicans cruise up and down the river! This place is truly gorgeous. My first time here and in Steinhatchee. The restaurant is located right on the river. It offers great sunset views from inside and on the outside deck. There are plenty of tables and booths to accommodate small and large parties. I started with a craft IPA. I wasn't sure so the waitress brought me a sample to confirm my selection. The appetizers were fried mozzarella sticks and fried calamari. Both were very good. I ordered the seafood combination platter broiled. It came with shrimp, deviled crab and a filet of Swai. I got broccoli on the side and it came with a choice of a dinner roll or the hush puppies. I went for the hush puppy and wasn't disappointed. I think it was the best hush puppy I have ever had!! This dish came with an unlimited salad bar. Usually I am not a big fan of these all you can eat salad bars but it had some good selections. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. She checked on us regularly and brought boxes when we could not finish. I would have given this a five however they need a few more healthily options other then fried or just broiled. first the good; the potatoe salad was excellent and the sweet tea was good too. next the bad: five of us ordered about $200 worth of seafood platters, appetizers and chowder. The fried seafood managed to be both dry and greasy. overcooked and over salted. Basically not fit to eat. The grits were cold (as well as most of the rest of our food), congealed, and the cook forgot to add salt, or perhaps they ran out. I had chowder which was pretty decent, but tasted an awful lot like Amy's soup. It took a long time to get our food (had to cool first, I guess), the server forgot some items -twice and service was painfully slow. To top it all off, within minutes of leaving the restaurant, the gut bomb that was my meal went off. read more
