Royce is a Japanese chocolate confections brand and is one of my favorite 'branded' chocolates. Forget the big names like Godiva and Lucillus - if you're like me and prefer chocolate that's a little less sweet, then Royce is the one for you!
One of my favorite things from Royce is the Nama chocolate. If you're familiar with Meiji's Melty Kiss, this is kind of what Nama tastes like - it has a really nice and soft melt-in-your-mouth texture. The chocolate is really smooth too, and actually has a little bit of a bitter undertone which I really appreciate, because cocoa itself isn't supposed to be super sweet. The Nama chocolate comes in a bunch of flavors, and they're split into two categories - the ones with liquor, and the ones without. The ones with liquor - at least, the 'au lait' one, doesn't have much of a liquor taste at all. I ate a lot of it when I was a kid and didn't even know that there was liquor in it! This one is the original flavor and it's also my favorite. There's a Nama chocolate infused with VSOP Hennessey and another with champagne - I've not tried these though. I've tried a sample of the matcha Nama, which is really good! The matcha taste is pretty strong and I've actually been meaning to buy a box for myself sometime.
Besides the Nama chocolate, the baton cookies and the chocolate wafers are great too. I've tried the chocolate potato chips, and those aren't so good - it's a very weird taste; the chocolate drowns out the taste of the chip but the saltiness of it still lingers, if that makes sense. I wouldn't recommend this!
One thing that's great about Royce is that you're allowed to ask for samples of most of the stuff to do a taste test before you decide to buy it. This is great, so you don't end up with a box of something you find out you don't even like! read more
