In a word - I'm in macaron heaven. Longer version (for the brave)- What's better than wandering the streets of Hong Kong and accidentally bumping into a macaron shop? Wandering down the street and find Pierre Herme's macaron shop. I thought I'm not seeing right, this place is forever in my heart- the best macarons out there. With seasonal flavors and all time favorites they always have the right macaron for everyone. Took a box of 7 with some new flavors to try - and they were all amazing, absolutely amazing. The box is given with a bag of ice to preserve the temperature in this warm and humid city, not sure how helpful it was, but it's a nice gesture. When the macarons are in front of my eyes I kinda forget what I want... The ones I had - Vanilla, Black currant, rose and rose petal, rose lychee and raspberry, rose and quince, and two seasonal flavors which I'm not sure what they actually were - anyway, they were good but not as good as the ones I've mentioned. It was a refreshing surprise and I ran out of funds instantly, totally worth it!!!!!!!

I came back again... This time for almost entirely just rose petal... Delicious!

The place for macarons in HK. Amazingly Parisian, complete with snobby employees who were super rude to us. Despite that, I got the box of seven (the minimum) to try out their insane flavors. Each bite was a taste of heaven as my eyes unconsciously closed and my head lifted just a tad. My favorite? Rose petal - it's a must try. Note: They don't have all the flavors in HK - some are only found in Paris. Note2: They only last for 4 days...in case you wanted to bring some back home.

FINALLY! Move over Laduree and my local favorite Miette. Pierre Herme is the BOSS. Classic and innovative flavors, with the smoothest creamiest ganache. THREE different types of dark chocolate for those looking for options! Meringue could be a little more crisp like Laduree, but the taste trumps all. I had wished they gave the option of purchasing individual macarons, instead of boxes only (7 for ~ $28 USD - waayyy more expensive than in Europe), but I ended up regretting I didn't get the box of 12! The box didn't last 3 hours, even though I had a pretty big meal right before I stopped by for my layover in HK. I also got a bar of their sea salt 68% dark - stellar. YUM. Why dear God WHY do you not open an outpost in the US?

“As much as I appreciate the tradition and history that Laduree possesses, Pierre Herme is the best in the world for macarons.”

Ok I have to admit that I don't know much about birthday cakes and high-end desserts... Every time…read moreI'm responsible for buying the birthday cake for a friend's birthday, I'll start picnicking. **** PANIC MODE **** OH SHOOT I need to buy a cake where can I buy a cake what kind of favorite I should get what price range is acceptable and not too crazily expensive or embarrassingly cheap? OMG OMG OMG Here were the options: 1. 50/50 2. Call a friend 3. Ask the audience Well then I did text a friend. **** PANIC MODE ENDED **** She gave me a name "Paul Lafayet". I don't even know who he is. I searched about it and found a store in IFC. Great, called and made sure they were open and would have ready-to-buy celebration cakes. For a usual store in IFC, opening till 9pm is very promising. I got to there, and it's a rather small shop, sharing with LGB. It's great that they "standard" cakes were not so standard - they were all pretty impressive. I got the Chocolate Charlotte. All cakes have one standard price HKD$320, it's on the high end of cake's price range (I think?!). But I got a free Crème Brûlée from HSBC platinum card, so yeah, I was pretty happy with that. We served the Crème Brûlée first as the birthday cake to the birthday girl, as a prank, and surprised her with the actual Chocolate Charlotte. We all loved it. We have all gone into the situation before where the cake is way too big as an after-dinner dessert, even for sharing. But this cake got a perfect size. Staff was nice enough to notice I was buying a birthday cake and offered to put a small "Birthday Cake" tag on the cake. And the taste. OH. Now I get it. The chocolate favor was so good that it wasn't too sweat, but also not too dark (dark chocolate should never be allowed on a birthday cake, imho). The chocolate base and lady fingers were both very crunchy and made the whole cake a good mix of different texture. Loved it. And I'll now remember the name Paul Lafayet.
