I had a real taste for Royal Chicken and even drove 20 minutes to get there. They open at 11:30, and I showed up at 11:33 -- only to find out the grease wasn't even hot yet. The guy working the register, told me it would be a 30-minute wait and do I mind waiting. I stated, I don't mind but why didn't anyone come early to get things ready? He replied, they don't get paid to come early. Seriously? That's how you run a food business? I've been in the culinary industry for years, and I know there's always someone setting up before opening -- manager, owner, or staff -- to make sure things are ready when customers arrive. No one should have to wait 45 minutes after opening just to get chicken. And to make it worse, I watched the employee use his mouth to open a Kool-Aid package instead of using scissors. Completely unsanitary. Now I'm wondering -- do they even wash their hands back there? If this is how you're doing business, I don't want to come back. I try to support local spots, but too many get comfortable once they have regulars, and that's when standards start slipping. Between the pothole-filled parking lot and the lack of readiness inside, the whole experience was disappointing. Now, to be fair -- once the food was finally ready, the chicken was piping hot, cooked in fresh grease, and actually very good. Just visited Royal's for lunch today. Arrived at 11:30am, received my food at 12:15pm - a FREAKING 45 minutes later!!!! The chicken was good, therefore I will give credit where credit is due. I was told over the phone it will be a 20-25min wait. I waited another 25mins and went in myself to ask for my money back. Then I was told the order was being prepared now. On Thursday I called in an order that was supposed to be fresh and when I got home the fries were burnt and only 1 piece of the chicken was fresh. The other pieces were old and dry. I called the establishment and the worker kept saying I don't know ma'am, so I asked to speak to the owner and he wouldn't come to the phone but offered me my money back. First trip here was great, the chicken was flavorful, juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. My second trip was a nightmare. I called in an order for family that was in town for the weekend. I was told there would be a 15 min wait but when my boyfriend arrived an employee informed him that the owner forgot to put the order in because he was busy arguing with his wife outside while all the orders were piling up. Experience - I ordered a 3 piece dark dinner and a 3 piece catfish fillet dinner at 6:20 pm over the phone. Once I got there I waited in line and once I got to the window, the nice lady took my order over again because I assume they don't keep track of call in orders. I had to wait until 7:18 pm to finally get my food. While you are waiting, be prepared to fight numerous flies and look at crumbs on multiple tables from not being cleaned off.
