Good apple fritters here guys. Lots of apple chunks. I hope nothing changes. Pretty much one of the few things I'll buy donut wise.

Our picks for today: 6 crullers, a Boston Cream, a jelly-filled, an old-fashioned, and an apple fritter

I'm not sure why my review from several years ago was removed by Yelp, but it's time to write an updated review anyway: So glad Royal Pastries & Doughnuts is still open and rocking their donuts! For about a decade now, we've been coming here for classic varieties of donuts when I don't feel like driving all over OC to get the "best" of each specific type of donut or gourmet varieties. We happily choose Royal for our general donut needs since their donuts are always solid, they always include a few extra donuts and/or donut holes with every purchase, we live nearby, and they are a small family-owned business. But Royal is actually my pick in OC for the best French crullers--they contain just the right amount of soft, airy, eggy dough in the inside; crispness on the outside; and yummy glaze like strawberry, maple, and chocolate. You can really taste the egginess, which is my favorite thing about crullers that's lacking at so many other donut joints. Their hours are a bit limited (listed in the store window as 4:30-10:30am everyday), the Yelp-listed phone number no longer works, and the storefront is a bit drab. But if you are an early riser, live nearby, want a consistently solid donut joint, and/or especially enjoy crullers, then definitely give Royal a shot!

Stopped to grab a couple donuts on a weekday morning around 9am. It's an old school "dollar-a-doughnut" type of shop. Not a huge selection but enough to make things interesting. Once inside (there are a couple tables) a grizzled donut man of few words appeared from the back room and took my order: an old fashioned and one with colorful sprinkles. He put them in a small bag, I paid and was on my way. As I walked out to my car I thought the bag felt more full than it should be and a quick glance inside showed he had tossed in a plain cake donut and a couple of glazed donut holes, no charge! Very nice. The donuts were okay; The old fashioned was rather dry but the other was fairly fresh. The donuts holes were really soft and delicious though - very fresh! I wished I had bought a big bag of those!

Royal pastries and donuts I would say ties with DK donuts on El Toro Road and Lake Forest the donuts are excellent small but service is great does have a drive-through makes it very handy I also my dad they make one of the best hamburgers and cheeseburgers and well-done french fries in town they're right up there with the all American burger place on Maryland and Ridge Road outstanding if you got time go through there you will go back Tom b

We got donuts from here this morning. They are so bad. Boxed store donuts are better. Not sure why such a high star rating overall.

The location of…read morethis well-known Japanese/French bakery was unusual in that it's isolated in a corner of the El Camino Plaza. I had expected the business to be in a more high volume area, however a benefit of their corner spot was that the parking lot had plenty of spaces. There's no indoor seating, but outdoor tables were set up along the north and east perimeters of the building. I was by myself at this latest visit, and it was close to the end of the day so the inventory was quite depleted. There was no line at all which was not a surprise. The famous Strawberry Croissants and prepackaged items were on refrigerated display to the left when you walked in. As the service counter rounded a corner, there were more fresh baked goods on display before you reached a register. Across from the registers were shelves containing bags of fresh bread products. I bought a Strawberry Croissant, a Sticky Bun, a Ham and Cheese Croissant, and an Apple Croissant. The quality of the pastry dough was very good, and I could see why the Strawberry Croissant was a favorite with the customers. The croissants were light and flakey, and the powdered sugar added a delicate topping to the strawberry version. If I were to rate on just the Strawberry Croissant, then it would be five stars. My overall rating was downgraded because of the customer traffic flow. The lines can be optimized so that if you wanted to buy a six-pack of the Strawberry Croissants and/or anything prepackaged, then a separate queue should be arranged for those customers. The cafeteria trays were of limited use if you were not getting a large number of items. As you advanced in the queue, other products had to be requested from a worker behind the counter and then those were not placed on the tray. Ultimately, I think they can configure the operation to more efficiently handle the higher volume periods of the day.

Scratch Bakery Cafe is located in a big plaza with Trader Joe. There are many people outside sitting and eating. You order up front and pay before getting a table. Right when you walk in, there are tons of bags filled with English Muffins, however, they are called Manna buns for trademark reasons. The Manna buns come in plain, sesame, and everything seasonings. I ended up going with plain. The bun is super yummy. I made eggs and avocado sandwich with the bun and couldn't wait to eat them every day. They are pretty big, so I only eat half. They also sell bakery items. I got an oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that was delicious and a Banana's Foster Knock Knock. I absolutely love this and so happy the lady suggested it. It was like an upgraded ding dong but like a banana nut cake and chocolate. Overall, if you're looking for English muffins or some sweet this is definitely your place to try.

Of the $100 dollars I spent getting a variety of goodies, here's my breakdown: The ding dong things- way too chocolatey rich with minimal cream filling, never again The Chicago bran muffin delicious, sticky with nuts and raisins I think The cinnamon rolls, meh, never again, dry not expected The buns, made hamburgers at home they were actually better than expected! Soft light The cream puffs they tasted decent but left an afterfilm of the full fat cream in the center so never again The strawberry custard croissants were my favorite, this outshined them all! If am ever in the area I would get those for sure. But for the prices being so much, not sure why people frequent this place.

Food: 2/5 There was a case filled with pastries and I decided to try the beef and potato as it looked popular based on its limited supply. There were no prices available so I assumed, the size it was, that the total would be around $7. However, this pastry was almost $14! I was disappointed by the price and lack of flavor inside. The pastry was buttery but not as flaky as I'd hoped for. Service: 3/5 Walking into the bakery I was glad to be welcomed inside and asked if I had any questions by a young lady. After deciding what I wanted to order I waited in line. The older gentleman at the register was not as friendly. I felt rushed when I was ordering and it felt as if he didn't want to be there.
