My mom and I tried Royal India tonight for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. Having dated an Indian for 10 yrs, I always have low expectations, but found the menu options to be more authentic and a wider variety of the type of dishes I prefer. I had the Malai Kofta (fried vegetable balls in a tomato curry, similar to butter chicken), which is one of my favorites and often hard to find. It was delicious! They also had Aloo Paratha (potato stuffed flaky bread), again a favorite and delicious! I only wish they had one or two South Indian dishes. But I will definitely be back!! read more

My family has been coming here for years and it never disappoints. The service is also extremely friendly and the ambiance is authentic. I would love to rate Royal India higher but it takes only one rat in the kitchen, so to speak, to ruin a great experience. My wife and I stopped in to Royal India to celebrate our wedding anniversary due, in part, to a rave review we received about its sister location in Salt Lake City. Always seeking a new adventure in food, and knowing very little of Indian cuisine, this seemed a great location. Arriving at about 7:50 p.m. there was no one in the front of this small restaurant to greet us. But seeing a few other tables full we waited a moment to be greeted by a tan-skinned gentlemen who showed us to our table. Sure, it's just an assumption of nationality, but the fellow looked Indian, so we thought, "Well there's a good sign this place is authentic." (This was the last time we'd see him.) Soon we were attended by a silver haired Caucasian man who, while not cheery, was not unfriendly either. Explaining we were relatively new to Indian food we asked for his recommendations. We ordered everything suggested. The vegetable pakora (a seasoned vegetable fritter) appetizer was wonderful. Delicate, but made all the more light and memorable with the sweet chutney and mint cilantro lime (raita) sauces. Our meal of two kinds of curry was extremely delicious accompanied by jasmine rice. (We liked the coconut lamb Kurma best.) On the side we enjoyed the tandoor bread, Naan, buttered with ghee. (If we got it again we'd save the money and get the plain Naan; their ghee doesn't add the richness it should.) The portions were a little small for the price ($30 plus drinks for two) but taking some extra helpings of the rice allowed us to stretch the servings. It was a decent albeit not great value, but flavor was wonderful. The only thing we missed is that the meal was very light on vegetables--which seemed very out of place from what I thought I knew of Indian cuisine. Afterward, lingering over conversation --like a few other diners-- we finally entertained some attention from our server. We spent a few minutes discussing our enjoyment from his recommendations, Indian cuisine, learning about the curries they blend on site, and picking out some pointers for dishes in the future. Closing up the pleasant evening, he said, "I have one more pointer for you when you come again." At this point we were hanging on his every word, thinking that we passed muster enough to be deserving of an insider's guide to the best dishes in the future. "You might want to come earlier next time. We close at nine. The kitchen staff has all gone home." We were stunned. Shocked. Flabbergasted. And it was only 9:05. We weren't even the only persons left in the place albeit there was only one other table still occupied. If I could have taken back my tip I would have! An otherwise wonderful evening in wonderful company with wonderful food ruined by a poorly mannered oaf of a server. At 9:10 we were in the car and on our way. We're definitely won over to eating more Indian cuisine in the future. We just never will be eating again at the Royal India. read more

I'm happy to report that our friends at Royal India have made much progress in their service department. We've visited multiple times in the last few weeks with exceptional response from the staff. The food at Royal India is fantastic. I am a fan of the Kurma and the lamb is tender, flavorful, and better than most that I have had in the valley. The different heat levels give ordering options and can range from soup to burn your socks off. These guys are awesome to work with when it comes to ordering around the menu. The wife likes a mix of the chicken and vegetable masala to add some flavor levels. They don't blink an eye when she orders it and it always comes out to order. Lots of appetizers to choose from and several desserts to top it off if you can fit it in. read more

De like the bread. This is not my type of Indian food. We went there to try a new place. Specially with the good reviews, but it's not the real stuff. We ordered samosas, chicken vindaloo, nan bread, riata and a soup. All but the dread was off to us. The vindaloo we asked for medium spice, when we it it was a tomato sauce and after letting our server know, she offered us a side of hot sauce. We said no, so they took it back and added some hot sauce, it was bad. No Indian spices used. Not going back, I'm sure it works for people who have not had real Indian food before. read more

This place is really good, I recommend the lamb curry. One thing I was disappointed in was the garlic nan. Instead of being loaded with minced garlic, it what seemed to be garlic powder or a mixture of garlic powder and garlic salt. Overall, the dishes are flavorful and the service is nice. read more

Okay, after going here for many years it's time to do the review. Tonight's meal was as good as I have had there so I have given a five star review, not because they are an overall five star place, but, for the town of Bountiful, a food desert, this is truly one of the best options. And for overall quality of Indian food, it is one of the most consistent in the Salt Lake metro area. We had the lamb coconut korma and fish curry, which tonight was made with mahi mahi. Both were flavorful and had a quality sauce unique to their respective dish. The mahi mahi was ordered spicy, but was a bit mild, typical for "spicy" dishes in Davis county. The garlic nan was flavorful as was the basmati rice which came on the side. After at least seven visits here, I can say that the Royal India restaurant does a fine job with its cuisine and is one of the best places to eat in Bountiful. read more

Pretty dang good. I got the butter chicken as well as the lamb curry with the garlic naan. Man the naan was huge as well as pretty great price for a big piece! We got two curries and the naan for about 35 bucks which is such a good deal. I will definitely return the Royal India when I have a craving for curry. read more

Royal India is a nice Bountiful establishment and I recommend the lamb curry. The dish is perfectly balanced with tender boneless lamb and an earthy curry sauce. Ordering medium on the spice level provides the right amount of warmth from their combination of curry and garam masala spices. Garam Masala translates to "hot spices" and is a common Indian cuisine blend of ground spices including coriander, cumin, cinnamon, etc. I've experienced authentic Indian food where spice levels are not an option when ordering and only a fire hose of milk, sugar, and honey can provide any type of reprieve from the every-increasing levels of lava (aka, heat), so I slowly indulged in Royal India's fresh spices, deep curry aroma , and the melt-in-your-mouth lamb. The naan is baked in a traditional tandoor clay oven, however, their style is too thin and crisp for my taste. Other Indian/Pakistani restaurants I often visit have more substance to their naan with a thicker and chewer texture. The onion naan is good with rich flavor and pairs nicely to the lamb curry. The garlic naan is said to be the most popular but I find the added garlic has less flavor than a dollar-store package of garlic powder. Services is good and almost to the point of overbearing. I was asked no less than 12 times how my meal was. Although I like my water being filled every time it is half empty -- or half full for the optimistic among us -- I do like to enjoy my meal without constant inquiries of its quality. read more

Finally tried this little gem after nearly three years of living in Bountiful. Absolutely loved it! The food was fresh and came in a timely manner, service was great, restaurant was very clean - all things I love in an Indian Restaurant ;) I guess our only complaint was that my husband ordered med/hot and his wasn't very spicy. We tried Royal India for the first time on a whim a couple of nights ago and were pleasantly surprised at the food quality and good service. Yay for good Indian food in Bountiful! We moved here last fall, and always love finding good food that doesn't require a drive to Salt Lake. Value: I always think a la carte prices at Indian restaurants seem high when I'm ordering, but those deceptively small-looking silver dishes actually hold a lot of food. We took leftovers home and were satisfied with our bill of $50 for three orders of Naan, an extra side of rice, Chutneys, Butter Chicken, Chicken Coconut Kurma, Vegetable Biryani, and a Sweet Lassi. (Though I think the price per piece for plain naan is steep at $1.95. I'd prefer to see it cheaper and/or included with entrees, but all other items were priced at a good value.) The lassi was much larger than I've received at other restaurants, and a bit thicker. We were offered additional rice to take home in our to-go boxes, which I thought was nice. Taste: Butter Chicken is creamy and tomato-based and includes large chunks of chicken breast, while Chicken Coconut Kurma used thigh meat in a rich and complex sauce. Both were amazingly delicious, without tasting the exact same as at any other restaurant. The Vegetable Biryani was stuffed with large chunks of a good variety of crisp-tender veggies (carrots, peas, potatoes, green peppers, onions, cauliflower). My husband thought their basmati rice was some of his favorite of any Indian restaurant. Service: Service was attentive. We were never left waiting, water was kept full, and the staff was kind in accommodating our young children. We were one of four parties seated in booths at 6:00 on a Wednesday night. One small suggestion: we weren't asked what level of spiciness we would prefer for our dishes. Everything came out extremely mild, with no spice at all. I suppose our selections are some of the traditionally mildest options anyway, and we had kids with us, but we enjoy spicy food and like to be asked. We will return. We eat a lot of Indian food. Royal India was a total let down. Every dish seemed to contain almost the same sauce, and all the vegetables were soft. I don't know if they were frozen or overcooked. Probably both. Here is what we ordered: vegetable pakora - pretty good garlic naan - ok chicken tika masala - very bland aloo gobi - very mushy vegetable korma - way too much sauce, color was very odd, and the vegetables were very mushy gulab jaman - decent Easily the worst Indian food I have had. read more

Family owned restaurant that has provided very good Northern and Southern Indian cuisine for many years. Although the strip mall location might seem rather ordinary, you are taken into another world upon entering this restaurant. Good atmosphere with ample seating and polite service always sets the mood for a great dining experience. Vegetable pakora or onion baji are great starters here, and I wouldn't pass on the opportunity to order Dosa or Uddhapam. Their Peshawari Naan is one of my favorites and goes well with their Vegetable Coconut Korma. Be sure to finish the meal with their Gulab Jamun. read more

I remember when this restaurant opened its doors. I was worried that they would not last, given how many before them had failed on main street. I am glad that they are still open for business. This is the best Indian food in the state. I always enjoy either the chicken curry or the lamb curry, usually with medium spice. Paired with a butter naan, it's delicious, filling, spicy, and reasonably priced. I have had most of the dishes here over the years, and while I am not a fan of vegetarian options, everything is on point and delicious. I'm going to assume that past reviews about service have been taken into consideration by Royal India. We were greeted very promptly and seated in the cozy and ornately decorated dining room. We apologized in advance for our ankle biters, and in response the server brought them bowls of rice without us asking because she could tell they were hungry. I really enjoy their vegetarian choices, this time I ordered the Aloo Mutter (potatoes and peas in a spicy tomato-based sauce.) Comes with their fragrant basmati rice. Had to add an order of naan and garlic naan, vegetable samosas with tamarind chutney, and, of course, a icy cold Diet Coke (woohoo!) K almost always orders the Chicken Tikka Masala, doesn't leave a drop behind. Our drinks always stayed full, our food was fresh and hot, the price made it a great value, and we left very satisfied. I love having some decent food in Bountiful, and Royal India does not disappoint. If you like spicy, order it hot because they tone it down for sensitive palates in the area. This is hands down, the best, most authentic Indian/Pakistani food in Utah. I've tried them all. The only food I've had on the same level is in the U.K., which is no surprise, since India and Pakistan were part of the commonwealth. The dishes from southern India, such as Lamb Madras, are particularly delicious. My personal favorite order is: Lamb Madras, Onion Salad, Peshwari Naan and a Salt Lassi followed on occasion by homemade Indian Pistachio Ice Cream (Kulfi). The owner, Emmanuel Shanthakumar, both procures and cultivates rare Indian spices. The place is a gem! read more

The decor of this place is pretty simple and it's even easy to overlook on Main Street. Don't though. I've lived in bountiful for about two years now but I'm just now getting around to trying this place. We got the coconut kurma and the lamb marsala. It was very good. The prices are a little high for being in bountiful but still worth it. We got a to go box and they gave us each a large serving of rice in the to go boxes. The service was very good. We came here for dinner and over all the service was good and the food was very tasty. The thing I'm not a fan of is: 1. The price, it seemed a little pricey to me for what you got. 2. I really don't think that you should have to pay extra for naan (unless you order a specialty naan). Other then those two complaints I would go back. The flavors of the food were a little different then what I'm used to, but that didn't mean I didn't like it. Also, I really liked the Mango Lassi, it was better then some of the places I've been to. Royal India is a restaurant gem in Bountiful. We have eaten there or gotten their take out more than ten times. The dishes we've enjoyed are coconut korma, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and a few others. We have been more than satisfied with the food. The interior of the restaurant is small and the service can be slow, but the service has never caused us to remove this restaurant from our favorites list. Also, good restaurants in Bountiful are not bountiful, so we can't be too picky. read more
