We rented the suite with jacuzzi. We arrived just before 3PM but the hotel was locked and no answer from the provided phone number. We returned at 3:10 and managed to get in while another party was leaving. We were prepaid and confirmed, but didn't manage to get checked in for 30 minutes. The room was unheated, furniture was a mish mash of incompatible styles. The hotel and room were locked by home style combination locks and the front desk was mostly empty. We've stayed in classic hotels all over the Western world; we can remember only one as limited as this one. read more

I went to the restaurant in the Royal Hotel with my grandma, my sister and her two kids. The service was friendly, although a little slow-paced for my liking. That's just my own personal preference, being from Vancouver where we all feel rushed when going out to eat. This place is more laid-back and casual. Our food arrived in a timely fashion and it was pretty decent - the portion of yam fries with my burger was huge - plenty for sharing with the rest of the table. I prefer to go by my grandma's experience more than mine, because I felt that she is more of the target customer as she lives in the area, not to mention she knows what other places nearby are like in comparison. She loved the soup and sandwich combo and said that the coffee was really good - and as long as my grandma is happy, then I'm happy, too. I liked that the server brought out crayons and colouring pages for my little nephews to entertain them while we waited for our food. It's not a typical place I would end up at, but I enjoyed my lunch. I would really like to give 3.5 stars, but for what it is, I'll bump them up a notch rather than knock one off. This is not fine dining, nor is it a trendy over-priced, establishment. But I wouldn't hesitate to go back with my grandma next time I'm in the area. read more

This was one of the oddest lodgings I've ever stayed at. Not being local, it's definitely on me to not have done my due diligence in investigating Chilliwack a little - and understand that they have horrific drug and property crime issues. The facility cameras at the front counter should have been my first cue. We had arrived after the first cold snap of the season - and the hotel had not yet switched over from air to heat. The room was colder than outside, and the desk staff said that the night shift may know how to handle it (said staff never made his presence known via knock or call). The fix? Commiserating - "yeah, I'm cold, too." and, "you can have extra blankets if you'd like." We stayed in one of the jacuzzi suites. Aside from the haphazard room configuration (okay, I get it, it's old), the decor was decidedly outdated. There was a valiant effort to create a theme, but sponge and crackle paint, old mixed with new furniture - none of it elegant and most of it nonfunctional, clean but very worn and yellowed sheets, dust (and dust, and dust) negated the special touches that were attempted. We really wanted to like it - the fancy folds on the toilet paper, the robes and slippers, the excellent jacuzzi, the breakfast voucher, etc. Unfortunately, the aforementioned issues - along with not smelling good (old bong water and floor polish?) and being marginally soundproofed made for a night that was more infamous than buzzworthy. The attached restaurant where the breakfast voucher was used? I know this might be a separate business, but it bears mentioning.... The coffee was the worst I've ever tasted and every patron near us left food on their plates. I think the biggest disappointment was that every time a minor question or considerable concern was raised to the front desk (both evening and morning), the answer was to have the guest "ask someone else." I found this hotel when researching a place to stay whilst I attended the Barn Burner BBQ Competition. I was drawn to it because it wasn't a standard chain hotel and the pictures on the website showed a unique opportunity to go back in time. Upon arriving the first thing I that hit me when I opened the lobby doors was a familiar old smell. The smell was old wood, old furnishings, that reminded me of a cross between my grandmother's very old home and an old library I used to visit as a child in Georgia. To me it was a comforting smell and I was immediately happy! Checking in was easy and imagine my surprise when I was given an actual key for my room-no key card, a KEY! Very cool! And for booking my stay on their website I was also given a t-shirt as a gift. There is no elevator in the hotel so I made my way up the creaky wooden stairs to my floor. The room was very clean and the attention to keeping the furnishings time period appropriate did not go unnoticed. Brass bed, old wooden dresser and mirror, claw foot tub (right next to the bed), vintage wardrobe and hardwood floors. They did bring in modern amenities such as a hdtv, wifi and a Keurig which I really appreciated. Only downside to my room was the view was dismal- a parking lot and rooftop. I had dinner in the downstairs cafe. I ordered the nachos which was the best I've ever had! Layers of cheese that cover all nachos and loaded with toppings for a very affordable price which was made even better when I received 10% off for being a guest. I ordered a piece of pie and you can tell its homemade. Lots of filling and the crust was actually pretty good (I'm not a crust fan and usually leave it but I ate this one). All in all, I loved this place! I am looking forward to returning next year! Edited to change that they are indeed licensed as per the owner. Must've been an oversight by me. read more

The Royal hotel cafe is fantastic...the all day breakfast menu has regular breakfasts with home made scones and a choice of omelettes, skillets, and eggs Benedict with home made hollandaise sauce! The prices are decent, $6.60 and up, and the service is very good at different friendly. After 11 am you can order liquor, so if you want a beer with breakfast, you can have one. read more

I'm talking about the cafe here. (The hotel has been around for a long time. Refurbished, a great old building, with lots of historic atmosphere and photos. Love the place.) Anyway, the cafe. When you go somewhere at meal time and it's crowded with happy eaters, you're at the right spot! A varied, extensive menu with some nice surprises, ie, Huevos Rancheros Have been there for lunches mostly, and every time have come away more than satisfied, with the good service, and the food. Today, a Caesar Salad, with wonderful home made dressing, and croutons. My wife had a burger and fries, more burger and fixings than bun, and the fries were the best you could ask for. Busy place at noon, but there was no long wait time, I think the servers are the fastest most efficient I've ever seen. Under new management now, I'm told, but it's still one of downtown Chilliwack's best eateries. A nice touch, keeping up with the old atmosphere, the water glasses are small preserve jars with straws. Another unusual touch, no table napkins, instead, rolls of paper towels on special holders are provided. Inventive and serviceable. How often have you had to wipe your hands or clean a child's face with something the size of a tissue. Give this place a try. I'll be back. I've been back several times since my original review. I'm still impressed and enjoy every visit. Food, service, price: all of it remains worth the stars! I'll add one thing further, THEY HAVE THE BEST FRENCH FRIES IN TOWN.! Hands down. The food here is wonderful and the portion sizes decent. I had the 5050 burger which is their burger made with bacon. I thought it was a little too pink but the server told me it was actually the bacon that gave it that color. It was delicious. I loved the old rustic interior. It feels like you're in the 1940's coming in for a meal after a hard stint in the bush mining or logging. The servers were friendly and the ice tea was refreshing. We chose this over the more modern hotel and got a place with a lot more character. An american breakfast with a choice of bacon & eggs or pancakes at the diner/salon was included. If you book it online through booking.com the restored room with hardwood floors, antique furniture and claw-foot tub comes out to $74 for two people per night. read more

My husband and I booked the Royal to host our wedding, and we could not have picked a better venue for us :) we planned the wedding from Alberta and Tanya the wedding coordinator was great about communication, any time there was a potential issue, it was cleared up within minutes! They recommended DJ's and florists which made the planning even easier. Once we got there for the weekend, all our guests staying at the hotel raved about the rooms, the food and quaint rustic character of the building! The beds were so comfy and seriously the food for breakfast and the catering for our wedding reception was phenomenal, as well as the service staff. Front desk staff was great. Stay included a free breakfast, which we were very happy to take. But when we sat down for breakfast the server was blatantly rude to us. No acknowledgement when we said thank you. We walked out and did not receive our free breakfast because of this waitresses demeanor. When exiting the hotel, the woman even had the audacity to give me a glare. 3 stars for front desk staff, otherwise it would have been a 1 Star. read more

Ok I usually do everything I can to promote a downtown business but my last meal raised some serious concerns. My wife is celiac, so it was great that they would make enchiladas with corn tortillas, but when we went last time the waitress told us they couldn't do it. We told her they had done it before, she said no. Then she made a point to come back to the table to tell us that whoever had told us they gave us corn tortillas had lied to us. So they obviously don't mind poisoning their customer's. What if we had a serious peanut allergy and had sent someone to the hospital. Would they have lied again? So disappointed. Thought we would treat ourselves to a breakfast out on Canada Day....apparently there are new owners and unfortunately they cannot hold a candle to the last proprietor. We will NOT be going back. My omelet was inedible, the hash browns were not at all like the wonderful home fries from before, little uniform squares that I think were deep fried. Took most of my breakfast home for the dog, he seemed to enjoy it. What a shame, I love this old hotel and it is right near where we live so a double disappointment. read more

What a charming place. Stayed in a heritage room. The old wood and century stylings were wonderful. Clawfoot tub and sink in the main room and a tiny teeny little 2.5' x 2.5' toilet closet. Bed was comfortable enough, but if you are very particular about the firmness of your mattress, it might not be the best for you. The fluffy comforter was so snuggly! Neighbours upstairs got up early and since there are no carpets on the floors and old floors, it was a little loud. Pleasant staff. Wonderful look back in time. read more
