My family was heading home from a weekend in Perry Hall, Maryland when we made a quick stop at a local Royal Farms convenience store. The moment we pulled in, we were greeted by the store's giant chicken statue standing proudly out front. Of course, we had to take a photo with it--it was too fun to pass up. We stopped in for drinks and a bathroom break and decided to sign up for the Royal Farms rewards app so we can earn points whenever we're back in the area. The store itself was clean, well-organized, and overall a really pleasant place to visit. The customer service we encountered was friendly and welcoming, which made the quick stop even better. We stop by this particular Royal Farms on a relatively regular basis because we are frequently in the area. We have witnessed an extremely fast employee turn over, over the years with most all employees being or having been true short timers. We have seen good staff and bad staff. We have seen staff that appear to care and others who are just looking to have their shift end. Specifics to point out their slushie machine has not worked for going on to four or so weeks! Oftentimes, their chicken has looked like it has sat out for an hour or so. Their potato logs...are hit or miss. We have also noticed that there have been numerous times where a single staff member had been left repeatedly alone for late night busy shifts. This sort of business practice is not only insane and unfair to the lone employee but it is likewise extremely unsafe for them. They did have one staff member though that really stood out. He continually worked the night shift many, many times alone. He was always on top of things. The store itself was always in order and clean under his watch. The chicken was always fresh and in good supply. The potato logs again, were likewise always fresh and plentiful under his watch. We repeatedly saw that he was bombarded with customers placing orders but yet, he was always pleasant and always prepared to provide them with excellent service and meet their needs. Sadly, as of late, we have not seen him there. My guess is that he got overworked and worn down doing so many shifts alone. It does currently appear that he may have been replaced with some new employees who definitely seem unknowledgeable about food preparation, quantities or store maintenance. In its current state between current staff and store maintenance I leave this location a single star with a single suggestion... fix the slushie machine...having it not working for over a month during the hot summer is not only bad business but is ridiculous! read more

I can't believe a store would allow female employees, let alone customers utilize a restroom with no means of the ability to wash their hands. Hand sanitizer alone is not a sure thing to kill germs or keep hands clean. I asked the female attendant how do they wash their hands, since this place does handle food, she said they have hand sanitizer. Cane we say the health department needs to look into this. read more

I was passing through Frederick and stopped at this Royal Farms for chicken. I ordered a 3 piece dark (2 thighs and 1 leg) with large fries for $13.02. (Order 261 at 6:52 p.m. on 10/18/24). I got home (I live 40 minutes from Frederick) to find the guy didn't put in the thigh. How hard is it to make sure such a simple order is correct? I guess too hard. Royal Farms is a chain of gas stations and a quick-stop for sandwiches/deli that has been around since '59. They're known for their famous fried chicken, as it's always prepared with fresh chicken and it's pressure-cooked. There's mini electronic kiosks in front of the chicken section where you add the items you want (there's a separate payment kiosk) - we opted for 1 thigh, 1 drumstick, a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, and an order of their Western fries (potato wedges). The fries were hot, fresh, and super juicy, and the skin had a nice crispiness to it. There are hot sauce packets, but no need for them, as the chicken is flavorful on its own! The mashed potatoes were nice and fluffy, and the gravy seems to be have been made with the chicken drippings - very comforting! The potato wedges were forgettable, as they could have been cooked a bit more and be more seasoned. This seems to be a new addition to Frederick! Here you can fill-up on some petrol and get some fried chicken for your belly before you're on your way home. There's a giant chicken out front! Hilarious photo op. This Royal Farms is super close to 270 and 70 but surprisingly not so busy. The aisles are wide and multiple points of entry prevent crowdedness. The station is clearly new, clean, and the technology is modern and buttons automated. Fuel rates were fairly low by my standards but seem to be consistent with the area. Definitely recommended! read more

Outside always has trash laying around, the coffee station is always dirty and even though I keep giving them the benefit of the doubt every time I order the chicken strips they are always dry. I've been to this gas station a handful of times for the delicious food. The last couple of times have been frustrating. One visit was around 7:30am and another around 4:30pm. They seem totally unprepared for dinner rush. Out chicken and fries. Breakfast time is the same. This place is known for chicken and people come for chicken so not quite sure why it isn't ready at all times. The self checkouts are convenient but become really confusing when the screen is telling you your cards declined (also embarrassing) but the card machine is processing and approved. I live in PA and visit the area often. Gas prices are $.20 less than in PA so thats fine. First time for food here. The fried chicken was really greasy and had a weird flavor. Roys or KFC is better. I ordered a lg mashed potato and gravy. Potatoes were cold - like straight from the fridge cold. My lunch cost $16 - just the food! - and it was extremely disappointing. I am a 43 year old woman with a valid photo ID. The cashier claimed to overhear a conversation between myself and my co worker. Based on what she thought she heard she denied my purchase of tobacco products even though I presented my ID when requested and I was making a purchase for myself. I feel extremely discriminated against. I have never been refused tobacco products based on a conversation "overheard" and find this completely unacceptable. We were both clearly over the age of 18. I signed up as soon as they opened for royal farms rewards and linked my bank account for the fuel discount. I have never gotten a discount. I went to the Royal Farms store on 7402 Shockley Drive, Frederick, Maryland, on Monday 3/15/21, at 130 Pm .I walked in, and I noticed that there was fresh chicken in the bin, so I was excited! The lady at the counter helped me print the ticket, and I attempted to pay at the self serve Kios, with my Credit card. That was my first mistake. I inserted my Credit card, and it said approved so I removed it as directed . Me and Everybody at the Kios got a message saying "Chip error." I ask the lady working there about the "chip error" message, and she said It is a chip problem so just reinsert your card. I advised her that I got a message saying approved. She said "trust me" and I did the card insert again. The same thing happened again wit the chip error so she said insert your card again for a 3rd time. I was unsure if I was being billed 3 times for 15 dollars or one! I ask what is going on, and she told me that the reader has been not working for some time now. I ask her why has it NOT been repaired?? She abruptely said" Have a nice day sir!" and walked away. To which I replied "dont worry I can just cancel my credit card transaction if I am billed 3 times." The lady at the counted told me that my chicken was ready so I grabbed the bag and left without checking the chicken. I got home, confirmed I was only billed once, and I opened the bag to find Totally dried hard trash chicken. It was not the fresh chicken from the bin!! I am not a rocket scientist, but I realized that the lady at the counter saw my Arguing about their broken credit card system with the lady at the Kios, and she gave me the Trash chicken, instead of the fresh chicken. I do try to treat people the way I want to be treated, and I did not deserve to get trash chicken, because my credit card "which is brand new" did not work on their broken system that they WILL NOT FIX! I just wonder how many other people got trash chicken from the bin because they felt justified to PAY someone back for a precieved wrong. I stop by a Royal Farms occasionally, not just this location. I generally purchase chicken and western fries. Quality of chicken can vary depending on which location I have visited. Never had a problem or issue at this location until today. Like one chicken and fries; don't care to get the meal with roll. Always order one piece and then separately small or large fries separately on the same ticket. They are always boxed separately. Today ordered not the meal but one piece of chicken and small fries. Usually have part of my fries with meal and save rest for later. After paying for my purchases I went to the counter to pick up my food. No one else waiting around, no lines. One small box with my order number on it. I stopped an employee and said I don't see chicken - only one small box with fries. He replied "look in the box - it's all in the same box to save boxes." What I got was a breast and six small fries (six small pieces for $2.69) - the breast took up most of the box. Going forward, I will order one item and print the receipt and order the next item completely separately on another receipt. No complaint about the taste of the food, but the packaging and paying $2.69 for six small fries. Suppose I had ordered the two items for two different people?
