YELP 100 CHALLENGE 2018 - PART 2: 61/100 Just to get out of the norm of "Texas" food, Big Bro and SIL suggested having Caribbean food. I've bookmarked another place, but since they're the considered locals around here, we went with their recommendation. Plenty of parking since it shares the lot with a few other businesses. It's a no-frills place, an absolutely mom-and-pop digs. And it isn't just a restaurant - they have a couple of small aisles showcasing a few Caribbean products to try and take home. Everything is made to order. Big Bro and I got the same thing: oxtail and goat. Pops originally wanted the escoveitch snapper. Sadly, they didn't have it available. So, he went for their chicken curry special. SIL got the fried snapper. Mom opted for nothing since she knew we would have plenty of food to share. There were a ton of people who came through as we waited. A few put in orders for dine-in, but most were there to pick up. This is a true testament of how popular this place is. But that occurrence may have played a big part as to why our food took more than 30 minutes for completion. The oxtail was cooked to almost perfection. Tender and off the phone, the flavor was infused with well-balanced spices. It truly was delicious. The goat was with only a slight hint of game which added to its essence. I am a complete fan of this combo. I got a chance to try the fried snapper. It was bomb.com! That made the wait almost worth it. The four orders were plenty of food for a party of 5. But there are a couple downers: 1. They need to keep the sodas and drinks stocked up. It is hot season during the month of June and having only one can of cold coke in the fridge is no bueno ESPECIALLY with that kind of crowd coming in and out. 2. Chicken curry special?! Flavor profile is unique and amazing. But it stopped being special once we discovered the chicken wasn't cooked through. It was a bit too bloody on the inside for our taste. I felt they might have rushed it a little given the multiple orders coming through. Overall okay experience, but not enough for me to come bomb-rushing back. There are a couple of other places I'd like to compare it to before considering a comeback. Until then, 3 stars.

We were looking for a place to eat...looked up on Yelp and was surprised to see so many Caribbean places to eat! So we decided on this place & enjoyed it. Husband and I had curry goat...yum! We took a brown stew chicken home for kids and picked up a few Caribbean grocery items to boot. I noticed they serve breakfast (salt fish!) and wished Killeen was a little closer to home. Service was good ...everyone was pleasant and smiling. Thanks for the treat that your food was! If we are back this way, we will definitely stop in!!

The aroma alone gets 4 stars. Order taker is friendly. I really like the cabbage for $2. The flavor is worth more but for the portion size the price is fitting. The curry chicken lunch special w/can soda is $6.50. The $2 Beef patty is filled reasonably; it has a lil spice. I want to try the $2.30 veggie patty next time.

Update Terrible customer service experience today. I've been a loyal customer driving from Georgetown!! Won't be returning for a while if at all. Wasted my time and gas today. They couldn't care less it seemed. Very disappointed but I'll just take my business elsewhere. I spend at least $40 on food alone in each visit. Oh well .

Ox tails and jerk chicken combination plate. Tru Juice and pineapple ginger drink!!!!! Man to die for, everything was just right.

Oh man I haven't had great Caribbean food like this in a minute. This food melted in mouth. So delicious worth every penny. Will be back!!!

Just saw the name on the billboard while i was waiting for my hand braces and thought i would walk down at the end of the strip and try it. There were few people waiting for their order to go and it didn't take long for the staff to take my order. The staff was friendly and the restaurant also sells a few Jamaican products that you can buy. They have salted cod fish if you decide to cook your own ackee. I ordered the oxtail plate with jerk chicken. It comes with red beans and rice, cabbage and plantain. I also ordered one beef patty to go. Although it's pricey, well oxtail is expensive too.... It's worth the price and they do give you big portion. I couldn't eat all my food. The jerk chicken was very flavorful, oxtail was good, i had better... And the red beans and rice was mushy or maybe i should say it needs to be cooked longer.... The plantain was sweet and adds flavor to your food.... I might comeback one of these days and try the ackee. It's a far drive for me and only come this way if i have too... I do recommend this place!

This was my first time eating here and I can say it was decent. The to-go plate presentation was a bit sloppy and I felt the oxtail gravy was sweeter than I'm used too. The cabbage was good and the plantains just ok. I didn't feel full afterwards due to the small portion of oxtails. I will probably give this place another try but I hope they work on giving the customers their money's worth!

5 piece fried chicken, plantains, cabbage, peas and rice

Best Jamaican food in Killeen. I just moved here from the east coast where Jamaican food is lit and authentic! The customer service here's is spectacular and the food is delicious. Unlike Ava's who has terrible customer service and food has fallen off. Thanks Royal Caribbean!

I could give this place 5 stars if the wait wasn't so long. The food was amazing. I don't know what's in the oxtails but they are addicting. Eating here everyday would be a dream come true.

First mistake was not ordering by phone. Second mistake was coming here knowing I had to be back for a meeting. Arrived during lunch time (12:18pm) and order a small curried chicken plate to go. Finally got it my order at 12:56pm. Took a quick glance when he opened it for me to check but was in a hurry at that point to get back for a meeting. The food is good (When I finally got to eat it) but I was a little perturbed that there was only ONE small piece of plantain (about 1.5" in size).

Authentic and served hot! Oxtails and curry chicken with beans, rice and cabbage were surprisingly tasty and tender. Coconut milk taste in the rice set it off! Friendly customer service and there's even some groceries in the store! Beef patty is good too! We ended up getting a second large plate because my daughter ate over half my food! I will definitely be back!

    Yummy!

I ordered the oxtails with cabbage, rice and peas, and a side of macaroni and cheese. Let me start with the oxtails, they were super tender and cooked well, but honestly, they didn't taste like traditional Jamaican oxtails. I was missing that signature depth of flavor as there was no noticeable allspice, thyme, or scotch bonnet heat. It reminded me more of a good, comforting brown gravy dish my mom would make, not bad at all, just not what I expected from a Jamaican kitchen. The rice and peas were a bit underwhelming. Not much flavor and the rice was a bit overcooked. The cabbage also had a strange taste I couldn't quite place, definitely not the usual Jamaican seasoned style I'm used to. Now let me give props where it's due: the macaroni and cheese was off the chain! Cheesy, creamy, and packed with flavor. Honestly, I'd come back just for that. My son had the jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. Same thoughts on the sides, but he said the jerk chicken was seasoned to perfection. He also got a beef patty (no pic of that), and I tried a bite, very flavorful, not spicy, and the crust was flaky and delicious. The atmosphere was quiet with plenty of seating, and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful in guiding us through the menu. They also had a great selection of desserts and Jamaican drinks, which I'll definitely check out next time. All in all, it wasn't a perfect experience flavor wise, but I can see why people like this place. Friendly service, good portions, and some definite hits like the mac and cheese and jerk chicken. I'd say it's worth trying.

There is even a Seinfeld episode on point about this with the Dominicans rolling the crepes. If you don't believe me compare a Romeo y Julieta (DR) to a real one, or any of the other cigar companies that have a DR factory with non-Cuban torcedores to one from the motherland. With the limited reviews of this joint on yelp I was having to read between the lines that the ladies preparing the food were probably not authentic Cubans. But based on the very favorable four to five star reviews of the Cuban sandwich from other yelpers, they seemed to know how to put in work on the gentlesir's favourite panini type class of sandwich so I was sold on giving it the olde "college try" since the prices seemed quite reasonable and I needed to submit receipts for travel reimbursement to my organization that were not handwritten. Just a note for yelpers - the "grocery store" part of the business is actually called Killeen Nutritional Center which has a separate yelp business page and this is the page for the to-go restaurant portion of the biz. I wandered around there for several minutes trying to find the sammich counter until I realized I was at the deli (in the grocery store) and the girl behind the deli counter was actively ignoring me. So I spotted the door behind the registers the other way and walked into the sammich place I wanted to be in. They could really use a sign or something, or workers that will acknowledge your existence and direct you appropriately. I actually know some spanglish so I know enough to be helpful asking where ya boy can obtain his emparedado. There is "prepared food" cafeteria style that most people dining in seemed to be getting so there is a line for that. However if you are gentlesir in for a sammich then you go straight to the register to order it there, pay for it, then you go wait for it to come out. There are also people buying the pastries out of the case at the register which are neither sammiches nor prepared cafeteria style take out, so there is some light confusion and at one time there appeared to be three separate lines of people trying to get it in at the one girl working the one register at the counter. The Cuban comes with Swiss cheese, pork, ham, mustard, pickle, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. Or if you are bi-curious: el cubano (es una balleza tambien) tiene queso suizo, pernil, jamon, mostaza, pepinillo, lechuga, tomate, cebolla, y mayonesa. Homey costs $3.35. You read that right. This is not the best Cuban I have ever had if we are being honest. It was not prepared by authentic Cubans, but they never represented that they were authentic Cubans so we have to temper expectations accordingly and especially at this price point. I have to review the sammich in accord with Antone's last non-chain outpost in the Med Centre who also was not Cuban, but they mastered the non-Cuban art of making Cuban food. I am pretty sure my order ticket they put in to the kitchen said something along the lines of me being a gringo, possibly a puta also but I will never know even though I always assume this is being said behind my back and the main reason why I learned spanglish. This thing came with a Shania Twain sized heaping of mayo. So much mayo. Goddammit I don't even like mayo, that racist stereotype has to end. Meanwhile I love mustard and that was nearly nonexistent. I also love pickles and there was little pickle to speak of. If I knew they were going to go HAM on the mayo I would have just told them to hold it entirely and slide some pickle magic into the sammich in its place - but I would have to be careful that nothing got lost in translation since sliding a pickle into something is a double entendre which we snuck past the censors, just like that lemon party joke. So that is my most useful tip I can give you for your visit, tell them to hold the mayo unless you want six pounds of it on your sammich just ruining everything and your good time. THAT IS NOT HOW A CUBANO IS SUPPOSED TO GO. The meats were extremely dry and I suppose the giant dosing of mayo was an effort to mask that desert dryness, which was exquisitely unsuccessful on me but may have worked its charm better on other diners. I put the sammich on par with Subway quality at best (especially the underwhelming tomato and lettuce quality) but not customizable at your own instruction as Subway is, so you don't need to take any responsibility for the creation of this monstrosity. This was my worst meal on my road trip through this area. However, I am still rewarding them with a three star yelp review (an #upgrayedd of stars taking into account the totality of the circumstances beyond the disappointing sammich) since unlike KMB they printed me a proper receipt I could actually use for reimbursement from my organization.
