I was looking for a place to eat while staying in Killeen, and was surprised to see a Jamaican restaurant in this area. I was expecting it to be a non-authentic place given its location, but was surprised to see that it very much reminded me of restaurants I saw in Jamaica. People inside were very friendly and very much for Jamaican, so I was expecting a very authentic experience. I ordered the patti, curried goat, and jerk chicken. They gave me no sauce with the jerk chicken, which also made it so that I did not have a spicy sauce to go with it. The jerk chicken was not too impressive and was tough and extra chewy. The curried goat was not very impressive and lacked flavour. The patti was good, but not the best. Overall, I would say this place is not where you want to get good Jamaican food. Going to an HBCU in the nations capital allowed me to experience the finer cuisine of this beautiful island. My absolute favorite is jerk chicken with peas and rice with plantain. The establishment did not disappoint my high expectations. The ladies that I met were beautiful and full of life and friendly conversation. I WILL be back for more. And don't forget the Mango Punch. I ordered delivery through Grub Hub. They immediately called me, as most of what I ordered was out. They were incredibly humble and apologetic and explained it had been a busy day. I simply told them to "do the best they could". I got the jerk chicken and curried chicken, a bunch of plantains. They also included some canned juices and a bunch of rolls as an apology! The food was excellent, I highly highly recommend the curried chicken!! Not something I'd typically order but oh man was it delicious!! Also, it's just nice to see business work hard to provide a nice meal and problem solve. I had some friends really talk up Jamaican beef patties and how I should try some. So I jumped on Yelp to find the nearest Jamaican inspired restaurant. The spicy beef patty did not disappoint. The outside was just crispy enough and the spicy beef filling had an amazing taste, not sure exactly what the spice were, but they were came together nicely. Ok been here several times the food is good but it depend on who the server is. There is one server that works before 12 noon she gives tiny portion size not worth the money. I see a lot of customer complain about the portion size when she serves. The other server who come after 12 gives appropriate sizes for your money. I moved to Killeen in late January 2015 and since that time I've experienced four different Jamaican restaurants. Island Spice is by far the best of them all! The cabbage is always fresh and you can taste the coconut milk in the rice and beans. But of course the most important part is the meat...I've had both curry and jerk chicken to authenticate the restaurant and it is indeed irie! I ordered the Jerk Chicken plate. Not sure how they managed to find the smallest legs and thighs with the least amount of meat on the bone. The chicken was grilled and a little too burnt for my liking. The rice and peas were VERY dry. The little container of jerk sauce they give you was more like some kind of jerk barbeque concoction which was too sweet for my liking. I have most definitely had better. If i could choose no stars then i would have. Went in and they didnt have cabbage. I still proceeded to order my food anyway. I was charged full price even though they were not able to fulfill my complete meal. On top of that my food had cold spots in it and had been attempted to be warmed up in the microwave.
