OMG!!! I Uber eat this place! Worse money I've ever spent in 2024. This place takes no pride in their food.. no seasoning, I'm sure the oxtails were extremely old.. the meat was shriveled up on them.. I may have gotten one tablespoon of meat.. no sauce but gives you a bucket amount of dry rice.. the cabbage is so dry I think they may have forgotten to start the pot. I don't know but I wish I would have read reviews I would rather eat Mc Donald's and I don't even eat there. And lastly the plantain was not sweet and soft.. it appeared soft till I bit it and it crumbled.. and I know the difference between the soft sweet ones and the crunchy ones.. I believe this one fell on the floor a week ago and they ran out of plantains and the cook said I think there's an old one on the floor I can put in her plate!! What a waste of money. I've always wanted to try Jamaican food and I'm so glad Ava's was my first taste. It was so delicious and the portions were huge. Meats were cooked to just the right tenderness and the rice was onolicious. I'm not from around this area but so glad we found this gem. I was craving Caribbean food and Ava's was the closest to me. The bad reviews worried me, but I decided to take a chance since there aren't any recent reviews! Things could have changed and they most definitely did. Covid-19 is happening right now so I called in my order to pick up. It's a little hole in the wall like most Caribbean restaurants I've been too. The owner was cordial. She was trying to be as safe as she could. She set up the credit card reader to face the customer and when she handed me back my receipt I asked her where was the receipt for me to sign and leave a tip? She said she wasn't letting people touch the screen to be cautious and she felt bad asking if people wanted to leave a tip. I did not have cash on me. Please bring cash to tip! I ordered a Oxtail and Curry Goat plate. The food was just what I wanted! The plate was large! when I seen how much food there was I thought I would eat half for lunch and the other half for dinner, but it was too good to stop eating. We had the fried snapper. It was good, but for island people we would have liked more seasoning of the fish. Nevertheless, the fish and the yellow rice was good. It's intimidating if it's your first time here or trying Caribbean food. There was no menu, pictures, or prices. There was a standing board of today's menu of four items. I decided to order the jerk chicken, but she said it won't be ready until two hours! Basically, only two of the four items on the board were available. I guess it's better to go later in the day when the items are actually ready. I told her this was my first time there, yet I had to ask basic questions. Does anything come with the meat? How much is it? I have no idea what a brown chicken is so asked what's in it and she just said blend of spices. haha... So I would suggest checking out the pictures online before going! My meat came with rice, shredded cabbage, and two soft plantain pieces. I picked the small plate for $11 something so the prices on Yelp needs to be updated. The meal was filling. read more

Placed an order 4.23.23. Restaurant was closed. Called restaurant on April 24 was given the run around. Was told call Mgr after 6pm. Called after 6pm was told mgr was here all day now gone. After disputing charge with bank was told could take 45/60 day for refund. When speaking with Supervisor Josh's at Grubhub who got paid for the transaction but unable to process a refund I will now call police a do a theft of service complaint. They are COVID conscious so after the order they request you wait in the car and they will bring your order out. Saturday June 25th at about 1:00pm a friend and I walked into Ava's. There was a women behind the desk taking a order over the phone. A man was off to the right reading the menu. We waited for about ten minutes. Within this ten minutes we were not acknowledged, with a hand wave, a "good afternoon" nothing. We still stand and wait because I was craving jerk chicken. It was then we all heard the woman behind the counter on the phone say "Well I got folks looking upside my head right now". We all turned around and walked out, included the man that had already been there waiting and reading the menu. This was my first time ordering via DoorDash. DoorDash was not the issue. I have an issue with the soggy plantains they tried to give me. I asked for rice and peas they gave me just the rice which was undercooked. The jerk chicken was the only thing good and that's in a mediocre way. The cabbage had a funny aftertaste. Just okay. Employees aren't real friendly and I felt like I was annoying them just by ordering food. When I got there no one was as at the counter and I stood around for a few minutes wondering if they were open. I was instructed later on to "ring the counter bell." I guess the door chime isn't loud enough for them to hear from the back. The jerk chicken has a sweet flavor but isn't very spicy. Yum! This place is within walking distance of my house and I'm so glad! We tried their jerk chicken and curry chicken with yellow rice and were so pleased. I should have read the reviews before going. There's a reason they have the worst ranking for Caribbean food in Killeen. Unwelcoming is absolutely true. Decor is a mismatch of bright island colors in the front and a cave of a kitchen with warm fall colors in the back with a wall installed so you can't see what's going on back there- completely opposite of the trend of open air kitchens. There was a computer sign taped to the wall offering Roti every day, however when ordered she stated that started on Monday- not sure why they taped the sign up on Saturday then. Anyways, ordered the cabbage and rice and beans. Both had zero flavor. However, cabbage was better than rice and peas, which had a weird cinnamon taste. Ate the $3 cabbage. Honestly I was wanting some Jamaican Food. Jerk chicken is my Favorite. But I walk into Ava's expecting that welcoming Smiling hospitality I've experienced at so many other Jamaican restaurants. This was not what transpired here at all. The lady at the counter seem to be uncomfortable with the fact that I was there to eat. Customer service forget about it. I ask a question about portion size cause of the plate sizes and she responded with attitude. Disregard it that and ordered anyway. Got a call saying they were out of oxtail so asked for curry shrimp instead, since nothing else would equal what I had already paid for. Guy gave me an attitude and refused to try and make the switch and gave me a attitude. I decided to settle for curry chicken instead just so I could get my food. I was a loyal fan of Ava's and I ate there at least once or twice a week. However, I went there this evening and ordered a jerk chicken plate. Tonight the chicken didn't have any jerk seasoning, it tasted "grilled" there was no spice to the chicken at all. I called to ask if they have indeed forgot to put seasoning on my chicken, she exclaimed that it was but I know better because I've ate there on numerous occasions. Instead of offering me another meal that was correctly prepared she only apologized. I've noticed in the last couple of weeks the jerk sauce was thick and watery but, the chicken was so good it really didn't bother me until today. I got the steamed veggies as a side. I am sure they were good before being doused in oil. Plantains were ok. Other things tried at my table were jerk chicken, chicken salad, and goat curry. Coworker had a slice of the cake, which he said was ok. They have a cooler with drinks, American and Jamaican varieties. Bob Marley playing on the radio. I thought at one time this location was one of the best in the area but competition has been fierce. I've tried every dish since living in Killeen. The sizes of meals (portions) are mediocre and does not fit the local area serving Caribbean style foods or dishes. Their large is like a medium in most places. I had to give them 3 stars only cause I continue to come stop by and show support but it may become a full moon affair stopping here. It's just not the same. So, 3 stars due to my past feelings of the place and in hope that they return to glory days of serving the best food around. Their friendliness has dropped off too. I had there oxtail on a Sunday which tends to be slow for restaurants. Which also means the cooks are board and lazy due to the lack of business and attention to detail is lost. Well this was not the case for my experience here. I took my food to go and when I got home it was still hot and everything was seasoned properly and the oxtail was cooked perfect.
