We were looking for a good 'ol, non-franchise breakfast/brunch dive and thought Royal Cafe would fit the bill. Loved the photos and of the place on Yelp, the fact it is a single, standalone (non-franchised) and localized in appearance setting. It met the 'dive' expectations alright, but it ended there. The place was beyond homey; in desperate need of good cleaning, a spruce-up . . . at least a fresh coat of paint. Giving the additional star due to the great service from our server, but the rest of the experience leaves a lot to be desired. Had the Reuban Sandwich with fries and Greek Salad. The sandwich was 'okay', but the fries are the type that come right out of a large plastic bag from Costco / Sam's Club. The Greek Salad was average to below average making it a 'meh' experience. The food is amazing, the service outstanding, ambiance warm and inviting. Large portions served with friendliness and laughter. This restaurant is tucked away in an old strip mall on Grand Avenue. It's across from a beautiful Mormon church. Located in Sun City, it's a gem not to be overlooked. The prices are affordable and it's worth stopping in for the home cooked meals and service. I was expecting a dive-bar breakfast joint, but this is more of an old diner in a pretty much abandoned strip mall. The place was pretty dated and felt old, however the cool old plates were very homey. I got the chicken fried steak and eggs. It wasn't home made but it was good. I'm glad I got the gravy on the side because it was pasty and not very flavorful. I ordered home fries but got hashbrowns. The coffee and service was just fair. read more

Food was below average. I came in with my two granddaughters. And they wanted to leave because it was so dirty and gross. I did talk them into staying and trying. I had a hamburger. My granddaughter ordered crêpes. The crêpes were terrible. She didn't even eat them. The other granddaughter had a kids meal and that was just fine french fries, and a grilled cheese. The service is good and they refunded the crêpes that we didn't eat. But this place really needs a deep down thorough cleaning. The bathroom was disgusting. read more

Went here for my 51st bday with my friends for breakfast. There was about 20 of us including a couple kids. The food was great. I had a classic chicken fried steak, breakfast potatoes , eggs over easy, toast and a side of bacon!! Tried my friends biscuits & gravy and another friends corn beef hash. Everything was great! As soon as we walked in we were immediately greeted by the host whom had a huge smile and immediately led us to our table. Then with the blink of an eye our kind waitress came out and got us started. While we were waiting for our food, we looked at the surrounding area. Sure, the place looks a bit run down but I believe that's just its own special charm! When the food came out we were both pleasantly surprised, we wanted to find a cheap little restaurant and this place did NOT disappoint. The portions were perfect for the prices. I got the Philly Cheesesteak and my boyfriend got the deal of the day, 3 tacos and beans and rice. The food was absolutely delicious, all the flavors were there and on my cheesesteak they did not skimp with the cheese. The portions of food were amazing as you can see from my photos, I had chicken strips, fries & mash potatoes & a salad because they offer 3 sides instead of 2! My hubby got a Mexican omelet & enjoyed it very much as well. We will definitely be back while we're here in Arizona for this event. We walked in and was immediately greeted by the host/cashier. We stopped in for breakfast. The restaurant is mid-century modern, nothing fancy. It is a spacious restaurant, lots of seating. The menu is standard diner breakfast food- eggs, breakfast meat, omelettes, skillets, french toast, crepes, and pancakes. The gyro meat and feta cheese omlette was different, I've haven't seen that offered anywhere else. We shared the chicken fried steak with scrambled eggs and home fries. The chicken fried steak was what'd you expect- tasty goodness with gravy. The home fries were SOOO GOOD! They were thinly sliced potatoes, fried up. The potatoes alone are worth the trip! The Royal Cafe also serves lunch, dinner, and desserts. Prices are very reasonable. Our server was friendly and very attentive throughout our meal- refilling our coffee mugs and checking on us. I visited this restaurant on 10/7/22 and ordered a Philly Cheese Steak with potato salad. The cutlery was cheap stainless, but had bits of food on the knife and fork and was greasy. Apparently they wash their cutlery in cold water and let it air dry. I complained and was given an identical set of cutlery with the same grease and food bits on them. If I had been by myself, I would have left but my friend (who was paying) was looking forward to the pancakes he ordered, so we stayed. My cheese steak was long strips of some type of flavorless beef and a day old hoagie roll that was too much bread and tasteless as well. The potato salad was so so, but my appetite was already ruined by the cutlery and the beef. I brought the sandwich home to give the meat to my dog. I am normally not a very picky person, but I could not eat this unappetizing meal. My friend was happy with his pancakes. Needless to say, I will never return to this place. read more

I take some responsibility for our Royal Cafe Thanksgiving meal. I did not want to cook or entertain, nor did I feel like going out so I really limited our options. Since we are just 2, a lot of the meal packages offered at other restaurants and stores were just too much food So when I saw the Royal Cafe's deal for Thanksgiving meals by the plate I thought that that was the perfect solution...... not so much. By the time we arrived to pick up our meal at 2 (1 hour before closing) they were out of the prime rib option so we had to get the turkey meal. It was ice cold when we got it home and I can't say heating did much to improve it. The turkey tasted like it was from a processed turkey roll. The gravy was peach coloured and scared me so much that I completely passed on the mashed potatoes and gravy. The stuffing was unmistakably out of a box. The green bean casserole was tasty but so mushy. The sweet potatoes/yams were the high point of the plate. I have to also say that the pumpkin pie was very nice as well. I think we were expecting something a little more homemade tasting and other than the gravy it was at least edible. They received a star more than I would probably give them because they were open on Thanksgiving and served the community. read more

Guess the standard is really low in Sun City. Service is pretty good, but the food really sucks! The food quality at Mercer's which is just 3 miles away on W Peoria Ave. is much better. Some of their dishes & specials are really good, while other's are barely edible. We are regulars & now & then get a surprise of the "unedible" as we did last with their recent chicken & dumplings. The chef changed the recipe & the chicken was harden dried tasteless cubes & the dumplings were lumps of clay-like uncooked dough. it was all very dry & little to no gravy sauce. Previously, that special has been more like homemade w/a moist country-gravy sauce, with shredded chicken & a big moist homemade biscuit as the dumpling. At Royal Cafe luckily it was just $5 for an entire breakfast which is a great value for todays prices. Food was hot when it was brought out but the sausage was pretty bland (generic tasting, almost a frozen consistency). A very dated place with the usual Sun City crowd, but my car club had a breakfast meeting there. We had the side room, which was good sized but very, very dark as it only had a few ceiling lights. We chose to have a limited menu, only three items, to avoid individual checks and confusion. There were about 50 of us. We had only one server and she did a pretty good job, although with that number of guests, some had finished by the time others were served. The food itself was good and the portions were plentiful. It is a good place to hold an event such as this if you want the bare minimum, decent food and a space to use. The restaurant gave the Club a good deal and it was appreciated. read more

Place is ran down with duct tape holding it up. I could look past all that if the food was good, but it was just okay. The one star is for the server who insisted to my wife she wanted over medium eggs instead of over easy and the cheaper version of the meal she first asked that she could piece together from another section of the menu. Then she did the same thing to my father. "No, you want your eggs over medium instead of over easy. When she finally got to me, I ordered the cheese omelette, she said "No, what you want is the scramble eggs with cheese, it's cheaper." I said I don't give a crap about the price I want an omelette. My toast was "still cooking" long after my food arrived. It was bizarre to be told you "no" when you place your order and trust me they need the few extra bucks she's trying to save everyone. read more

I feel like I need to try this place again after restaurants get their groove back. Maybe it was a rough day. They did have a special people seemed very excited about- 2.25 for bacon or sausage and a couple silver dollar pancakes. I'm not a pancake person so I got my standard breakfast order- omelet and hashbrowns with onion. Service was off- I had to stop her from running away before I could complete my order. My tea came without sweetener or a straw. I had to flag the waitress down repeatedly to get catsup and salt and pepper. And my first set of silverware had food on it. The food itself wasn't super pretty but actually tasted better than it looked. In my book that beats the opposite. I think the owner was the cashier. He was friendly. That's always a plus. For fifteen bucks including a 20% tip it could've been better. I'd be willing to try again. read more
