My son wanted to try something new for his birthday so we went looking on Yelp and found Roux Dat. I have tried many a Cajun themed restaurant in multiple locations across the USA with extremely mixed results. Some have been outstanding and many have been poor interpretations of Cajun cuisine based on poor public perception of what LA cooking is really like. Well Roux Dat came through on the good side of the ledger with flying colors. It's a small place with a small kitchen and small staff, which could present problems if they tried to do a full blown LA menu like so many places try to do. They have chosen to focus on two main things, poboys and stews. For a small kitchen this is very smart as the stews can be made ahead and the main fresh cooking activity is limited to the poboys. We had a variety of the stew items, Crawfish Maque Choux, Jambalaya, and the Gumbo. All had outstanding flavor. My favorite was the Crawfish Maque Choux. We also had the oyster poboy. The oysters were nicely cooked with a crispy exterior and luscious interior. So many times I have had overcooked fried oysters that this was a pleasant surprise. It's a basic order at the counter and they bring it out to you kind of place. Not a fancy place. Focus is on the food and it's very noticeable. We will be back. read more

um wtf absolutely delicious. im upset. i got the 1/2 and 1/2 deal, and it was my second time here. the flavors were delicious. out of the two stews i got, i would say i liked the Spinach, mushroom, and artichoke one more. i wish the other one (the chicken, okra, sausage one) had more sausage that packed more of a punch (i love heat and warmth and thats what i was looking more for in that one. still was flavorful but in comparison to the mushroom one, it was lacking in my opinion). This place is a little off the beaten path, so it is easy to forget they're here, but they are delicious and definitely worth it! All entrees and sides are affordable and scrumptious. I haven't found a single thing here I didn't like. I've tried almost all the stews and a good chunk of their Po' Boy sandwich section of the menu and feel satisfied no matter what I get (a rarity at any restaurant!). Today I had a muffaletta sandwich with jambalaya as the side, and OMG, I was so happy I did! I was dancing in my seat while I ate it, so much yummy tapenade and meats on perfectly fresh bread, and of course you can never go wrong with their jambalaya, perfectly spiced and all. I noticed today that they have iced tea as a beverage option, with fresh mint and lemon by the dispenser - how cool is that?! I know, I know, it's silly but the little things really impress me. I call in once for lunch pick up usually, but the ambience is also pretty cool with a Mardi-Gras-style of décor if you decide to stay. It is a small restaurant, but also has some outside seating. The service is also on par, always friendly and prompt, what else can you ask for? We ordered takeout after a long day at the beach. We ordered two large entrees. One was a spicy jambalaya and the other one was a etoffe(?)Both were amazing and hit the spot. Super flavorful! After visiting New Orleans a few years ago, I missed the food so much and this brought me right back. The fried green tomatoes were ah-mazing and the beignets were delicious. My husband and I usually hit Roux Dat's downtown location since we live in Scotts Valley, however, we were in Capitola today so we went to the Capitola location. Staff is always super friendly at both locations. While I was waiting for my food, the staff member walked my order over to me when it was ready vs. yelling my name to pick it up, which was really nice. When we got home we ordered cornbread on the side and one of the slices was a little smaller than an average size piece so they threw in another piece. :)). Had to try this place out after a beautiful relaxing afternoon on the beach with my daughter. This place had lots of positive reviews and the food selection sounded great. It's less than ten minutes drive from the beach in an outdoor retail shopping center. Interior was nice and colorful & we were immediately greeted warmly by the friendly hostess/cashier. Overall casual atmosphere. Allowed the option to order two types on one order to satisfy one's curiosity. Food was prepared quickly, presented well, and delicious. Super excited to hear that there was a cajun/creole place in santa cruz, so i had to head over right away. I had the jambalaya woth white rice and it was amazing! I didnt really taste the variety of meats that were in the stew, but it still tasted good regardless. I also had the beignets and to be honest, this is where I had to dock some stars. It just wasn't what I expected. The batch I got looked more like collapsed fried wontons with powdered sugar. Also, the beignets were sooooo small (probably the size of a small post-it note). Not sure if I got a bad batch, but it lookedd nothing like the photos. The rum sauce was good, though. Overall, my experience was great. First time customer so I got it plain just to try the chicken and spices on it to my disappointment it was not good the seasoning tasted sandy and more earthy with a burnt after taste the meat inside was subpar tender but not good either I got fries with it but a small portion and seasoning didn't make a difference to flavor. There is only one feeling I can describe as I sit here looking at the finished jambalaya I ate and that feeling is definitely not a good one. I would say disappointed and dissatisfied. Yes I know it's a stew but you could've made it a little more spicy other than providing hot sauces to make up for the lack of flavor, I would recommend adding more spicy flavors you really give Cajun a bad name. On the other hand my girlfriend had the fried chicken Cajun and the Cajun part really lacked as well, chicken was good and overall satisfying but I can't acknowledge this as being anything near real Cajun food. After I moved to the bay area, I found it strange how my love for Cajun and creole food grew instead of my love for Asian food. Maybe it has to do with the fact that two of my previous housemates were from Louisiana and cooked their family recipes ALL THE TIME. However, now that I don't live with them, I've been on a hunt for restaurants that serve similar food to satisfy my cravings. This restaurant is a small place and doesn't look like much but when you try the food you will be amazed! I ordered my classic fried shrimp po' boy with a side of shrimp & corn etouffe. My partner ordered the Jambalaya and gumbo. Oh my goodness this place knocked it out of the park! The shrimp and corn etouffe was full of spice, but balanced with a sweetness from the corn. The jambalaya was thick with large pieces of chicken, sausage, and peppers mixed through it. And the gumbo was a hodgepodge of deliciousness. Who cares what's in it? For the amount of food they give you, I'd say this is a pretty good deal. Choice 1 - Jambalaya and Crawfish Maque Choux - I have to say that both choices was very good and taste pretty close to what I had in New Orleans. This was served with white rice in the middle of the 2 dishes and a slice of bread. I did like the crawfish Maque Choux more than the jambalaya. Choice 2 - Red Beans and Sausage and Etouffee. The etouffee was pretty good but the red bean and sausage was pretty bland. Again, this was served with rice in the middle and a slice of bread. I have had cajun food in New Orleans, and this place is even better than the restaurants I stood in line for 45 minutes for popular cajun food in New Orleans. I love that they have vegan and vegetarian options. I had a vegan jambalaya and it was delicious. It had huge pieces of fresh vegetables in it. It wasn't quite spicy enough for my taste, but I like spicy food. I am from the South and I don't really cook so I miss some foods from home such as hushpuppies. Therefore, I was delighted to see them on the menu. They are delicious! The dipping sauce for them was great, too. If you like beer you're in luck here because they have 4 different draft beers from a very popular Louisiana brewer (Abita). They also have homemade pecan pralines on the counter. If you have never had a pecan praline and you like sweet treats, YOU MUST try one of their pralines! Without exagerration they were the best pralines I have ever had. My only complaint is that they did not have sweet tea. And Sweet Tea is different than unsweet tea that has sugar added. How? Sugar does not mix well with room temperature or cold tea. So, if you make sweet tea by adding sugar to unsweet tea then it will be grainy and gross. Regardless, this place is one of my favorite restaurants I have eaten in since moving to California four years ago. I plan to be back as often as possible. read more

All were full of delicious spicy creole flavor that reminded me of Grandma. My only complaint is that the portions for the entrees are small. However because we order to share family style the wonderful owners were nice enough to provide ample rice and bread so we were all satisfied. The owners are pleasant and courteous. Had I gone solely for the beignets I would have been disappointed. I've only had them one other time (and never in New Orleans) but these were quite small, rather heavy, more oily than I expected, without a hint of sweetness in the dough, and to me - not too tasty. Luckily those were not all we ordered. On the upside I did enjoy my étouffée and gumbo combo very much. It was tasty, potion size perfect, and I liked the bread that accompanied. I would have liked more spice in my food, but they probably trying to to please a variety of tastes. There are several hot sauces available at the table, but they look to be mainly vinegar based & I like heat & spice, but vinegar not so much. The hush puppies were also good. I'll definitely go again to try more kinds of gumbo & étouffée. I'd even try the beignets once more to see if I just caught them on a bad day. The staff is friendly and attentive. I got the half and half chicken shrimp and sausage jambalaya/ cheese crawfish étouffée. It was served with brown rice in the middle and a piece of toasty, Cajun seasoned bread. The jambalaya was seasoned perfectly and had huge pieces of shrimp and fresh veggies. I wish it had been spicier, but the flavor was just right. The étouffée was good as well, not as flavorful, but had a underlying rich cheesiness. It was not overpowering as the crawfish definitely had a major role. I would order both dishes again! Came here for the second time and it was packed! The space is pretty small (only about 7 tables inside, 3 outside), so we ordered something to go. A bowl of one item is $9, a bowl of two is $9.50. We got a bowl of the crawfish maque choux and vegetarian jambalaya with brown rice. I'm no expert when it comes to Cajun food, but the maque choux was pretty darn good. It had a ton of corn and black beans along with big pieces of sausage and crawfish. The veggie jambalaya was also super flavorful and well spiced. My one complaint is that the pieces of celery were all different sizes - made the dish look kind of inconsistent. I'd go back again to try the beignets! read more
