Ki Mobility - New Ki Catalyst 5

Ki Mobility

(2 reviews)

The weird thing about dealing with manufacturers for durable medical equipment is that you seldom,…read moreif ever, actually deal with the manufacturer. You deal with a vendor. You deal with a "middle man" who helps you obtain the needed equipment and you hope they're right with what you actually receive. You don't typically get a second chance. With most products in America, you can change your mind. With most durable medical equipment, you're stuck with it. There's no room for error. I'd never dealt with Ki Mobility before. I'm a longtime fan of the Sunrise Mobility/Quickie model of wheelchair, while I equally abhor Tilite and Invacare products are simply not made for someone as active as I am in a wheelchair. There are other models/brands, but for the most part when you're an active wheelchair user you learn the good brands and you stick with them. I had one very brief experience with Ki - an entry-level chair I picked up at a Goodwill outlet for a ridiculously low price. It was decent enough, I suppose, but it gave me the impression that Ki was more of a manufacturer of drugstore wheelchairs for low-demand users. That's definitely not me. I'm the guy who has traveled over 6,000 miles in my wheelchair on fundraising/activism events. I'm the guy who went out on a nature trail and accidentally detoured into the rim of a deep quarry. That was an ugly day. I'm also the guy who in November 2019 experienced a third amputation, the result of being 50+ and living with spina bifida and paraplegia along with my two below-knee amputations. This third amputation took my left leg above the knee and had a devastating impact on my independence skills and, more importantly, the driving that allowed me to work and support myself. I needed a miracle. Truthfully, most people in my life were encouraging me to quit working and accept that my body had finally said it was time to stay home. My gut was telling me I still had more independence in me. I just needed equipment that could match my needs. After getting little support medically, I finally started making the phone calls myself. I talked to a couple vendors. I settled with Numotion, a company I'd previously had negative experiences with and to be honest that was maintained through this experience. However, the technician for Numotion was quite good and made a recommendation for a Ki Catalyst 5 wheelchair as the option most likely to allow me to independently get in my car either by collapsing the wheelchair or by the wheelchair folding small enough that I can put it in my car despite the limb loss. Once the order was placed, however, Ki Mobility truly shined. The wheelchair was delivered within the promised time frame. The Catalyst 5 was intentionally set up to make it smaller. At first, it was a little jarring and it lacked the sturdiness I usually go for with wheelchairs due to my active lifestyle. However, many of the initial problems I had with my last wheelchair have been non-existent here. The wheelchair is, quite simply, a workhorse of a chair. It folds up nicely and I haven't had to disassemble it. I've learned how to situate my body in a way that I can hoist it into my backseat. The wheelchair unfolds fairly easily, wheels come off, and after around 3 months of use I'm impressed with the durability of its paint job and exterior. I've got a smooth ride. We didn't do the slanted wheels (better for active lifestyle) to save room, but I still feel quite stable in the chair. On their website, they note that they're not "flashy" in referring to their new logo (which, I must confess, reminds me of Wal-Mart's). That's really the truth, though. This chair is attractive but not flashy, durable and dependable but not necessarily with all the bells and whistles. The wheels are sturdy, the brakes don't have the wiggle that wheelchair brakes often have, and the wheelchair has done exactly what I needed it to do dependably for the past 3 months. I was told by the technician that Ki was founded by two people with 50 years of experience in complex rehab; I believe at least one came out of Sunrise Medical/Quickie. They seem to have taken everything I love about the Quickie Chair (the only brand that has truly stood up to my demanding lifestyle) and they've made improvements at a comparable pricing point. I'm truly impressed. Plus, it gave me my miracle. After 3 amputations, I'm still working and still independent and still active. Bravo, Ki Mobility.

I will never order a Ki Mobility chair again for my family member…read more They said it would not be much heavier than a titanium chair. NOT. I am on my third pair of scissor locks. The first pair lasted 5 years. That's. fine. I have gone through another two in 11 months and the springs have failed again. Called Ki and they do not support the product past the warranty. OK. So it's $70 every time they fail plus another $10 for shipping. It's frustrating that the small spring that fails probably costs less than a $1 and I could fix it on my own BUT they don't sell it. Of course, there are other things that I have had to replace on this chair out-of-pocket. Bottom line: Product reliability is low. Support is even lower. Buy something else from someone else.

As a DNR registered recycling collector, Good News Project’s E-Cycling Program provides a resource in Central Wisconsin to help keep electronic waste out of landfills by collecting and safely recycling outdated electronics. Valuable resources are reclaimed, toxins are kept out of our air and water, and nothing ends up in the landfill. In 2020 and 2024, our E-Cycling collection program was awarded an Electronics Collection Excellence Award by the Wisconsin DNR. Our Health Equipment Lending Program (HELP) loans durable medical equipment like walkers, wheelchairs, and hospital beds to those in our community. Donated equipment is safety checked, repaired if needed, and sent through an industrial sanitizing machine and absorbed into the inventory of equipment, ready for lending to clients. HELP was mentioned in the Harvard Health Letter in March 2020 as being an accessible and user-friendly resource for people with durable medical equipment needs. Good News Project facilitates international trips for volunteers with a heart for service. These trips to the West Indies focus on providing housing, education for sustainable living, and companionship for the poor. Due to travel restraints, service trips have been put on hold until 2024, though our efforts continue via donations of health equipment and other relief supplies.

Apria has been the most difficult company I have had the displeasure of working with. I received a…read moreprescription from my doctor for a travel C-Pap. After the prescription was rejected by my normal provider of healthcare equipment, I was redirected to Apria by my insurance provider UMR. My Doctor sent the prescription to the local Apria in Marshfield, WI. I received a call from Wendy at the local branch of Apria and was informed that I would have to pay out of pocket for the equipment as it was considered a "luxury item". I informed her that having sleep apnea was no luxury, and I was offended by this statement, and that my insurance company, UMR, had verified that this was covered under my plan. She proceeded to tell me she had been working in the industry for over 30 years and knew what she was talking about, but said she would check with her manager. I then received a call from Brad, who proceeded to tell me that this item was not covered by insurance and that I would have to pay out of pocket. I called UMR that same day and spoke to the head of Customer Service, and she was kind enough to call Brad at the Marshfield Branch of Apria to confirm this machine was covered. Brad submitted for pre-approval, and unfortunately, the pre-approval was denied because the coding provided by my doctor's office was incorrect. UMR was kind enough to call my doctor's office a few days later and get corrected coding submitted in a new prescription to Apria. I called Apria to verify they got it. A few days later, they called to let me know it was in process. Yeah! Finally getting my much-needed equipment. Today I got a call from the very nice Customer Service person at UMR to check on things, as they had not seen a pre-approval submitted for the machine. I proceeded to call the local Marshfield, WI branch of Apria to find out what was going on, and was informed they would not be processing my order, as they quote "Did not make enough money on the order through insurance."! This whole process is now going on 3 weeks and Apria Marshfield basically just told me to go pound sand. Unbelievable! I am sure Apria is a good company, but I would avoid the local Marshfield branch at all costs.

It took many phone calls, speaking to an Apria manager and three days before he finally was able to get it. The provider had to send the information to Apria three times. When he did finally go in to pick it up, nobody knew where his paperwork was and he was given wrong information on payment. None of the staff have a clue about how to do their jobs. When you call in you are treated like you are bothering them. It is mind blowing that any provider would use this company for their patient's medical equipment needs!! Apria needs to be shut down. They are not there for the patient and their attitude is horrible. They really dont deserve the one star that I am required to leave on this review.
