Follow up to my earlier review: an assistant to Mr. Moncure emailed me and my husband out of the blue in June, demanding payment for services. My husband replied to the assistant that we did not owe them for services as due to their incompetence, lack of communication, and rampant mistakes, we had left all of the documents they prepared for us at their office and instead filed our taxes on our own back in April. Mr. Moncure himself then emailed us demanding proof that the taxes we filed were so drastically different from what was prepared (we received a $1000 REFUND filing ourselves, while his firm determined we OWED $400 to the government), and saying that we should still owe the preparation fee for the (inaccurate) work that his firm had done. We called him immediately to explain the situation, at which point he flatly accused us of LYING about being quoted only $200 because his firm "NEVER does preparations for less than $500" and that his firm "did not have an agreement at that low price on record anywhere" in their files. Oh really? We immediately forwarded him a copy of the original signed invoice on the Ross & Moncure letterhead for exactly $200, plus another copy attached to his assistant's follow-up email demanding payment -- on which he was CCed and clearly didn't bother reading. We also offered to send a copy of our return showing the discrepancies between what we filed and their mistake-ridden draft return. He stuttered on the phone, seemed very confused, and then hung up. No "sorry," no explanation. We haven't heard from him since. I would expect the owner of a business to apologize to a customer if they had complained about shoddy work and poor treatment and try to get to the bottom of the misunderstanding. Instead, we were subjected to nasty accusations right off the bat which was outright appalling. What happened to the customer being right? Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. read more

If I could give 4.5, I would so that. I've been a satisfied client for the past 3 years. They've handled personal taxes and payroll for my small business. Our taxes are complicated due to the number of businesses that we own and we've never had an audit or related issue with our taxes. They've always paid employees on time and I've never had complaint from my employees. Initially, they were not as quick in communicating the status of a tax question or issue as I would like. That has recently improved and I am expecting the recent level of of responsive service to be the norm. AVOID AVOID AVOID I would avoid using this company. Last year, they made two errors in the amount of $15,055 and $4196. After some back and forth, they said "Terribly sorry, but your position toward our firm right at the outset of our relationship that we are to blame for these issues despite insufficient understanding on your end tells me that you are not a good long-term client for us. We wish you well, and I respectfully recommend that you make an effort to reach out to the (OFFICE NAME) tax department to better understand their system. That is something that will be required for you annually, no matter which accountant you hire to complete your tax returns." And then, the refused to refund my money and left me to sort out the 19K mistake. When they admitted they didn't know how to process the tax issue and never reached out to clarify. I could never recommend this company in could faith to anyone. read more

Stay as far away as you can from these folks. They don't communicate. They don't file extensions and other documents when they say they do; they farm out work to others, etc. They are toxic. You'd be better off with a 10 year old version of Turbo Tax. read more

My experience with Ross and Moncure over the past several years has been wonderful. My financial situation is made more complicated by hostile trustees who call for affidavits and demand extensions be taken annually. Mr. Moncure takes a genuine interest in and satisfies the needs of my situation. He has a well orchestrated office from Veronika at the front door, to Brian, Mike, Sandra, and Rachel. The analogy of an orchestra could be extended on with these individuals that I have had the pleasure working with. Each has a specialized function, communicates with the others, and the path to results is transparent to me. Any questions, or new/different tax laws that I do not understand and become applicable to me are addressed in a timely manner with a complete explanation of different avenues I can take. This also spills over into the planning stages, which I have found to be very beneficial as they will consult with financial planners as well as attorneys all while keeping their fiduciary responsibility and my best interest in mind. This type of service and expertise comes at a very affordable price, comparable with other professionals nationwide, not just DC area prices. They work hard but since they are so well organized and in quality communication with each other and me, it makes for a well distributed workload for the team. I would definitely recommend them to anyone, even someone who feels they have a good grasp of their taxes. I feel that the changing laws and the fluctuating atmosphere of an individual's earnings are a burden to learn all of the details included in the varying scenarios. I have always done my own taxes, but this year for professional reasons, I wanted to have a professional sign off on them. I provided all of my documents in order and referenced on a spreadsheet, and because I was so organized, they reduced the price they quoted me. I met with one of their accountants to go over my paperwork. Then someone else there, apparently, prepared my taxes, and made a glaring error that resulted in what would have been on overpayment of several thousand dollars. I caught that error, and they redid my taxes. Once I sent in my check to the IRS, the IRS discovered that Ross and Monclure had made another error that I hadn't caught, and I got a bill after tax day for several thousand dollars plus penalty and interest. This nonsense was exactly what I was hoping to avoid by hiring a professional. R&M admitted their mistakes (the accountant I met with wrote "the person who prepared your taxes made a mistake"), at least, and sent me a check for the penalty but not the additional interest I had to pay. They actually asked if I wanted the penalty applied to the fee for next year's tax preparation, as if I would be going back to them. read more
