The Double Decker Diner is one of my favourite hidden gems in the city. While it is located in…read moreBarrhaven (or as you downtowners like to say, "Farrhaven"), this food truck is well worth the trip to the suburbs. Voted Best Chiptruck in 2010 and Ottawa's Best Fries 2011 (Eastern Ont/West Quebec on CTV Ottawa), it's obviously a local favourite. The Double Decker was first stationed just south of the city in Manotick, but recently moved to Barrhaven, perhaps to lure more customers. The British themed bus is hard to miss at Jockvale and Greenbank right beside the On the Green Driving Range. I love their set-up: tons of picnic tables outside and great scenery plus the upstairs of the bus is decked out in a retro diner theme and is always spic and span whenever I stop by. The bus is family owned and operated and the service is always fast and friendly. Their milkshakes are to die for - I'm a huge fan of the chocolate mint. My sister and I frequently stop here for poutine (fresh, squeaky curds and yummy gravy!) but this weekend I sampled one of their "palace corgis" (yes...it's most likely because I had my corgi with me and I thought it was ironic - don't judge!) - a delicious cheese dog. It was awesome. I mean, I know it's just a hot dog with cheese but it really hit the spot. I still think I'd go for the poutine next time, but they also have soft serve and floats which I can only imagine would be awesome in the hot summer months. Go visit the Double Decker - it's by far one of the best chip trucks in Ottawa.

I loved this place when it was in Manotick and would always see line ups of people waiting to order. Their patio area was also busy and full of people sitting to enjoy their food. This was partly the reason why I decided to give it another go. The upper deck of the double decker is interesting and still accessible. It's probably not highly recommended on any days above a warm temperature as I could see it being quite uncomfortable upstairs eating. I ordered the standard poutine and found that they had put way too much gravy. At the beginning it was tolerable however towards the end when the gravy over powered the remaining fries, the poutine became a soup (see my photo). Despite this I'd still probably return and give it another shot. When I do I will update the rating, as applicable, or leave it as it is.

I was seriously craving something greasy so I went with the spare ribs poutine which turned out to be a smart choice. They put plenty of curds which is always something I like in a poutine. The fries themselves were well-seasoned and thick while the meat was very tender. They would have been quite good on their own too. My only complaint was that they garnished it with deep-fried onions that were cold. I think even if they had been hot they wouldn't have added much to the poutine as a whole.

Out of the 3 trucks parked in the area, this one had a huge line of people swarming so naturally that attracted us to it, to discover that everyone was jumping all over this for their grilled cheese. Classic Grilled Cheese - You can't mess up a grilled cheese, and these guys did not. I was just hoping that it had some special cheese/bread/element to it, but overall it's just a straightforward grilled cheese. The tater tots seem to be something special here that everyone wants to get their hands on. Unfortunately they just ran out at around the 1:00pm when we stepped up to order. I'll be left wondering what was so good since everyone had a look of despair once they realized there was none left. FRIED CHEESECAKE - Probably the savior of our meal. Battered and topped with a strawberry jam based sauce. They also offer Mac and Cheese too sold by the pound in small/med/large takeout style containers.

Being the glutton that I am, one of the that things I love about Ottawa is all the food festivals…read more I'm only there once a month, but I've already been to a few in the past year.  When a friend was in town visiting my wife, we were looking for some food while doing a mix of tourist-y stuff and less interesting errands that I was running while in possession of a car. Always on the look out for trying new food trucks as I am, I gave the Street Food App a look, and saw that a couple were located in front of city hall. Knowing that this is where a lot of events occur, I delved a little further and found out that there was a mac and cheese food fest going on. This was going to happen. The mac and cheese fest wasn't to the scale of poutine fest(s) or others that have been held in the same space. Maybe it was because it was just the mid-afternoon, but there was just a handful of slingers of cheese-y decadence, a couple dessert ones, and a lone leomade vendor to sate your thirst. The beergarden was empty, save one couple whose motto was likely "it's five o'clock somewhere" and the band soldiering on despite sound issues and the lack of an audience.  However, when you're there for a simple meal and not to engage in a full out day of pasta gorging, you don't need that much selection. I picked out Smoke n' Steam, a rustic-looking hut on top of a trailer, as they had several types of mac and cheese to choose from, and at a more respectable price point than some of their competitors. Among their options there was chunky bacon, shrimp, hotdog (for the young and young at heart), and what I ended up going with, the Reuben. There wasn't much of a line up, so we quickly had our orders in and then in hand, taking seat in the nearby colourful Muskoka chairs.  The container was generously filled with big hunks of smoked meat, sauerkraut, and pasta in a white cheese sauce that was presumably Swiss, in true Reuben fashion. It was the type of mac and cheese that called out to be mixed altogether, mostly since I'm not enough of a sauerkraut fan to want mouthfuls of just that. Everything came together quite nicely, as the sauerkraut cut through the richness of the cheese and smokey, tender meat, but wasn't too funky. The pasta itself was a tight spiral similar to gemelli, and was a nice al dente, which was pleasant to find, since pasta served at big events like this can often be over cooked from sitting in a heating tray. I got an order of their smoked meat mac and cheese to take home to my studious wife, and look forward to trying Smoke n' Steam's regular menu of smoked meat goodness in the future.

Just for Laughs (French: Juste pour rire) is a comedy festival held each July in Montreal. Founded…read morein 1983, it is the largest international comedy festival in the world. It also serves as a television division. Just for Laughs was formed in 1983 as a two-day French-language event. In 1985, Andy Nulman joined the festival's staff and introduced English-language events as well; under Nulman's stewardship, the festival increased to a full month, with French-speaking performers during the first half, and English speakers in the second half. International and non-verbal acts (acrobats, pantomimes, etc.) are scattered throughout the program. Although Just For Laughs attracts spectators from around the world, many of those in the audience are talent scouts, booking agents, producers, and managers from the entertainment industry. Performing at the festival is one of the biggest opportunities for undiscovered talent to showcase their act in front of industry professionals. In 2022, the festival celebrates its 40th year, so a lot of shows focused on highlights from the past 40 years. Because of the pandemic, the amount of stages and visitors are noticeable less than years before the pandemic, but hope that 2023 will be back to normal !

After our third and final workshop day, I was once again hungry and needed to get some dinner. I walked down a block on Rue de Bleury, looked to my right, and it was the start of the festival. Sweet! My dinner plans changed. I decided to get something close and then wander over to the festival. Rue Saint-Catherine Ouest was blocked off for the festival. Frankly, more of it was blocked off due to construction. It was a treat to just walk it without any traffic. I had never done that before. I got to take photos of the Just For Laughs mascot, watch and listen to a live comedy podcast in French, and check out various vendors and acts along the way. I looked at the bill and Trevor Noah was in town the following weekend. I wish that my workshop had been delayed by a week! On the main stage, by Place des Arts, was Pierre-Olivier Cyr, a hypnotist. He was great getting the crowd to actively participate. He eventually had a bunch of participants go on stage and get hypnotized. He then made them act in movie parts. He first had them as prehistoric animals in Jurassic Park. He then got them to dance like the cast did in Grease. It was hilarious and amazing! I had the best time. Although there were a ton of food and drink trucks, I didn't get anything. I was still full from dinner, but did hit the Starbucks close by for a drink before I called it an evening. There were street performers everywhere. I took in these dancing slinkies. One guy next to me attempted to take the coil off one of them, but failed. Instead, the coil decided to snuggle up to him. It freaked the woman in front of me that she ended up snuggling up to me for a brief moment until I stared at her funny. I had so much fun. It was such an unexpected event that I had felt like I had crashed. I'm so glad that I hit this festival. I loved it and hope to return soon to take it in again. (324)
