so after reading a friends review of this food truck (bus) and hearing about the citizens award for best fries - we decided to take a drive and try this for ourselves.......nice area to sit and have dinner, picnic tables on a nice neatly trimmed lawn at the driving range in barhaven. we ordered two burgers, a chocolate and banana milkshake, and a water and split a french fry. the meat in the burgers was nice and cooked properly - the bun had too much bread though and too filling, the fries had a nice colour but honestly they weren't that hot, and weren't that crispy. they had been precooked and just seemed like they didn't fry them off enough.......probably worried that they would overcook them - either way not great. the shake was awesome, i don't like a really think shake and it had tons of banana flavor - tasty shake. So for me, if i lived there i would go, but from ottawa, i would do hintonburger, the butchery, baja burger.....and our new favourite BITE THIS.

Pretty cool place!

So my husband and I were going to be in Bells Corners running some errands, so I suggested we grab some lunch at Ad Mare. Ad Mare is a food truck that I heard great things about. Once upon a time it was parked in Downtown Ottawa, but since the Covid-19 Pandemic started, it's now parked at the Kichesippi Brewery. There are picnic tables outside, and I believe you can bring their food into the brewery to eat inside if you are drinking at the brewery. We opted to eat in our car (which, for the record, I did long before the Pandemic. Come to think of it, eating in my car, washing my hands ALL THE TIME, not liking it when strangers get too close to me, I was like that before the Pandemic. I never wore a mask though, but truth be told, I see a lot of advantages to mask-wearing, apart from the prevention of respiratory infections, like it shields more of my face from UV radiation #youthfulskinforever, and makes me less recognizable #lovebeingincognito, lol. I am totally digressing here, apologies). Ok, back to the food. I love that it was in a cardboard container (I hate styrofoam) lined with waxed paper. The fries were good chip wagon fries. The coleslaw was oil and vinegar based, which I much prefer over the mayonnaise based ones. It had a significant amount of pepper in it, which I liked, but it made it spicer than I anticipated. We got the 2 piece platter ($13.50) to share and it was more than enough food. The pieces of fish were a good size and like I said at the start of the review, they were delicious. We got tartar sauce and ketchup (not enough ketchup for my liking, but I'm a ketchup fiend with my fries, haha). I waited in the car while my husband bought the food, so can't comment on customer service, but the wait wasn't too long. There's free parking in the brewery parking lot, but not too much of it. We had no problems finding a spot on our rainy autumn visit, but I can imagine on a nice summer day, there may be parking struggles.

A 3 piece could feed a small family for $25. Beware that taxes are extra. The location is right on the brewery patio (beer sold inside) and they will bring it to your table inside or outside. Parking is difficult but the building has always had this problem, being sandwiched between a railroad and a small ravine!

We had fun hanging out with the guys in the truck--they're super friendly and just enjoying life. They worked really hard to take everyone's order quickly and to get the food out--so even though there was a wee bit of a wait, they were hustling to get the food out, so I didn't mind the little extra bit of time. I had the jerk chicken roti with plantains on the side and it was delish! Just the right level of spice for me and the roti was so yummy--I could eat that roti everyday and not get tired of it. I really enjoyed the plantains as well, apparently they're meant as a way to cool down a dish which I did not know, thank you co-workers for sharing your Caribbean food knowledge. I also had a taste of a co-workers curry goat, which I'd not had goat before. I was pleasantly surprised at how tender and flavourful it was. While waiting for the food, a Canada Post courier stopped by to deliver a letter and it was just the weirdest thing--have you ever seen a food truck get mail? The courier thought it was pretty cool--it was a new experience for him, and just a little extra something to make the experience unique. This place was a lovely respite from the cubicle life and definitely brought me a little of that Caribbean sunshine to brighten my day.

Full disclosure: I have never bought anything here, I have just eaten my friend's fries, lol. Well, I'll admit it, the fries are good. They are greasy chip wagon fries. Chip wagon fries remind me of my childhood. When I was a kid, my parents and I would go to visit family friends almost every weekend. They had a daughter a few years older than me, and while my parents didn't let me venture out on my own, they entrusted me with their friends' daughter, and she would take me to this chip wagon in front of Nathan Phillips Square (in Toronto) and we would get fries. It was good times. And you know what? Eating fries at TV's Fries with my friend, also good times, lol. Fries + Friends = Good Times :) The fries are crispy on the outside, but soft and creamy on the inside. They are never mealy. They are, however, really really greasy. Ok for an occasional treat, but not frequently. Service is friendly. They only take cash. They are closed on Wednesdays. They are permanently at the Rona parking lot at West Hunt Club and Merivale (close to the Dollarama). Note that there is another chip wagon nearby in the Canadian Tire parking lot called Crispy Chips. They are different chip wagons, and likely rivals/competitors. I have never been to Crispy Chips because my friend always wants to go to TV's Fries, lol.
